Cyprus History Copper, the metal, is named after Cyprus. This came about because the Romans called copper aes Cyprium or, the metal of Cyprus. This was later on shortened to cyprium and then it got converted to cuprum.
The history of Cyprus is violent but that is due to the fact that since it holds a very strategic position in the East Mediterranean region it was always subject to frequent invasions but nearly every major empire that passed through the Mediterranean. For example, the following empires have had Cyprus in their grip through a long history: Greeks, Assyrians, Persians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Byzantines, and Romans. Cyprus was also ruled by Richard the Lion-Heart, leader of the Third Crusade, from 1191-1192. One year later, Richard sold Cyprus to the Knights Templar. The Knights in turn sold it to Guy de Lusignan (the deposed King of Jerusalem). Following this, the island of Cyprus was ruled by the Lusignan family until the late 15th century, before it fell victim to another invasion and annexation. This time by the Venetians. A century later, from the 16th century to the 19th century, it was ruled by the Turks. After stumbling through this long history Cyprus finally became a British colony. This came about after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, following which Cyprus was yet again annexed, by the British in 1925. From 1955 to 1959, the Greek Cypriots were led by George Grivas in an effort to unite the island with Greece. However, this move did not succeed and the result was the formation of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.

Cyprus History
Cyprus has witnessed the long history with incessant political turmoil ruled and conquered by different people and finally got disintegrated with Greece. Till 8th Century B.C the country basked in the glory and prosperity. But when Cyprus fell into the hands of the conquerors the scenario changed. First the Assyria then Egypt and Persia and later the Roman Empire established their power. The story did not end here; the Roman established their supremacy here and then the Arabs. Later in 1571 Cyprus fell into the hands of Turks who established their colonies here. During World War I British annexed the Island making their crown colony. The National Organization of Cypriot Combatants launched unrest against the British rule in the form of Guerilla warfare. The Greek Cypriot Nationalist Leader Archbishop Makarios instead of uniting with Greece demanded independent Cyprus whereas the Turkish Cypriots were strongly supporting the idea of partition of the island between Turkish and Greek population. The island got its independence on August 16 1960 but neither it neither went through partition nor got united with Greece. But the situation worsened further with political turmoil that led to the partition with different Greek and Turkish territories. This only became possible with the intervention of UN Security Council. Even after long period the tussle continues and the UN is still trying for the reunification and the efforts have turned futile.

The island of Aphrodite
Cyprus featured in ancient mythology as the island of Aphrodite. The celebrated Rock of Aphrodite, the Petra tou Romiou, between Paphos and Limassol marks the spot where the goddess of love and fertility;i foam-born (aphros = "foam"), is supposed to have risen out of the sea. The name Petra tou Romiou literally means "Rock ofthe Roman" (the Byzantines, inheritors of the Eastern Roman Empire, referred to them selves as Romaioi, which came simply to mean Greeks). Archaeological finds at Kouklia, near Paphos, show that this was the site of one of the largest shrines of Aphrodite in antiquity.
Hesiod's account of the birth of Aphrodite
The poet Hesiod gives an account in his "Theogony" (155-200) ofthe birth of Aphrodite off the coast of Cyprus. He tells us that Aphrodite was the daughter of Gaia (the Earth) and Uranos (the Sky), the primal Greek deities who emerged from Chaos (the Void). They had numerous children, the Cyclopes, the Hecatoncheires ("Hundred-Armed") and the Titans. Uranos exiled the Hecatoncheires and the Cyclopes to Tartaros (the Underworld). whereupon Gaia, angered, urged their son Kronos, one of the Titans, to take revenge on his father. Kronos hid in his parents' bedroom, cut off Uranos's testicles with a sickle and threw them into the sea. They were carried by currents to Cyprus, where Aphrodite then rose from the foam. In Hesiod's words: "And even as he cut off the privy parts with the sickle and hurled them from the mainland into the foaming sea, even so were they borne over the sea for a long time, and from the immortal flesh a white foam arose round it, and therein a maiden grew. And first she came nigh unto holy Kythera, whence next she came to sea-girt Kypros. And she came forth as a fair goddess to be revered by men, and around her the grass grew· under her tender feet. Her do gods and men call Aphrodite." (After the translation by A. W. Mair)

About Cyprus
Cyprus has been constantly a significant trading post between Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and throughout history someone has always wanted to take it from someone else. First the Mycenaeans grabbed it, then the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Assyrians and Persians. Alexander the Greattook it off them, then Ptolemy snatched it from him. Rome took over in 58 BC and kept the place in relative peace and security until the 7th century, when the Byzantine and Islamic empires started three centuries of bickering over it. In 1191, Richard the Lionheart, on his way to the Crusades, dropped into Cyprus for a spot of conquering, but the Cypriots caused him too much trouble (one of them killed his hawk and he was forced to massacre a few villages in retaliation),so he sold them to the Knights Templar. The Templars sold the island to Guy de Lusignan, whose heirs hung in for three centuries, repressing the culture and orthodox religion but doing wonders for the economy. The Venetians took over in 1489, but were booted out by the expanding Ottoman Empire in 1571, which kept Cyprus for 300 years before handing it over to Britain.

    Cyprus history
Due to ethnic tension, the island was invaded by Turkey in 1974 who occupied the northern part of the island. Presently, the island is divided into four main parts namely:
  • The administrative area under the Republic of Cyprus . The administrative area under the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . The British Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotri and Dhekelia, acquired by the British under the Treaty of Establishment of the Republic.
  • In addition, Greek Cypriot has three de-jure exclaves. They are the villages of Xylotymvou, Ormidhia, and the Dhekelia Power Station. All these exclaves lie within the British Sovereign Base Area of Dhekelia. Although Cyprus was admitted into the EU in 2004, only the Greek controlled region is recognised internationally. The island has a rich ancient history dating back as far as 10,000 BC. Archeological remains from the Neolithic era have been found at Shillourokambos, Khirokita, and Kastros confirming the existence of these early settlers in Cyprus . By 1600 BC, the Mycenaean Greeks began settling in Cyprus . The second wave of Greek settlement took place 500 years later around 1100 BC. Because of its strategic location, Cyprus had been ruled in succession by the Assyrians, the Egyptians, and the Persians since 709 BC. After the Persians, the island was brought under the rule of Alexander the Great. For a short spell, the island achieved a measure of political stability which lasted until Alexander's death.
