Technology plays key role in Wake Forest debate activities
By Vanessa Urruela Willis
October 1, 2000 Wake Forest University is helping young people ages 16-24 nationwide use the Internet to learn more about the political process as the university prepares to host the Oct. 11 presidential debate between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Through a university arrangement with Opinioneering Corp., young people across the United States are participating in an online discussion about campaign issues such as foreign policy and tax reform as the debate and election approach. A group of local citizens has also been selected to participate in a national online survey at Wake Forest during the Oct. 11 debate through a university arrangement with Speakout.com. Students from more than 70 high schools from Florida to Alaska are participating in another online project about campaign issues using a curriculum created by Wake Forest professors. University students designed the Internet site for the high school project. Young people find their way to the online projects through links on Wake Forest's new debate Web site

Topics: Environmental Science High School Sure, your teen can debate his way out of a paper bag. He can explain why chores are unethical, or why a later curfew is a fundamental freedom. But formal debate, the kind favored in courtrooms, governmental bodies, and high school debate competitions, isn't about standing behind your beliefs. In fact, the art of debate lies in the fact that a master debater should be able to skillfully defend any argument, no matter what he himself believes. Not sure how your teen fits into the equation? In high school, students are often given writing assignments where they must defend a statement or argument. Same goes for the SAT essay section. But seeing both sides of an issue, and being able to talk eloquently about them, isn't just an academic essential: it's also a way to make your teen a more thoughtful and well-informed citizen. Ready to get started? Here's how to stage your own formal debate!

Technology plays a key role in Wake Forest debate activities
By Vanessa Urruela Willis
September 6, 2000 Wake Forest University is using its Internet technology to respond to the Commission on Presidential Debates' request for help in reaching young voters. Several Internet projects and partnerships are underway as the university prepares for the scheduled Oct. 11 Presidential Debate at campus landmark Wait Chapel. "Our two goals are to encourage young people to vote by reaching them through technology, and to enable anyone to experience the debate electronically, including alumni and friends the world over," said Bob Mills, associate vice president for university advancement. Wake Forest has been nationally recognized for its use of technology since the 1996 launch of a technology initiative that provides all students with laptop computers and printers. The initiative has also increased the role of the Internet in the academic curriculum. Yahoo! Internet Life magazine has ranked Wake Forest 19th among America's "Most Wired" universities and research schools. The university is partnering with Rock the Vote, a nonprofit organization, to host a free concert in Winston-Salem that will wrap around the debate. Rock the Vote is a group that works to increase youth involvement in the political process.

The Shapley-Curtis debate provides a unique opportunity for astronomical instruction. It combines for the students examples public speaking and the ability to explain what they have learned as well as the importance of historical context for scientific discovery. Have the students reenact the debate, perhaps having different actors play Shapley and Curtis for different points in the argument. Much of the information needed to research this debate, including lecture notes for undergraduate-level students, can be found at http://anctwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/diamond_jubilee/debate20.html . Another useful resource is a paper by Virginia Trimble called "The 1920 Shapley-Curtis Discussion: Background, Issues, and Aftermath." It was Hubble who put an end to this debate in 1923 by finding a special type of star called a Cepheid variable star in the Andromeda galaxy. This special type of star changes brightness on very regular intervals and this interval is related to its luminosity. So by measuring the period (time difference) between the brightest moments of variability we can find its luminosity and calculate its distance just like the galaxies with known Luminosities. For more information and activities on finding distances using Cepheid Variable stars see http://www.itpa.lt/~astro/aol/market/experiments/middle/skills207.html

Most parents are happy when their elementary school age children manifest an interest in little league baseball, after-school soccer, or beginning track-and-field. Parents feel that athletics can teach their youngsters how to compete with others and also how to function as part of a team. There is, however, another activity which can help young children learn to be part of a team but which places less emphasis on competition and which is, in addition, less gender specific than athletics. That activity is debate. According to one educator (Lybbert, 1985), the debate discipline has three goals: (1) the enhancement of critical thinking and reasoning abilities; (2) academic advancement or development; and (3) the promotion of communication skills. For young children, the focus can be on the development of oral communication skills. And beginning a debate program with young children in elementary school can go a long way toward removing the somewhat elitist aura that surrounds debate in high school and college. KIDSPEAK Littlefield and Littlefield (1989) describe an innovative after-school program for grades three through six which was specifically designed to teach oral communication skills to children. The program is called KIDSPEAK and was initiated in 1987. Debate represents only one of the units contained in the program, along with such topics as oral reading, listening, creative expression, storytelling, communication etiquette, etc. Teachers who were interested in the debate activity were given a short training session and access to additional help if they felt they needed it.
