28. TEATRO ARCIMBOLDO - English
Renaissance and baroque dance-theater ensemble based in Switzerland. Information about performances, classes and recordings.
http://www.arcimboldo.ch/teatro-english/
TEATRO ARCIMBOLDO, Basle (until 2003 "IL TEATRO AMOROSO") is a music- and dance-theater ensemble. The ensemble was founded in 1996 by Thilo Hirsch. Through the combination of the various elements music, dance, spectacle, historical costumes, scenery and lightning the magic of the Golden Age is brought to life again. The success of this concept can be seen in the many performances since 1996, and in the enthusiastic reviews. The Basler Zeitung, for example, wrote about the production "Liebes Lust und Saitensprünge" ("Amorous Delight and Viol Tricks"), which was also filmed in 1999 by Bavarian Television at the Ekhof Festival (Gotha): "A dazzling piece of pure theater that, under the direction of Thilo Hirsch, was literally chock-full of scintillating dance, pantomime, and vocal treasures." TEATRO ARCIMBOLDO’s most recent project, "Don Quixote," was also very successful. Most of the twenty-six performances given until now in Switzerland and Germany (including at the Telemann Festival in Magdeburg) were sold out and received very good reviews. Since we already had invitations to stage a new production at several festivals, we set to work on a project that displays TEATRO ARCIMBOLDO’s special capabilities to best advantage. We are now proud to present our new Production

edit Additional Info
edit Membership
This guild is mostly composed of Belgian members, with a Canadian thrown in for international good measure.
edit Origins
The guild is named after the famous world/goth group Dead Can Dance. The Tag "DCD" (Dead Can Dance) can be pronounced "Day Say Day" in French (the preferred language of the guild) which is an homonym for "Decede" (fr: deceased): a tribute to the original leader's necromantic tendencies.
edit History
This guild was started by Lord Xantix and at its heydey had circa 8 members (over two timezones) - never quite enough to get competitive in the PvP arena. Guild leadership has transitioned a few times, but has never managed to coalesce into a strong authority with a canonized manifesto.

32. The Period Dance Group
The memories of a performing group formed at the University of Georgia in the 1970s.
http://perioddance.org/
updated September 9, 2008
What was it we did? We researched these dances and their music, learned them, and performed them in costume, usually in the round, with the audience seated as if at a ball from the period. We had songs, we had flirtations, we had vicious, wonderful gossip. Audiences loved us. Officially, the group had three goals: to provide an outlet for those interested in dance to acquire new skills; to aid in the production, acting, directing, and costuming of period drama; and to have FUN. Those capital letters are actually in the original Student Union organization form, and needless to say, it was this third goal that has made Period Dance live in our memories for all these years. So here is the official Period Dance Group website. Browse, comment, add to it. If you ever knew what "two rubber bands and a bird of paradise" or "teeny-tiny dance steps" or "It smelt like cheese to me!" meant, welcome back.

Dance Card: 1906
1894 one two-step You can see why the Turkey Trot and then the one-step were considered a welcome change of pace! The card was printed by "Jaccard" in Kansas City, Missouri, and appears to be from a fraternity or sorority ball, judging from the Greek letters in the small red logo on the front cover (again, click to enlarge).  It is helpfully dated 1906 in a large monogram above.  The white cord for the pencil survives, though the pencil itself is long gone. While modern custom attaches the cord through a hole punched in an upper corner, this one has the cord knotted around the fold. Edited 10/19/10 to add: Karen Ann in the comments writes: Phi Lambda Epsilon was founded February 12, 1892 at Clinton Academy, Missouri. There are currently seven extant chapters. It is described as a "national educational fraternity." Posted at 11:11 PM in Dance Cards Permalink Comments (4)
