    Types of Deafness
Decrease in the ability to detect and recognize sounds is termed as hearing loss or deafness. What are the different types of deafness? Let us find out. Deafness, as we all know, is the loss of hearing that can be caused by various reasons such as certain illnesses or physical trauma. Genetic factors can be responsible for deafness. It can also result from a long-term exposure to noise. Before moving on, you may like to read about hearing loss . Let us look at the different types of deafness.
Conductive: When sound is not conducted through the outer or middle ear, conductive hearing loss occurs. This type of deafness is often of the mild form and the sound quality is not affected, if the sound is amplified.
Perceptive: In this type of deafness, the sound waves can reach the inner ear but there is an impairment in the nerves leading to the brain, due to which sound cannot be sensed. In case of a sensorineural hearing loss, the inner ear, the cochlea or the auditory nervous system of a person is impaired. In rare cases, a defect in the functioning of the auditory sensors of the brain can cause deafness.
Deafness due to genetic factors: In case of the presence of a dominant deafness gene in the family, deafness may persist across the generations. Certain congenital defects can also cause hearing loss.

    Alternative names:
Decreased hearing; deafness; loss of hearing Definition: The total or partial inability to hear sound in one or both ears. Considerations: Prevention of hearing loss is more effective than the treatment. Minor decreases in hearing, especially of higher frequencies, are normal after age 20. Some nerve deafness (or loss of hearing) affects 1 out of 5 people by age 55. It usually comes on gradually and rarely ends in complete deafness. See hearing loss of aging. Alzheimer's disease or other neurological problems may sometimes be falsely suspected in older people because they have hearing problems. Hearing problems may be the reason some children's speech develops slowly.

How do deaf people answer a doorbell? Hear a smoke alarm?

Deaf people don't worry about missing the doorbell: flashing lights, rather than chimes, alert them to visitors. Similarly, smoke detectors, phones and alarm clocks can all be converted to feature deaf-friendly flashing lights or very loud alarms, and even vibrating mechanisms that shake the bed or buzz in the occupant's pocket. Entire systems can be designed that combine all these alerts into a small, portable vibrating beeper.
How do deaf people use the phone?
How do dogs help the deaf?

While there are a variety of technologies available to assist with alerts and alarms, deaf people can also employ the services of a hearing dog. Any breed of dog can become a hearing dog; training is similar to that for Seeing Eye dogs. The dogs alert their masters with a nudge when phones ring or smoke detectors sound, or by nudge and lead them to the source of the sound. Since the dog, unlike a machine, can distinguish threatening sounds, the hearing dog is a good all-purpose alert.

What are the top causes of hearing loss in children? For the answers, I turned to the Regional and National Summary Report of Data from the Annual Surveys of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and Youth done by the Gallaudet University's Gallaudet Research Institute . This survey looks at the characteristics of thousands of deaf and hard of hearing students nationally. Unless otherwise indicated, data is from the 2004-2005 report, which has a detailed breakdown of pregnancy-related, post-natal and genetic/syndromic causes. The 2006-2007 report did not have such a breakdown.
    Pregnancy-Related: Prematurity
The most common prenatal/pregnancy-related cause was "consequence of prematurity," at 4% of the cases of pregnancy-related causes nationally. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, about 5% of children born before 32 weeks (8 months of pregnancy) have hearing loss by the time they are five years old.

Speech Problems and Deafness in Children
Your baby communicates with you through non-verbal means with gestures, facial expressions and body language. Learning to verbalize her thoughts, feelings and desires is an important part of her development. Many babies speak their first word around a year, but of course, each baby is unique and it could be quite a bit longer until that first "Mama" or "Dada." (For information on speech milestones, please see Language Development Because speech is so closely linked to hearing, difficulties speaking may indicate some hearing loss or deafness. Below, you will read about the different types of speech and hearing problems, their causes, and the appropriate action to take if you suspect your child of having either. Speech Problems and Stuttering There are many reasons why your child may talk a little later, or even much later, than other children his age. Few of them are serious, and most kids eventually catch up. For example, most girls talk earlier than most boys. A child's environment can affect the development of speech, too. If your family is not one that talks a great deal, your child will probably be a late talker and will probably talk less than some other children. If he spends days in a child care center or nursery school where one caregiver is responsible for several children, development of speech may be slowed. Competition for individual attention at home may be responsible for late talking, also. For example, if you have two children very close in age, or twins, you may not be able to devote a great deal of individual time to each. The private language twins sometimes develop is more often the result of lack of one-on-one time with a parent than a desire to talk only to each other.

The hearing test known as the brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) or brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) detects electrical activity in the cochlea and auditory pathways in the brain in much the same way that an antenna detects radio or TV signals or an EKG detects electrical activity of the heart. The response waveform consists of a series of peaks numbered with Roman numerals: peak I is produced by the cochlea and later peaks are produced within the brain. The response from an ear that is deaf is an essentially flat line. In the sample recordings shown below Puppy 1 heard in both ears, Puppy 2 was deaf in the left ear, Puppy 3 was deaf in the right ear, and Puppy 4 was deaf in both ears.

    Deafness: Types, Causes, and Treatments
Deafness is the inability to hear. It can affect one or both ears, either totally or partially. Deafness may be present at birth (congenital deafness), or it may occur later, suddenly or gradually. Q: Are there any obvious signs that a person may be deaf? A: Yes. Deafness may be suspected if a person fails to react to sounds at various levels or speaks more loudly than is necessary. A child who is partially deaf may give the impression of being bored or uninterested and will have difficulty in learning to speak. Such a child may not progress well at school, and it is often a teacher's report that first leads a parent to suspect that the child may have impaired hearing. Deafness in an older person can lead to a sense of isolation, which can make the person bad-tempered. The degree of hearing loss, however, depends on the kind of deafness involved. Q: What different kinds of deafness are there?

        What Is Deafness Caused By?
Permanent hearing loss can be caused by old age, drug toxicity, injury or untreated ear infections. A dog can also be born without the ability to hear, because of a genetic or anatomical problem. Certain breeds also have a high occurrence of inherited deafness that usually turns out to be permanent. These are usually piebald, spotted or merle-colored breeds.
        How Is Deafness Diagnosed?
The following signs may indicate that your dog may be suffering from some form of hearing loss:
        • Your dog turns the wrong way when you call him.
        • He shows no response to outside stimuli, such as the doorbell ringing or other dogs barking.
        • His head shakes.
        • He shows no response or seems confused when given familiar vocal commands.
        • He barks excessively.
        • He paws his ears or appears to have itchy, painful ears.
        • A smelly discharge comes from his ears.
