These are also called " dance crazes ". Dancing style fads have for some centuries been a part of social dancing, sometimes gliding smoothly into tradition after their "newness" has faded, and sometimes simply fading away into oblivion. Since the Renaissance , the courts of European monarchs and nobles played host to a long succession of dance fads, many of which became social 'crazes' that spread into general society. They include the minuet , the allemande , the schottische , the mazurka and the waltz . Many of these European Renaissance dance crazes—such as the allemande—have long since faded into obscurity, but their rhythms were preserved in European classical music. By the time of

Every time period has the things that people went crazy for, and the 1920s is no different. Everything from board games to Harry Houdini, slang to psychology was in the race for popularity in the eyes of the public. One import from China took the country by storm: mah-jongg. As the game began to outsell even the radio, American entrepaneurs tried to take advantage of the situation by selling bones to manufacturing companies to make pieces, creating guide-books, and Chinese-Americans often received money from people so they could teach them the ins and outs of the game. The 20s was a period of vocal fads with everything from new styles of music, like jazz, to slang reaching the ears of Americans. The work of Freud became popular as well, although the majority of his phillosophies that reached the general public were by that time distorted. Personality typing, the analysis of ones personality by measuring their response to 40 questions, became really popular. Many critics, as well as Freud himself, thought that the attention that his principles recieved was actually a liability. His sexual theories in particular earned him scorn from a large group of people. Dance Crazes were all the rage in the 20s. Some of the more notable ones were the Charleston, the Shimmy, and the Black Bottom. Dance marathons, as well as feats of endurance in general, were popular. One of the strangest of this group was flagpole sitting, where a person sat on top of a flagpole and tried to remain there for as long as they could. The longest sitting of the 20s was done by Alvin Kelly, the creator of the fad. He sat on top of a pole for 49 days straight.

    Breakdancing
From 1980 to 1984 breakdancing, which by then had gone mainstream was everywhere from movies including Breakin' (also known as Breakdance The Movie), Breakin' 2: Electric Bugaloo and Krush Groove in addition to many others and were featured in music videos and television programs which showcased B-Boys' and B-Girls' immense talent along with songs such as Irene Cara's smash hit "Breakdance." It became so popular that there were even instructional videotapes (new DVD's as well as VHS tapes continue to be a big seller) on how to learn to breakdance. The number of injuries resulting from people spinning on their joints is not known but I have a feeling they accounted for a great deal of hospital and emergency room visits. Wouldn't the world be a much better and safer place if people who become physical when angered could instead just battle others with breakdancing moves? Speaking of Which: How many people recall when Alfonzo Ribeiro had his own breakdancing videos available for people to buy and learn all the latest moves? You're really an avid '80s fan if you remember when he dressed up as a younger version of Michael Jackson and danced with the singer in the famous Pepsi commercial in 1984 during which the Gloved One's hair caught on fire while filming.

T
he 1940's were dominated by World War II. European artists and intellectuals fled to the United States from Hitler and the Holocaust, bringing new ideas created in disillusionment. War production pulled us out of the Great Depression. Women were needed to replace men who had gone off to war, and so the first great exodus of women from the home to the workplace began. Rationing affected the food we ate, the clothes we wore, the toys with which children played. A fter the war, the men returned, having seen the rest of the world. No longer was the family farm an ideal; no longer would blacks accept lesser status. The GI Bill allowed more men than ever before to get a college education. Women had to give up their jobs to the returning men, but they had tasted independence.

1980's Dance Steps
By Angela Stefano eHow Contributor updated: August 7, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? The 1980s saw the start of some dance fads that have stood the test of time and remain popular today. Breakdancing and "slam dancing"-also known as mosh pits-started during the decade. There are other dance steps you can learn as well, such as the Robot and the Worm.
The Robot
  • The Robot is one of the easiest dances to do, and, with some practice, you can get good at it. The dance is fairly self-explanatory-the dancer simply moves their arms, legs and torso in a jerking motion as a robot would. Make small motions instead of big, sweeping ones.
  • The Worm
  • Also known as the Centipede, this step is popular for breakdancers to perform. The move begins with the dancer lying on his stomach with his elbows bent and hands flat on the floor. To make the worm-like movements, straighten your arms and push your upper body up. Bend your elbows again and bring your upper body back down to the floor, and, as you do so, kick your legs up. As your legs are coming back down, begin the moves again so your body is going through a rippling movement. If you think you look like a worm-or as much like one as a human can-you've got the dance down.
