Champagne Galop
Another widely popular Danish composition is The Champagne Galop by Hans Christian Lumbye . This piece of light classical music, which starts with the happy sound of a champagne cork popping, is today closely associated with the Tivoli Gardens (where Lumbye worked as music director and in-house composer, and where the piece was first performed). Several Danish films quote The Champagne Galop to introduce a Tivoli-sequence, for instance Reptilicus (1961). It is also associated with unbridled carnality as can be seen from its use in several Danish sex films such as Ole Ege's

He is pupil of Knud Jeppesen, Finn Høffding, Vagn Holmboe and Jörgen Jersild. Efter his final examination he taught at the Academy of Music in Aarhus for some years. Bent Lorentzen occupies a special position in modern Danish composition music. His point of departure was the Danish tradition of the 1950s (his teachers included Vagn Holmboe and Finn Høffding). However, he quickly left this period behind.
Bent Lorentzen has composed in well nigh all genres. His orchestral music includes concertos for oboe (1980), cello (1984), piano (1984), saxophone (1986), trumpet (1991) and violin (2001); his chamber music comprises solo works for organ, piano, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, guitar, violin, cello and double-bass, as well as string quartets and works with mixed ensembles (2-12 instruments). His choral music consists of a wealth of works in a special theatrical style. To these we can add electronic music and instrumental theatre works. Bent Lorentzen has probably had most significance as a music dramatist with fourteen operas so far, many of which have been staged abroad.

Flying start for Dacapo Music Store
Since we launched Dacapo Records' Music Store at the beginning of December, sales of Danish compositions music on the Internet have more than doubled. In Dacapo Records' new Music Store the whole CD catalogue of Denmark's national recording label has become accessible in various digital formats, while at the same time the CDs can be ordered by ordinary mail. The digital side of things is doing particularly well at the new website. Since we launched the Music Store at the beginning of December, Dacapo has doubled its sales of Danish composition music on the Internet. Over 1200 Dacapo downloads have flown off along the information highway in the first two months.
One of the explanations of the success is the special 24-bit files, which have a sound quality far beyond that of an ordinary CD. Hitherto the discerning classical audience has not bought music downloads because the very common MP3 format compresses the sound too much to do justice to a symphony orchestra, for example. We have now remedied that situation.
Easier to buy Danish music outside the borders of the country The foreign audience in particular has adopted Dacapo Records' Music Store and many of them e-mail us to express their great enthusiasm - now they can buy music in high sound quality by great Danish composers without having to worry about postage and packing across national boundaries. Dacapo Records' Music Store is thus becoming an important international marketing outlet for Danish music.

"To combine the savage with the refined" Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen - an established Danish outsider in conversation with Anders Beyer If anyone decided to assess Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen one of the major points must be his persistent attempts at avoiding the musical mainstream. He describes himself as being on the sidelines of Danish music, a statement that either shows a lack of self-knowledge or modesty; Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen is one of the most important figures in contemporary Danish composition. He has been called an established outsider, and is constantly at odds with 'the good taste'. Compromises do not exist for Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, whose art exhibits a consequent rejection of large scale topics. He shows a pronounced scepticism as to the viability of our culture in general, and a thoroughly black view of life in particular. If one philosophy of life and art approaches that of Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, t must be the absurdism of Samuel Beckett. As he puts t: The provocation, the bizarre instrumentations, can be heard in many of the composer's pieces. It is, however, possible with hindsight to question the embarrassing or provoking in combining cello and carhorn; after the Ligeti opera "Le Grand Macabre", it can hardly be called an embarrassing novelty. The composer answers: That's right. But It doesn't have that much to do with novelty. It's more a question of which audience you meet. It could be extremely embarrassing to arrive at a German music festival with something nice. Embarrassment is a wide expression. Embarrassment is depending on the 'style' in a milieu. The audience is afraid of getting into bad company. I have the de finite impression that at times I succeed in curling the toes of both the lay and the professional, which is an exquisite honour.

The composer has created a powerful musical vision of the end of time and The Last Judgment is an absorbing choral work in which the soloists sing no arias, but are directly involved in the dramatic events. Classical
Anders Koppel is a current Danish composer. Carl Nielsen (1865 - 1931) is an internationally known composer from Denmark. He is especially admired for his six symphonies and his concertos for violin, flute and clarinet. German baroque composer, Dietrich Buxtehude (1637 (?) - 1707) was born in Denmark.
Tango Jalousie
Though the tango is not a musical form normally associated with Denmark, one of the most universally known pieces of Danish music is the temperamental, romantic Tango Tzigane Jalousie (1925), also known as Tango Jalousie or simply Jalousie, composed by Jacob Gade.
