zSB(3,3) Hearing loss can stir up some pretty strong feelings. The arts offer an outlet for those feelings. One popular medium for expressing feelings about deafness and hearing loss is poetry. When I was in elementary school and we were learning about poetry, we were asked to write a poem about something we knew about. My first feeble attempt at a poem was titled "The Deaf Ear." As the title suggests, it was about what it was like to not be able to hear and understand people. Fortunately, there are other, better poems about deafness by people with hearing loss available for your reading pleasure. Some of these poems are classics reproduced on the web; others are new homegrown efforts. A few books collecting deaf poetry have even been published.

Hearing sensitivity is indicated by the quietest sound that an animal can detect, called the hearing threshold . In the case of humans and some animals, this threshold can be accurately measured by a behavioral audiogram . A record is made of the quietest sound that consistently prompts a response from the listener. The test is carried out for sounds of different frequencies. There are also electro-physiological tests that can be performed without requiring a behavioral response. Normal hearing thresholds within any given species are not the same for all frequencies. If different frequencies of sound are played at the same amplitude, some will be perceived as loud, and others quiet or even completely inaudible. Generally, if the gain or

Welcome to Deaf Basketball Australia's website. This website will provide details of what is happening around Australia and provide some history of deaf basketball as well. Please read through the site to see the recent changes to the NDBCC as well as to see what is happening around the country. Each state association has its own website that provides details of what is happening within that state, while DBA’s website concentrates on what affects all of the players, officials and supporters around the country. Some of the important projects at the moment include: Big Kids Junior Development Camps Selection and preparation for the 2011 World Deaf Basketball Championships in Palermo, Sicily. South Australia’s 50 th birthday celebrations at the 2011 NDBCC in Adelaide Details of these important events are found in the news section as well as the relevant parts of the website. DBA would also like to have a clear idea of where deaf and HOH officials participate in mainstream basketball throughout Australia. DBA has a strong and rewarding relationship with Basketball Australia, and we would like to understand where deaf and HOH officials participate throughout the country, and feature these important people in sections of our website.
