Danish, together with Swedish, derives from the East Norse dialect group, while Norwegian is classified as a West Norse language together with Faroese and Icelandic. A more recent classification based on mutual intelligibility separates modern spoken Danish, Norwegian and Swedish into a Mainland Scandinavian group while Icelandic and Faroese are placed in a separate category labeled Insular Scandinavian.
Written Danish and Its Similarities to Norwegian Bokmal

Proficient speakers of any of the three languages can understand the others, though studies have shown that speakers of Norwegian generally understand both Danish and Swedish far better than Swedes or Danes understand each other. The Danish Language
The Danish language belongs to the East Scandinavian branch of the Germanic subfamily of the Indo-European languages.
GERMANIC LANGUAGES Danish Like Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic, Danish is derived from a common Scandinavian language, which can be traced to runic inscriptions of the 3rd century AD. Significant changes occurred in the parent language during the Viking age (circa 800-1050), leading to distinct differences between the East Scandinavian dialects, from which Danish and Swedish evolved, and the West Scandinavian dialects, which are the sources of Norwegian (Nynorsk) and Icelandic.
The history of the Danish language may be divided into three main periods:
  • Old Danish (800-1100), Middle Danish (1100-1500) Modern Danish (from 1500)
  • The Danish alphabet
The Danish alphabet has a total of 29 letters:

Danish Language - A quick overview:
      Similarities between Scandinavian languages:
The two Scandinavian languages Swedish and Danish derives from the Eastern Norsk dialect group, it’s a believe that Norwegians could understand both Dansk and Swedish and both Danes and Swedes can understand Norwegian better as compared to they both understand each other, if we talk about written Dansk, its very close to Norwegian and its also been observed by the foreigners that difference between the three main Scandinavian languages is not great. Danish had undergone many changes over a large period of time and though it had also loaned words from others, therefore the rules for the spelling have often changed.
      Danish Language Sound System:
Dansk can be categorized as language with a unique sound system among other world’s languages, a notable feature called “Stød” or “Glottal stop” makes it quite distinguished, which is actually considered as development of word accents, and because of this Dansk is called a flat one, in most part of Denmark particularly in the southern region there is more low Germanic impact and stød is absent in most cases. The stress is more phonemic as compared to neighboring Scandinavian languages.
