FOR RELEASE: October 9, 2006
Libraries in Delaware Choose Upgrade to EnvisionWare PC Management
ATLANTA Early in the evaluation process it became apparent that the libraries would need to replace the proprietary hardware from the former vendor with new cash management equipment and receipt printers. EnvisionWare provided a special migration program to facilitate the move to its open architecture hardware. The software migration was performed in phases with EnvisionWare Field Engineers assisting local technical staff in the system wide deployment. As each new library went live, it was managed locally and centrally by the library technical staff with backup at EnvisionWare’s World Class Support Center in Atlanta using EnvisionWare Central Management. To obtain full compliance with the system’s goals, one new software feature was required which involved an enhancement to the EnvisionWare User Validation Rules Wizard. That update was actually delivered in a maintenance release that was posted during the original trial period. As such the library was able to evaluate a released version of the

Biographical Note
Frederic W. Goudy, world renowned type designer, was born March 8, 1865 in Bloomington, Illinois. Raised in the small prairie town of Shelbyville, Illinois, in his youth Goudy worked as the high school janitor and as an assistant to Shelbyville's leading paperhanger. During this time, guided by an old worn copy of a Bruce Foundry specimen book, Goudy cut his first type face from a roll of flowered wall paper. Graduating from Shelbyville High School in 1883, Goudy became a bookkeeper. When his father was appointed Federal probate judge in Hyde County in the frontier territory of South Dakota, Goudy worked as a clerk and bookkeeper in his father's real estate office. He continued bookkeeping after he moved to Minnesota in 1887 and later moved on to Chicago to work as a clerk in a bookstore. While examining the books he sold, he determined that they were not printed as well as they might be. He began to read every available book on typography and made visits to veteran printers for a hands-on education.

INTRODUCTION Obedient miniature adult, mischievous free spirit, or mini-consumerthe image of the child in society has changed many times over the past three hundred years. The books given to children are meant to mold or train the young mind to the values of their elders. For this reason, children's literature is often more reflective of the adult society than of the intended readers. In western Europe, there was no separate category of books for children before the eighteenth century. The Bible , stories of saints and martyrs, and bestiaries or books about exotic animals, were probably the first printed books available to children. The woodcut illustrations of these early works would be intriguing even for those unable to read the text. As early as the fourteenth century, children learned to read using horn books. These earliest primers consisted of a piece of paper or parchment fit into a recess in a tablet of wood or leather. On the paper the letters of the alphabet, a set of Roman numerals and perhaps the words of the Lord's Prayer were written or printed. As the student learned to read, the simple letters would be replaced by longer sentences.

Color Printing in the Nineteenth Century
Color Printing in the Nineteenth Century , a new exhibition in the Special Collections Exhibition Gallery of the Morris Library, University of Delaware, is curated by Iris Snyder of the Special Collections Department. An illustrated catalog of the exhibition can be purchased by contacting the Office of the Vice Provost for Libraries, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware 19717-5267. The nineteenth century was the turning point for technical development in color illustration. At the beginning of the century, books with color plates were hand-colored by the artist, using techniques dating back to the Renaissance. A hundred years later, the photo-reproductive techniques and the steam-driven printing press took printing out of the hands of the artist and introduced processes which would be used until the computer revolution of our day. Color Printing in the Nineteenth Century documents these changes in color printing technology by displaying some of the finest examples of books illustrated in color, published from the last quarter of the eighteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century.
