The Czech Republic was the western part of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. Formed into a common state after World War I (October 28, 1918), the Czechs, Moravians, and Slovaks remained united for almost 75 years. On January 1, 1993, the two republics split to form two separate states. The Czechs lost their national independence to the Hapsburgs Empire in 1620 at the Battle of White Mountain and for the next 300 years were ruled by the Austrian Monarchy. With the collapse of the monarchy at the end of World War I, the independent country of Czechoslovakia was formed, encouraged by, among others, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. Despite cultural differences, the Slovaks shared with the Czechs similar aspirations for independence from the Hapsburg state and voluntarily united with the Czechs. For historical reasons, Slovaks were not at the same level of economic and technological development as the Czechs, but the freedom and opportunity found in Czechoslovakia enabled them to make strides toward overcoming these inequalities. However, the gap never was fully bridged, and the discrepancy played a continuing role throughout the 75 years of the union. Although Czechoslovakia was the only east European country to remain a parliamentary democracy from 1918 to 1938, it was plagued with minority problems, the most important of which concerned the country's large German population. Constituting more than 22% of the interwar state's population and largely concentrated in the Bohemian and Moravian border regions (the Sudetenland), members of this minority, including some who were sympathetic to Nazi Germany, undermined the new Czechoslovak state. Internal and external pressures culminated in September 1938, when France and the United Kingdom yielded to Nazi pressures at Munich and agreed to force Czechoslovakia to cede the Sudetenland to Germany.

Previously, Moravia and Bohemia was under Austrian rule, while Slovakia came under the aegis of Hungary during World War II, Bohemia and Moravia became a German protectorate. After the war, Czechoslovakia was established under the supervision of the occupying Red Army.
By 1948 the Communists had become the dominant political force and took effective control, following elections that year. Soviet-style political and economic systems were put in place and Czechoslovakia became a Soviet ally, joining the

Beginning in the sixteenth century, Bohemia (which incorporates the modern-day Czech Republic) became increasingly controlled by the Habsburgs. After the fall of the Holy Roman Empire, Bohemia became part of Austrian Empire and later of Austria-Hungary.
It was as a consequence of the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire after WW1 in 1918 that the Republic of Czechoslovakia was created. This newly established nation was the sum of the regions previously known as Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia and Carpathian Ruthenia, although it also included significant German, Hungarian, Polish and Ruthenian speaking minority communities. The new Czechoslavkian state granted significant rights to its minority populations, however notable was that these rights did not grant them any territorial political autonomy. This perceived lack of political freedom bred discontent and created a movement amongst the minorities which looked to break away from Czechoslovakia.
It was this discontent which was exploited by Adolf Hitler when, supported by Konrad Henlein's Sudeten German National Socialist Party, as part of the Munich Agreement he gained control of the largely German speaking Sudetenland. Subsequently Poland took up occupation of Polish inhabited areas around Ceský Tešín and, as part of the first Vienna aware in 1938, Hungary gained parts of Slovakia and Subcarpathian Rus, later to be renamed "Czecho-Slovakia".

    Czech Republic : History
Czechoslovakia was accomplished in 1918 as a national state of the Czechs and Slovaks. Although these two peoples were closely related, they had undergone different historical experiences. In the ninth century A.D., the ancestors of the Czechs and Slovaks were united in the Great Moravian Empire, but by the tenth century the Hungarians had conquered Slovakia, and for a millennium the Czechs and the Slovaks went their separate ways. The history of Czechoslovakia, therefore, is a story of two separate peoples whose fates sometimes have touched and sometimes have intertwined. Czechoslovakia's democratic tradition had been suppressed but not destroyed. In 1968 the fight for democracy reemerged within the party itself. While remaining loyal to the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, the leadership of the party under Alexander Dubcek attempted to introduce within Czechoslovakia a more democratic form of socialism. The ensuing Prague Spring of 1968 was crushed by the Warsaw Pact invasion. consequently, the leadership of the party was purged, and Gustav Husak, the new general secretary (the title changed from first secretary in 1971), introduced a "normalization" program. contempt Czech and Slovak dissent, as of 1987 Husak continued to enforce an antireformist course. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Now a member of NATO, the Czech Republic has moved toward integration in world markets, a development that poses both opportunities and risks. Expert Czech Republic History Vacation Planners

In response to Slovakia's demands for greater autonomy, Czechoslovakia was on Jan. 1, 1969, declared a federation. The constituent Czech and Slovak republics received autonomy over local affairs, with the federal government responsible for foreign relations, defense, and finance. The Communist regime collapsed in 1989, and in 1990 economic reforms were begun that were especially disruptive in Slovakia, which had a disproportionate share of subsidized state-owned heavy industry. A strong secessionist movement in Slovakia led to a declaration in 1992 that the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic would separate into independent states. In response to the imminent breakup of Czechoslovakia, a new Czech constitution was written. It was implemented with the birth of the new Czech Republic on Jan. 1, 1993. Havel Klaus . The government moved quickly to privatize state-owned businesses, and mutual funds became a popular investment vehicle for a public unused to dealing with a stock market. The Czech Republic actively sought membership in Western institutions and alliances. In 1994 it became an associate member of the
