67. Bohemian National Polka
Choreography by Richard Powers, intended to portray the original 1830s National Style of Polka from Bohemia.
http://socialdance.stanford.edu/syllabi/BNP.htm
BOHEMIAN NATIONAL POLKA
This choreography by Richard Powers is based on research by the Czech dance historian Frantisek Bonus (1919-1999). It is intended to portray the steps and forms of the original 1830s National Style of Polka from Bohemia, ten years before "polkamania" swept the world.
Prof. Bonus' long and complex collection of figures was intended for stage performance by a professional company. Richard's choreography is still challenging but is social form danced for pleasure.
See a video here
Music: Josef Strauss' "Feuerfest Polka" at 104 beats/min (slower than modern polkas).
An especially good recording is by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra on the CD "Ein Straussfest". Telarc CD-80098.
Note: One bar of music equals the time of two walking steps or one polka step.
Introduction: 4 bars. Taking hands (his R, her L), honor partners: 1) Step back away from partner. 2) Close feet together, stand tall and look at partner. 3) Honor partner (she plies, head still raised, as he inclines slightly forward, flat back, bending at the waist). 4. Rise and face line-of-direction (LOD).

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search "Contemporary" redirects here. For other uses, see Contemporary (disambiguation) Contemporary history describes the history period that is immediately relevant to the present and is a certain perspective of modern history . Recent contemporary history's intentionally loose definition includes major events such as the Cold War and the European integration process, but not those events whose effects have been overcome. In Europe , the term "contemporary" may well be applied to the history since the Revolutions of 1989 . The effects of the World Wars era (encompassing World War I and World War II ) and the Cold War are still being felt in contemporary history. While the Cold War is undoubtedly of great relevance in contemporary European politics and society (especially in post-communist eastern European countries), the influence of the world wars have been rapidly declining since the outbreak of the Cold War and the start of the European integration process, and especially after the 1989 revolutions and the downfall of the Soviet empire. In Asia , the term "contemporary" may well be applied to the history since the end of the World War II in . By the end of World War II, wars for independence began, most area gained sovereignty status. But, these states of Asia were established under the effects of the Cold War.

Includes a calendar of upcoming events.
http://www.baers.org/
Home Events Calendar Gallery About the Regency ... Costume and Fiction Links The Bay Area English Regency Society (BAERS) celebrates the spirit of the early nineteenth century. The English Regency, familiar to us from the works not only of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer but C. S. Forester, Patrick O'Brian, and Tim Powers, was a spirited time bubbling over with creative energy in the arts and sciences, and yet a time when wit and grace were highly valued. Our dances come from English Country tradition, from Regency-era dance manuals such as Thomas Wilson, and from occasional modern Choreography done in the manner of the time. They are set to music by classical composers such as Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven, or to traditional country dance tunes. Dances and music are varied for each ball, according to its theme, which may range from the elegant to the rowdy. We offer second-Friday dance parties in Palo Alto, and three or four fancy-dress balls throughout the year. Newcomers are always welcome at our balls, picnics, and readings period costume is admired but by no means mandatory. We explore all aspects of life among the different social classes in Regency England, and occasionally venture into the American Federalist era. The Regency is a lens through which one can examine the history of the world, and we invite you to gaze along with us. See the Palo Alto Weekly's story and slide show on our second Friday dance parties!

    Introduction:
Dance has also been a point of discussion for writers, philosophers and religious leaders who often used dance imagery as part of their lexicon of metaphors. Figures as diverse as Aristotle, St. Augustine and Boccaccio all referred to dance in their works. Religious and literary works, including the Bible, constitute major sources of dance references, some metaphorical, some functional.
Any accurate understanding of dance is handicapped by the ephemeral nature of the art. Unlike the visual arts which are complete once created, the performing arts are ever re-created. For dance this is especially the case since, unlike music, no workable notation existed until the eighteenth century and no instructional treatises, at least in Western culture, existed before the early part of the fifteenth century.
There are, however, several avenues that lead toward information on dance in the medieval period. Dance references in literature, religious tomes and philosophical treatises comprise just one set of sources providing direction. Other writings, such as personal letters and ambassadorial missives add their part. Iconographic references can also be found, not only in art for art's sake but in decorations for household implements.
