THE EARLY DANCE CONSORT What is early dance? To newcomers to the world of early dance it may come as a surprise to discover that there are hundreds of documents which record the social dances of the European Courts in the Renaissance and Baroque eras - from the early fifteenth century to the late eighteenth century.
Having lain largely forgotten in archives for many years, in recent decades the dances preserved in these sources have enjoyed a new Renaissance as early dance specialists around the world re-interpret them for new audiences, just as the music of past centuries has been revived.
The Early Dance Consort
has been responsible for bringing this fascinating repertoire to life in classes workshops , lectures , balls and performances for audiences both in Sydney and around Australia and beyond. Contact Information

The Congress of Vienna Waltz
A few years ago, I tracked down a copy of the music for that very pretty waltz choreographed by John Hertz. I sampled the music from cassette, cleaned up a good deal of the noise, and compressed the result in MP3 format. The file size is less than one megabyte. If you download it, please send me a note so that I know my time was well spent. Feel free to link to this page from your own web site.
The musicians who recorded this performance are unknown. download congress.mp3 stream it download an Ogg Vorbis version stream it (MP3 players are listed here , and Ogg Vorbis players are listed here Commercial recordings of the Congress are now available, one from the Brassworks band and another from the Bangers and Mash band. The dance is a modern creation, inspired by dances from Regency England, and has become very popular in vintage dance circles throughout California. If you're interested in learning it, I suggest contacting the Friends of the English Regency (southern California) or attending one of the Gaskell Ball classes (northern California).

The Social Daunce Irregulars have been presenting victorian balls in Pasadena California for more than twenty years. We are dedicated to keeping the tradition of 19th Century ballroom dancing alive in our otherwise gray and pedestrian world, and providing our guests with an enjoyable and authentic victorian dance experience. All of our music and all of our dances date from the 19th Century, and all of our music is provided by a live orchestra We use no recorded music during our balls. To add to the ambiance, we suggest, but do not insist that our patrons wear the formal attire or military uniforms (any nation) of the 19th Century Our next Dance Class is
2 PM, Sunday November 21st.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search A man tap dancing. Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by a tapping sound that is created from metal plates attached to both the ball and heel of the dancer's shoe. These metal plates, when tapped against a suitable surface, create a percussive sound and as such tap dance is both a form of dance as well as the act of playing a musical instrument.

The influences of tap dancing may include:
  • African
    • Juba dancing , a very quick and competitive dance involving intricate foot work, stomping, hand clapping and slapping and patting parts of the body. Predating tap, there seems to be no historical evidence of percussive (on the heel and toe) dance footwear in this culture.

    • Lancashire clogging , a dance using percussive shoes. Early english "tappers" nailed or tacked copper pennies to the undersides of their shoes to create a light clicking sound, the triangular configuration used by these early dancers was the original inspiration for "three-screw" tap shoes - now the most commonly available tap shoe in Dance Stores.
