"A Very Celebrated Banbury Character"
Reconstructing Working Class Biography:
the case of William 'Old Mettle' Castle
Introduction
One truism of research is that individual members of the working class rarely leave much of a mark on the pages of history; and the farther back in time, the less possible it becomes to flesh out such lives. A small number left behind diaries or, more rarely, autobiographies, some of which have survived into the modern era. For the past four hundred years most, though by no means all, were registered at the date of baptism, marriage, baptisms of children, and burial. And, since 1841, the vast majority have been chronicled in the decadal censuses. Such entries in civil and ecclesiastical records freeze a few moments in time and space for posterity, but the minutiae of day-to-day existence remain largely undocumented. Once in a while, however, a working man leads such an unusual and colourful life that he features in a great number of contemporary and posthumous sources. One such life - that of William 'Old Mettle' Castle - is placed under scrutiny in this piece. The situation offers a rare opportunity for the historian to allow the primary sources (given here verbatim, retaining original spelling, indention, punctuation, etc) to convey their own story in a reasonably coherent manner, with merely a minimum degree of commentary and interpretation. As it happens, our subject leaves fewer impressions than most in those official sources which are the lifeblood of the historian. He died mere days before the taking of the first detailed nationwide census; leaves no trace of personal schooling or religious conviction (if such existed); apparently never married or produced children; as a non-householder had no right to vote, even after electoral reform; nor left a will. Yet from the less conventional (and more vibrant) evidence which survives, many revealing insights into the social, criminal, political and cultural life of a north Oxfordshire market town during the first half of the nineteenth century, as reflected in the experiences of one inhabitant, are laid bare.

43. Making History - BBC Radio 4; 28/05/02
Factsheet from a BBC Radio broadcast by Alun Howkins on the origins of Morris Dance.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/john.e.price/howkins.htm
Making History
Morris Dancing – the disputed origins
Professor Alun Howkins, professor of social history at Sussex University, discussed the origins of Morris Dancing. He said that, as with many folk customs, the origins are hidden in the mists of time and coloured by later perceptions, which may or may not have been correct. It is possible that the word Morris is derived from the word ‘Moorish’ or ‘morisco’ (a derogatory term meaning ‘little Moors’). Certainly in the very late middle ages, Morris dancers were sometimes referred to as morisco dancers, but it is pretty certain that, whatever the origin of the word , there is no evidence that the dance came from the Moors or entered the country with the armies of John o’ Gaunt or anything of that sort. Neither is there proof of any connection between Moorish dancing and Morris dancing. According to Professor Howkins, when people recorded these customs in the 1890s, they were obsessed with seeking out ancient beginnings. In the seventeenth century there had been suggestions of a connection with Moorish dancing and it was adopted as a convenient theory. It fitted in, for example, because some dancers blacked up their faces and attached bells to their legs, which was believed to be something to do with North Africa. Similarly, there is no evidence that Morris dancing has any connection with pagan festivals.

History of the Abram Morris Dance, and the modern revival side who perform the dance annually.
http://www.abram-morris-dancers.org.uk/contents.htm
Abram is an urban district within Wigan Metropolitan Borough on the Lancashire plain, midway between Liverpool and Manchester in the North West of England. It is a linear village in an agricultural setting which has developed in recent years (on that side of the main road not bounded by the Leeds-Liverpool canal and main London-Scotland railway line) to provide housing, mainly for commuters working in the cities of Manchester and Liverpool. The Abram Morris Dance or Abram Circle Dance as it is more usually (incorrectly) called, is the only traditional Morris dance to be performed entirely in a circular formation It is totally different in style from the later dances from Northwest England, which it pre-dates by over 100 years. These later dances from the region are processional in nature and were urban street dances that were often performed in the local carnivals and were therefore quite colourful and noisy, either accompanied by, or competing against, brass bands! Although Abram became a mining community in the 19 th century the dance was well established in its agricultural setting long before the pit-shafts were sunk. In fact one of the local mines was named “The Maypole Colliery” after the morris dancers’ maypole which stood nearby and was the scene of a tragic pit explosion in 1908 when 75 men were killed.

Dinatones Morris Dancers
The Dinatones Morris Dancers started in August 1978 with an advert in the Bury Times which brought in around eighteen members.
From that beginning we went from strength to strength, taking part in competitions all over the Northwest.
We have over the years taken part in most of the local carnivals and put on numerous displays in nursing homes school summer fairs etc.
In 1986 our `Tinies` won the B.A.M.C.O. Championships and we also got Junior Leader of The Year .Tiny Leader and Senior Mascot medals in the same year.
Always on the lookout for new members we practice on a Tuesday Evening at East Ward Primary School.
Girls aged from three years are welcome, ex dancers are also welcome.
Championships 2001
The T.M.D.A. annual Championships were held at Blue Dolphin Holiday Park in October.
It was the first championship competition we had entered for quite a few years, having had a rather unpleasant experience with another organisation in the past.
We were very pleased when we won Tiny and Senior Mascots of the year. 2nd place in the tots section, best tots mascot. Our faith in organisations was restored.
