DEAFNESS IN DOGS
Normal, healthy puppies are deaf for the first 10-14 days of life. This is because their ears are not fully developed at birth and their ear canals do not open untill they are about two weeks old. Dozens of breeds are at risk from congenital deafness, which is present from birth. The condition causes permanent deafness and can be relate to coat colour. The Animal Health Trust and a number of other organisations regularly test the hearing of entire litters from five to seven weeks old using the Brain Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) system and it is only since this test has been carried out that breeders have realised that dogs can be bilaterally (deaf in both ears) or unilaterally (hearing in just one ear). The test detects electrical activity in the cochlea and auditory pathways, recording the way the brain responds to clicking sounds.

occurs when sound vibrations don't go from the air around a person to the moving bones of the inner ear as well as they should. If something is blocking the ear canal, like ear wax, there is a conductive hearing loss. If there is fluid inside the inner ear where the bones are, like the fluid from an inner ear infection, there is a conductive hearing loss. If the bones of the ear get a buildup of calcium, from a disease perhaps, and they can't move as freely as they need to, there is a conductive hearing loss. Generally, conductive hearing loss doesn't cause a total inability to hear, but it does cause a loss of loudness and a loss of clarity. In other words, sounds are heard, but they are weak, muffled, and distorted.
Neural hearing loss (Nerve deafness) occurs when the auditory nerve, which goes from the inner ear to the brain, fails to carry the sound information to the brain. Neural hearing loss can cause a loss of loudness or a loss of clarity in sounds.
Mixed hearingloss is a combination of conductive and neural hearing losses.

      What Is Deafness?
Deafness in cats is a temporary or permanent loss of hearing that can be caused by infection, certain drugs, ear mites, congenital defects, old age or injuries.
      What Causes Deafness in Cats?
Temporary hearing loss can be the result of mild infections or a side effect of certain drugs like amino-glycoside antibiotics and diuretics. Another common cause of temporary hearing loss in cats is ear mites, which damage the ear drum, resulting in inflammation of the middle ear. Tumors or polyps in the ear can also affect hearing. Permanent hearing loss can be caused by old age, continued exposure to loud noises, injury or severe, untreated ear infections, especially those of the middle ear. All-white, blue-eyed cats are often born deaf.
The following signs may indicate that your cat is suffering from hearing loss:
      • He shows no response to outside stimuli, such as loud noises.

What is deafness?
A person with deafness has some form of hearing loss. Hearing loss usually begins with difficulty hearing high-frequency sounds, such as speech. There are two main types of deafness: conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss is usually caused by a condition that interferes with conduction of sound waves into the ear. A good example is a ear that is plugged with wax. Those with sensorineural hearing loss have a problem with the acoustic nerve. A person with presbycusis has hearing loss that naturally occurs with aging. Most cases of hearing loss are due to aging.
What are the symptoms of deafness?
Symptoms of deafness depend on the underlying cause. Common symptoms of deafness include a progressive loss of hearing and difficulty discriminating between different sounds. Some will complain of difficulty understanding speech, especially in a noisy environment.

Deafness and the User Experience
by Lisa Herrod
How many times have you been asked this question: if you had to choose, which would you prefer to be: deaf or blind? The question illustrates the misconception that deafness is in some way the opposite of blindness—as though there’s some sort of binary representation of disability. When we look at accessible design for the deaf, it’s not surprising to see it addressed in a similar fashion: audio captioning is pretty much the equivalent of alt text on images for most designers. Captioning by itself oversimplifies the matter and fails many Deaf people. To provide better user experiences for the Deaf, we need to stop thinking of deafness as simply the inverse of hearing—we need to understand deafness from both a cultural and linguistic perspective. Moreover, to enhance the online user experience for the deaf, we must understand how deafness influences web accessibility.
