Delaware Indians
Home Library US History Encyclopedia Delaware Indians, Native Americans who call themselves Lenape are the largest native group to survive from the mid-Atlantic region, primarily because they neither fought a major war nor fell victim to slave raids. Moreover, they held an annual rite of thanksgiving called the gamwing (big house rite), which provided a cultural focus that sustained them through continual adversity. Their aboriginal lifeline was the river named for them that has branch drainages covering New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and adjoining sections of New York, Connecticut, and Delaware. The Delawares' traditional culture was based in the village with farm fields and hunting territories within a watershed. Kinship was traced through the mother, and eachlocal segment of a matrilineal clan belonged to one of three overarching units (a phratry ) whose emblems were the Wolf, Turtle, and Turkey. The Spirit of the Border
Ancient America Rediscovered The Last Crossing: A Novel Oh What a Slaughter: Massacres in the American West, 1846 - 1890
The Spirit of the Border Details: Unabridged ISBN: 0786108967 Category: Fiction, Westerns Keywords: American frontier, Jim Girty, 1700s, 18th century, Delaware Indians, native Americans, Ohio Valley, settlers, village of peace, Christian, missionaries, war club, revenge, deathwin Author: Zane Grey Publisher: Blackstone Audiobooks Length: 9 hours and 50 min. Description
The American frontier in the 1700s produced some men of utter ruthlessness, and Jim Girty was one of the worst. Living among the Delaware Indians in the Ohio Valley, Girty and his brothers incited acts of savagery and war against the white settlers. One of Jim Girty's targets was the Village of Peace, a settlement of Christian Indians who had been converted by Moravian missionaries. Girty and his ruffians, playing on the fear and hostility of surrounding tribes, incited them to gather at the village, where they threw the ominous war club on the ground. Lewis Wetzel, a lonely, taciturn hunter whose family had been the victim of Delaware atrocities, swore revenge on Girty. The intrepid Wetzel, called "Deathwind" by the Delawares, had saved Fort Henry from Indian attack, but was he any match for the odious Girty?
