Cyprus Geography
Cyprus geography combines the location of the island with its topography, climate, natural resources and land use. Located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, the island of Cyprus lies at a distance of 97 kilometers from Syria and 64 kilometers from Turkey. The entire island covers an area of approximately 9,250 square kilometers and has a coastline of about 648 kilometers.
The geography of Cyprus underlines the terrain and the climate of Cyprus. The island consists of two mountain ranges that cut the island from east to west. Between these two parallel mountain ranges lie the Central plain that constitutes the agricultural tract of Cyprus. Climate of Cyprus, another principal aspect of Cyprian geography, is temperate and Mediterranean type characterized with hot and dry summers and cool and wet winters.
The Cyprus geography also includes its natural resources. These are asbestos, copper, gypsum, marble, timber, pyrites etc. 40% of the land in Cyprus is cultivable. Meadows and pastures amount to 10% and irrigated land in Cyprus is 350 square kilometers. The island is subjected to a modern amount of earthquakes and there are no catchment areas.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia. In the Eastern Basin of the Mediterranean, it is located south of the Anatolian peninsula (Asia Minor), or modern-day Turkey, of the Asian (or Eurasian) mainland; thus, it is generally included in Western Asia, or the Middle East, geographically.
Topographic map of Cyprus Enlarge See satellite photos of Cyprus: photo 1 photo 2 photo 3 photo 4 The physical setting for life on the island is dominated by the mountain masses and the central plain they encompass, the Mesaoria. The Troodos Mountains cover most of the southern and western portions of the island and account for roughly half its area. The narrow Kyrenia Range, extending along the northern coastline, occupies substantially less area, and elevations are lower. The two mountain systems run generally parallel to the Taurus Mountains on the Turkish mainland, whose silhouette is visible from northern Cyprus. Coastal lowlands, varying in width, surround the island. While the Troodos Mountains are a massif formed of molten igneous rock, the Kyrenia Range is a narrow limestone ridge that rises suddenly from the plains. Its easternmost extension becomes a series of foothills on the Karpass Peninsula. That peninsula points toward Asia Minor, to which Cyprus belongs geologically.

North Cyprus Geography Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean after Sardinia and Sicily. It lies 65 km from Turkey’s southern coast and other neighboring countries include Egypt (370 km), Israel and Greece making it an ideal location. Since the division of Cyprus in 1974 the Turkish Cypriots have lived in the northern part of the island while Greek Cypriots live in the south. North Cyprus is some 100 miles long , 40 miles across at its widest point and has a total area of 1357 sq. miles or nearly one third of the whole of the Cyprus Island. Mainly the effects of side pressures have formed the island’s present shape during different geological ages. ‘Capes’ have been formed where the land has strength against the erosion of the sea and ‘Gulfs’ have been formed where the land was weaker and so gave way to erosion. There are two capes, Zafer Cape at the end of the Karpaz Peninsula and Korucam Cape to the west. The two gulfs are at Guzelyurt and Famagusta. North Cyprus comprises nearly one third of the whole island with a total area of 3,515 sq km. It is about 242 km wide and 64 km deep. The total area of Cyprus is approximately 9,252 sq km.

There are two large mountain ranges on the island: the mainly limestone Kyrenian Range in North Cyprus and the volcanic-formed Troodos Mesaoria Plains separate the two. The Akamas peninisula on the west is interesting and unspoilt. The Cyprus south coasts support the bulk of tourism, with several well developed resort towns along the pleasant south coast. Beaches and lovely bays are plentiful, while the west is more rural and rugged.
