DESCRIPTIONS:
John McCain Vietnam War POW CIA - Department of Defense Files 73 pages of CIA and Department of Defense documents and transcriptions, of foreign broadcasts, from 1967 to 1973, relating to John McCain's captivity in North Vietnam. On October 26, 1967, John McCain was flying an A-4E Skyhawk on his twenty-third mission over North Vietnam. This mission was his first encounter with the heavy air defenses deployed by the North Vietnamese in and around Hanoi. His plane was hit by a Russian made surface to air missile. McCain ejected and landed badly injured in Truc Bach Lake. He was dragged from the lake and beaten by civilians along the shore. Thus began John McCain's 5 1/2 years of captivity in North Vietnam. He was taken to Hoa Lo Prison, also known as "Hanoi Hilton," where he was refused medical treatment, interrogated, and beaten. After his captors learned his father was Admiral McCain he was given medical treatment. The 35 pages of original documents in this set are intercept reports from the CIA'S Foreign Broadcast Information Service and the Message Center of the U.S. Department of Defense National Military Command Center. The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) is an open source intelligence component of the CIA's Directorate of Science and Technology that monitors, translates, and disseminates within the US Government openly available news and information from non-US media sources. The FBIS became known as the Open Source Center (OSC)in 2005.

We've discussed multiple times the massive unsubstantiated hype around the concept of "cyberwar" , which mostly has been led by former government officials who are seriously cashing in on the hype. Yet, every time we mention this, we get people insisting that we just don't know the "real story" and the "threat" is really big. But we keep waiting for some evidence to support that theory.
Seymour Hersh, over at the New Yorker, who tends to be the most connected reporter around when it comes to getting the inside scoop on what's happening in the US military, has a (typically) long and worth reading analysis of the whole "cyberwar" concept that effectively agrees with exactly what we've been saying all along: it's totally hyped up beyond reality, in an effort to build the reputations of a few people and to cash in on a trend. People on all sides of the issue all seemed to point out to Hersh that "cyberwar" is blowing things out of proportion. There's plenty of

Hurricane images are from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). DMSP operates day/night and dusk/dawn satellites. Daytime images are taken with sunlight striking perpendicular to the storm while dusk/dawn images have sunlight glancing across the top of the storm. Images from F12 and F14 are daytime images; those from the F13 satellite are dawn/dusk. Each hurricane is shown in two separate images showing views in the OLS visible near-infrared band and the OLS thermal-infrared band. The spatial resolution of the imagery used is 2.7 km. The thermal infrared images show the temperatures of the cloud tops, and ocean and land surfaces, while the visible-near infrared images show reflected sunlight during the day and reflected moonlight or man-made lights during the night.

The Most Intense Tropical Storms of 1998 Poster is 36X24, black and white. The 14 most intense tropical storms from the 1996 calendar year are shown with thermal infrared imagery from the DMSP Operational Linescan System. Although 1998 produced fewer tropical storms than the average, the storms were particularly intense. The destructive power of these storms was evident in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. Thousands of lives and homes were destroyed by flooding, landslides and wind. The roster of most intense tropical storms includes 4 typhoons, 5 cyclones, and 5 hurricanes. Each image is accompanied by the vital statistics of the storm, including maximum wind speed, date and time of the image, latitude and longitude of the eye, and duration of the storm.
