Dancers and musicians meet about every three weeks in St Albans. Most meetings are led by either our principal tutor, Anne Daye, or another experienced tutor. The dances are selected from a wide range of styles and periods mainly focusing on the 15th to 17th centuries. Our musicians, The Presence , provide the live music for meetings. The highlight of the year is the May Revels , when members enjoy a feast, entertainments and dancing, and period costume is worn. We warmly welcome new dancers of all standards and seek to offer a light hearted, enjoyable and sociable setting for developing our understanding of historical dance and its context.

Accademia della Danza is a group within the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) Barony of Carolingia , in the East Kingdom (Note: all three are external links) If you are interested in dancing-for-dancing (which is not quite the same thing as dancing-for-socializing, although they are certainly not mutually exclusive) then you may be interested in Accademia della Danza. Previous dance experience is not required, all you need is interest. Accademia was founded around 1992 to pursue style practice, reconstruction research, and performance. Different incarnations over the years have concentrated on slightly different mixes of these pursuits, but they still pretty well represent what we are all about: Style: There is far more to dancing than just doing the steps of dances, and that is where style comes in. Style can be approached on several different levels. First, there is the style of the repertoire; you don't dance a sixteenth century French bransle the same way that you dance a 15th century Italian ballo. Next, there is the style of the music; if that 15th century Italian ballo is being played delicately on quiet strings you would dance it differently than if it were being played brightly on loud pipes. Finally, there is the style of mood and partner; you dance differently when you are happy and dancing with someone you wish to be spending time with than when you are annoyed and dancing with someone you have been paired with because your parents are trying to arrange a marriage or business deal.

What is the Guild? The Guild of the Silver Rondel is the dance guild in the Kingdom of Lochac, the area covered by Australia and New Zealand, in the Society for Creative Anachronism. Both dancers and musicians who play dance music can join. The guild has a charter, see the "Charter" section.
What does the Guild do?
The guild encourages pre-17th century dancing. It
  • Holds the Bal d' Argent - The social dance event of the year, the Bal d'Argent includes dance classes before and sometimes after. Holds competitions at the Bal d'Argent for the Silver Serif; one for an individual and another for a group performance. Holds a non-rondel competition at the Bal d'Argent for dancers who are not in the guild
How do you become a member?
If you are a dancer you need to show three members of the Order that you are able to do a number of dances well. If they agree they send a message to the Secretary and you become a member. The token for the dancing members of the Order is the Silver Rondelle - a silver ring suspended on red and blue ribbon. See the charter for more information on the types and categories of dances that you need to be able to do.

Il Ballarino By Fabritio Caroso, 1581 Translated by Lady Clara Beaumont (Rebecca Kletnieks)
Both books are included in this translation. For the poetry, I have tried to stay as close to the original meaning as possible, rather than attempting to stay true to the rhyme scheme or meter. Original rhyme scheme is included for anyone who might be interested.
Over the next year, I intend to make a second draft of this translation available to our Barony, and the Society as a whole, by refining it and publishing it online. In the meantime, many of the steps and dances have been reconstructed and taught at the

Cheat sheets, step descriptions, and a list of sources for SCA dances, including some from after 1600.

This is a collection of cheat-sheets designed to accompany the dance music collection published by Lady Phaedria d'Aurillac. It also includes descriptions of the dance steps , a and a short list of references . This collection is currently incomplete, but the intent is to give a concise description of all the dances, along with the source of the dance. Many dances traditionally danced in the SCA which aren't actually from before 1600 are also given, along with the damning evidence of their origin this collection will hopefully be complete, with the good, the bad, and the ugly. I hope that this collection will be sufficient to allow you to teach a dance once you've seen it danced once and have looked at the cheat sheet. Enjoy. If you know some dances that I don't have, or you have more source information, or if I have any errors, or if I am missing important variations in how things are danced, please let me know. My email address is: gl8f@virginia.edu. Thanks to those who have contributed: (Gretchen and Dani wrote the "Draft Dance Notes" for the College of Cour d'Or, which I have used extensively.)

C ontretemps was formed in 1985 by Barbara Segal and Frank Perenboom as a dance duo. Their aim is to present the dance of earlier centuries in a manner that is both lively and entertaining, while still remaining faithful to the original sources. Working from early manuscripts, printed choreographies and contemporary descriptions, Contretemps recreates the dances of past times, with authentic costumes and the music of the period either as a concert performance or integrated into stories to heighten the dramatic appeal. Whether as courtiers at Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles, or Harlequin and Columbine in the pantomimes of 18th century London, their performance is supremely entertaining. I ts experience in recreating historical dance has placed Contretemps in frequent demand as choreographers for large-scale productions. Barbara and Frank worked jointly on the production of Purcell's
