From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Dance therapy , or dance movement therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement and dance for emotional, cognitive social , behavioral and physical conditions . Dance movement therapy strengthens the body/mind connection through body movements to improve both the mental and physical well-being of individuals . As a form of expressive therapy , DMT is founded on the basis that movement and emotion are directly related . The ultimate purpose of DMT is to find a healthy balance and sense of wholeness Since its birth in the 1940s, DMT has gained much popularity and has been taken to more serious and beneficial levels. Over the years, the practices of DMT have progressed, however, the main principles that founded this form of therapy have remained the same. Influenced by the “main principles” of this therapy, most DMT sessions are configured around four main stages: preparation, incubation, illumination, and evaluation . Organizations such as the American Dance Therapy Association and the Association for Dance Movement Therapy, United Kingdom maintain the high standards of profession and education throughout the field. DMT is practiced in places such as mental health rehabilitation centers, medical and educational settings, nursing homes, day care facilities, and other health promotion programs

Dance/Movement Therapy Dance is the most fundamental of the arts, involving direct expression through the body. Thus, it is an intimate and powerful medium for therapy. Based on the assumption that body and mind are interrelated, dance/movement therapy is defined by the American Dance Therapy Association as "the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process which furthers the emotional, cognitive and physical integration of the individual." Dance/movement therapy effects changes in feelings, cognition, physical functioning, and behavior. Dance as therapy came into existence in the 1940s, especially through the pioneering efforts of Marian Chace. Psychiatrists in Washington, D.C., found that their patients were deriving benefits from attending Chace's unique dance classes. As a result, Chace was asked to work on the back wards of St. Elizabeths Hospital with patients who had been considered too disturbed to participate in regular group activities. A non-verbal group approach was needed and dance/movement therapy met that need. The association has a code of ethics and has established standards for professional practice, education and training. Dance/movement therapy academic programs stress coursework in dance/movement therapy theory and practice, movement observation and analysis, human development, psychopathology, cultural diversity, research skills, and group work. In 1979, ADTA established an approval process for the purpose of evaluating these programs. Research and scholarly writings are published in the American Journal of Dance Therapy and in publications funded by the Marian Chace Memorial Fund of the ADTA.

Dance Therapy
Dance therapy is also called as Movement therapy. It is the use of choreographed or improvised movement as a way of treating physical, emotional, social and cognitive problems. People of various cultures, throughout ages have used this dance therapy to express emotions, to tell stories, to treat illness, to maintain communal bonds, and to celebrate important events. It helps us to promote personal health, growth, and well being.
How Dance therapy works
Dance therapy is based on the principle that the mind and the body are interrelated. Dance therapist found that the emotional and the mental problems are held in the body in the form of constrained movement patterns and muscle tension. It helps in promoting the healing process in many ways. People moving as a group brings them out of isolation, being with others brings us good feelings, also helps in creating powerful emotional and social bonds. It helps to ease the muscular rigidity by moving the body rhythmically, diminish anxiety, and also increases the energy. Moving creatively encourages self-expression and opens up new ways of thinking and doing.

Dance Therapy - Healing Through Freedom
by Renie Burghardt
Dancing goes back to primitive times, and magical powers have been attributed to it. When a witch doctor dances, it is to exorcise evil spirits from the sick person. I read that during the Middle Ages people even danced to avoid the plague. The Tarantella of Italy is believed to have originated after a poisonous spiders bite caused tarantism, and the cure for it was a jumping dance. Todays dance therapy evolved from the age-old idea that dancing has the power to cure. These days, dance therapists are mental health professionals, who treat problems such as neurosis, psychosis, and even alcoholism with the dance. Dancing is a primal response to rhythm and music, so the dance therapist uses dancers techniques to put the patient in touch with himself. A psychiatrist, of course, talks a patient through his problems, while a dance therapist uses the non-verbal, movement oriented techniques. In dance therapy, the patient is made aware of his feelings through sensation and movement. Emotional problems and conflicts become concrete this way, they say. By integrating body and mind, the goal of dance therapy is to build the self-esteem and self-identity of an emotionally ill person.
