North Cyprus History
The Island of Cyprus has a long and varied history, ever since the first settlers came to the island in around 8500B.C. The abundance of copper and timber on the island, combined with its position in the middle of the major trading routes made Cyprus irresistible to a whole range of foreign powers, including the Phoenicians, Assyrians, Persians, Egyptians, Greeks and Ottomans. In Bronze Age (2500-1050BC) copper was more extensively exploited bringing wealth to Cyprus. Trade developed with the Near East, Egypt and the Aegean, where Cyprus was known as Alasia. During the 12th and 11th centuries mass waves of Achaean Greeks came to settle on the Cyprus Island spreading the Greek language, religion and customs. They gradually took control over Cyprus and establish the first city-kingdoms of Paphos, Salamis, Kition and Kourion. During Hellenistic Period (325-58 BC) after the rivalries between Alexander's generals, Cyprus eventually came under the Hellenistic state of the Ptolemies of Egypt, and from then onwards belonged to the Greek Alexandrine world. The Ptolemies abolished the city-kingdoms and unified Cyprus with Paphos as the capital city.

Cyprus History :
More than 7000 years ago the first men landed on the shores of Cyprus. The first Greeks came to the Island of Cyprus in 1400 BC. The Greek civilization on the island did not go unchallenged. Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians all attacked the island between 725 BC and 333 BC. Then in 333 BC Alexander the Great seized control of Cyprus. Cyprus remained under Greek control until the Island fell to the invading Roman forces. When Rome eventually lost its control over vast stretches of the known civilization, then Cyprus came under the rule of Byzantium. The people of Cyprus then considered Constantinople to be their capital. Byzantium retained control of Cyprus until the time of the Crusades. In 1091 Richard the Lionhearted invaded and conquered the Island of Cyprus. That change brought the feudal system of government to Cyprus. That system remained the governing force until 1489 AD.

CYPRUS HISTORY
During the 12th and 11th centuries B.C. Achaean Greeks come to settle on the island bringing with them the Greek language, their religion, their customs. They build new cities like Paphos, Salamis, Kition. The 8th century B.C. is a period of great prosperity but the island falls prey to several conquerors. Cypriot Kingdoms try to preserve their independence but come under the domination of Assyria and then Egypt and Persia. King Evagoras of Salamis (who ruled from 411-374 BC) rebels against Persia and unifies the island but, after a great siege has to conclude peace with Persia and loses control of the whole island. In 333 BC Alexander the Great defeats Persia and Cyprus becomes part of his empire. After Alexander's death Cyprus comes under the Hellenistic state of the Ptolemies of Egypt, and belongs from now onwards to the Greek Alexandrine world. The capital is now Paphos. This is a period of wealth for Cyprus. In 358 BC Cyprus becomes part of the Roman Empire. During the missionary journeys by Saints Paul and Barnabas, Cyprus becomes the first country to be governed by Christian. Destructive earthquakes occur during the 1st century B.C. and the 1at A.D. and cities are rebuilt. After the division of the Roman Empire in two parts 330 A.D., Cyprus comes under the Hellenic empire of Byzantium known as Eastern Roman Empire, with Constantinople as its capital. Constantine the Great's mother, Helena is said to have stopped in Cyprus on her journey from the Holy Land, with remnants of the Holy Cross and founded the monastery of Stavrovouni. More earthquakes during the 4th century A.D. completely destroy the main cities. Cities lose their splendor and remain in ruins. New cities arise, Constantia is now the capital, and large basilicas are built as from the 4-5th century A.D. In 647 Arabs invade the island. In 688 Emperor Justinian II and Caliph al-Malik sign a treaty neutralizing Cyprus, but violations are reported, and the island is also attacked by pirates until 965 when Emperor Nicephoros Phocas expels Arabs from Asia Minor and Cyprus.

HISTORY
Cyprus Table of Contents Christianity was introduced early in the Christian Era, when Cyprus was under Roman rule, by the apostles Paul, Mark, and Barnabas. The martyrdom of Barnabas and the later discovery of his tomb are particularly important events in the history of the Church of Cyprus and were instrumental in its becoming autocephalous rather than remaining subordinate to the patriarchate of Antioch. After doctrinal controversies split Christianity between East and West, the church survived 400 years of attempts by Roman Catholic rulers to force recognition of the authority of the pope in Rome. After Cyprus's conquest by Ottoman Turks in the sixteenth century, the sees of the Orthodox bishops were reestablished, according to the Ottoman practice of governing through a millet (a community distinguished by religion) system. Provided a millet met the empire's demands, its leaders enjoyed a degree of autonomy. The head of the Greek Cypriot millet , the archbishop, was therefore both a religious and a secular leader, and it was entirely consistent with historical tradition that, in the anticolonial struggle of the mid-1950s, Archbishop Makarios III emerged as the leader of the Greek Cypriots and was subsequently elected president of the new republic.

Cyprus History in Brief
Cyprus has had many names but most of scientists agree that the present name comes from the word "copper". An alternative theory supposes that 'Cyprus' comes from the Greek work 'kypros' which means "henna". Strategic location of the island between East and West resulted in repeated invasions of foreign nations and civilizations that have brought changes to the life and culture of the island's inhabitants. In Cyprus history the island was colonised by Phoenicians, Achaeans, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, and Greeks in different periods. Cyprus History
Cypriot culture is among the oldest in the Mediterranean. Cyprus gained its independence from the United Kingdom and established a constitutional republic in 1960, after an anti-British campaign by the Greek Cypriot EOKA (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters), a guerrilla group that desired political union, or enosis, with Greece. Archbishop Makarios, a charismatic religious and political leader, was elected president. Shortly after the founding of the republic, serious differences arose between the two communities about the implementation and interpretation of the constitution. The Greek Cypriots argued that the complex mechanisms introduced to protect Turkish Cypriot interests were obstacles to efficient government. In November 1963, President Makarios advanced a series of constitutional amendments designed to eliminate some of these special provisions. The Turkish Cypriots opposed such changes. The confrontation prompted widespread intercommunal fighting in December 1963, after which Turkish Cypriots ceased to participate in the government. Following the outbreak of intercommunal violence, many Turkish Cypriots (and some Greek Cypriots) living in mixed villages began to move into enclaved villages or elsewhere. UN peacekeepers were deployed on the island in 1964. Following another outbreak of intercommunal violence in 1967-68, a Turkish Cypriot provisional administration was formed.

Cyprus History
Though small, the country of Cyprus has a long history that underlines a civilization of 9000 years. Cyprus history dates back to as early as 7000 B.C when the northern and the southern coasts of the country was inhabited by people of the Neolithic age. The years following 1400 B.C witnessed the coming of the Greeks into the land.
Cyprus history was marked with a number of invasions by Egypt, Assyria, Persia and also by Alexander the Great. But the country remained in the hand of the Greeks till 58 B.C after which it came under the control of the Roman empire. The history of Cyprus took a turn again in 1489 when it was conquered by the Venetians. In 1571 Cyprus was colonized by the Ottoman empire and Islam was brought in the country.
The island then became a part of British administration. Achievement of independence in1960 was a golden moment in Cyprian history. But the island was invaded by the Turks in 1974. Thus the Cyprus history has come a long way and its various faces are intersecting as well as fascinating.

http://www.greece.org/themis/cyprus/petition/cyphistory.htm
The Greek settlement of Cyprus began during the Iron Age in the 2nd millennium BC with the establishment of city-states by the Mycenaeans and Achaeans. Greek culture established itself on the island and was able to withstand the vicissitudes of subsequent foreign domination by the Assyrians (8th-6th centuries BC), the Egyptians (560-540 BC) and the Persians (540-332 BC). Alexander the Great put an end to Persian rule of the island in 330 BC. Cyprus was ruled by Alexander’s Ptolemy descendant dynasty from 323 to 30 BC and then became a province of the Roman Empire from 30 BC to 330 AD. Cyprus was converted to Christianity by Saints Paul and Barnabas around 45 AD. Cyprus was also a province of the Greek speaking Byzantine Empire. The Ottoman Empire captured Cyprus from the Venetians in 1571. The Hellenic awareness of the people of Cyprus can be attested to by their identification with and support for the Greek War of Independence during which the Archbishop of Cyprus was executed for supporting Hellenic independence. In 1878, the Ottoman Empire ceded Cyprus to Great Britain so that Russian ambitions in the Mediterranean could be checked. During World War one, Cyprus was formally annexed by Great Britain as a result of the Ottoman Empire's decision to become an ally of Germany. In 1923, British rule over Cyprus was formalized by the Treaty of Lausanne while Turkey formally renounced all claims to Cyprus.

Cyprus : History
The Republic of Cyprus was accomplished in 1960, after the former colony gained freedom from Britain. Since 1974, a de facto division of the island has existed, with the Greek Cypriot community controlling 63 % of the territory, and the Turkish Cypriots, backed by Turkish army units, 37 %. The scene of constant anticolonial and intercommunal strife since the mid-1950s, Cyprus assumed an importance out of proportion to its size and population because of its strategic location and its impact on the national interests of other nations. The island's location in the eastern Mediterranean Sea has made it easily accessible from Europe, Asia, and Africa since the earliest days of ships. Its timber and mineral resources made it valuable as a source of trade goods in the ancient world, but attracted conquerors, pirates, and adventurers in addition to merchants and settlers. Turkish forces seized 37 % of the island and effected a de facto partition that was still in existence at the beginning of the 1990s. Turkish Cypriots declared the establishment of their own state in 1983, but as of 1990 only Turkey had recognized the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus." Although more populous and considerably precious, and enjoying international recognition, the Republic of Cyprus had not been able to regain its lost territory. Increased military expenditures could not offset the considerable Turkish military presence on the island. Years of laborious negotiations at numerous venues had also achieved little toward ending the island's tragic division.
