When the first British High Commissioner , Sir Garnet Wolseley , arrived in Cyprus in 1878, he was keen to construct a railway on the island but the project did not come to fruition for a long time, due to the uncertainty of the length of the British mandate in Cyprus. In July 1903, Frederick Shelford - on behalf of the Crown Agents - submitted a feasibility study for the construction of a railway line that would originate at Famagusta and terminate at Karavostasi via Nicosia and Morphou , at a total cost of £141,526.

    Cyprus : Government
PRINCIPAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS Chief of State: President Dimitris Christofias Head of Government: President Dimitris Christofias Since 1974, Cyprus has been divided de facto into the government-controlled two-thirds of the island and the Turkish Cypriot-administered one-third. The Government of the Republic of Cyprus has continued to be the only internationally recognized authority; in practice, its authority extends only to the government-controlled area. The 1960 Cypriot constitution provided for a presidential system of government with independent executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as a complex system of checks and balances, including a weighted power-sharing ratio designed to protect the interests of the Turkish Cypriots. The executive, for example, was headed by a Greek Cypriot president and a Turkish Cypriot vice president, elected by their respective communities for 5-year terms, and each possessing a right of veto over certain types of legislation and executive decisions. The Greek Cypriot-controlled Republic of Cyprus retains most elements of the presidential system of government expressed in the constitution, although it has cited the Turkish Cypriots' "withdrawal from government" and the "law of necessity" to enact structural changes that allow "effective governance."

    Cyprus Government :
Cyprus has a rich, but turbulent history that can be traced to over 8000 years back. Keeping in line with the other Mediterranean islands, Cyprus too has been under numerous different occupations. The most important of the occupants of Cyprus were the Athenians, the Persians, Alexander the Great, the Egyptians and the Romans. It was after the partition of the Roman Empire in the 4th century that Cyprus became a part of the Eastern Byzantine Empire. Cyprus was temporarily under the Arabs between the years 648 and 746 wherein Richard I of England installed Guy of Lusiganan as its ruler during the Third Crusade. Venice then took control in 1489, which lasted only till 1571 when the Ottoman Turks maintained rule in Cyprus for over three centuries. The British then empowered Cyprus in 1878, wherein Cyprus finally achieved independence in August 1960, after a four year struggle with the troops from the UK.
