Denmark Environment - current issues
Denmark Geography Environment - current issues: air pollution, principally from vehicle and power plant emissions; nitrogen and phosphorus pollution of the North Sea; drinking and surface water becoming polluted from animal wastes and pesticides Definition: This entry lists the most pressing and important environmental problems. The following terms and abbreviations are used throughout the entry:
Acidification - the lowering of soil and water pH due to acid precipitation and deposition usually through precipitation; this process disrupts ecosystem nutrient flows and may kill freshwater fish and plants dependent on more neutral or alkaline conditions (see acid rain).
Acid rain - characterized as containing harmful levels of sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxide; acid rain is damaging and potentially deadly to the earth's fragile ecosystems; acidity is measured using the pH scale where 7 is neutral, values greater than 7 are considered alkaline, and values below 5.6 are considered acid precipitation; note - a pH of 2.4 (the acidity of vinegar) has been measured in rainfall in New England.
Aerosol - a collection of airborne particles dispersed in a gas, smoke, or fog.

North Sea in Hirtshals, Jutland Photo by Tomasz Sienicki (wikimedia commons) The smallest of the Scandinavian countries, the Danish mainland is attached to the northern tip of Germany by a small piece of land. The rest of the county comprises of islands, which are of course, surrounded by water.  The island of Sealand is home to the capital city of Copenhagen, which looks eastwards towards its neighbor Sweden, to the North West is Norway, and way out to the west across the North Sea is Britain. Denmark comprises of over 400 hundred islands; the majority uninhabited, with an area of 43,098 square meters or 16,640 square miles, and includes the Faroe Islands and Greenland.  The country is divided into four main regions; Jutland - the mainland, Sealand - the largest island, and home to nearly 40% of the country’s population, Bornholm - the place to head for good beaches and a favorite holiday spot, and finally Funen - which includes picturesque islands, and famous for being the home of Hans Christian Anderson.  The landscape is fertile, low lying countryside interspersed with lakes, fjords and beech forests. Each region can be further broken down; here are just a few of the best bits for holidaymakers with campervan hire or motorhome rental:

Endangered Species

The Danish flora consists of approximately 1,200 species of higher plants, i.e. pteridophytes, conifers and flowering plants. A couple of hundred of these species are imported or adventive species, anthropochores, which have been able to maintain their numbers through reproduction by seeds. Many of the medicinal plants of yore such as calamus and motherwort, and herbs, including lovage and ground elder, belong to this group together with water thyme, rice grass and giant hogweed. There still remain around 1000 naturally native, indigenous, Danish species. Books on Danish flora may contain over 1500 species, but more than 300 species of plants have not become naturalised after their arrival, and constitute a very unstable and changeable element. Denmark's flora belongs to the temperate, nemoral deciduous forest zone. Of the approximately 640 mosses found in Denmark, there are around 150 species of liverwort and some 490 leaf mosses and bog mosses; around 900 species of lichen have been found. The numbers for other groups of plants are more uncertain; there are some 3000 species of large fungi and several thousand species of microscopic fungi. There are also some 350 species of attached algae, to which can be added a large number of plankton algae. Finally, there is an unknown number of bacterial species.

This article is from the Nordic countries FAQ , by Antti Lahelma and Johan Olofsson, with numerous contributions by others.
3.2.1 Denmark Geography, Climate, Vegetation
Denmark is the southernmost of the Nordic countries. Located between
the North Sea on the west and the Baltic Sea on the southeast, Denmark
is separated from Norway by the Skagerrak and from Sweden by the Kattegat and the Øresund. In the south, it shares a 68 km border with Germany. It consists of the peninsula of Jutland (Jylland) in the west, and an archipelago of 406 islands in the east, of which the most important ones are Zealand (Sjælland) on which Copenhagen is located, and Funen (Fyn). Denmark is part of Europe's temperate deciduous forest belt. The natural vegetation in most of the country is a mixed forest, with the beech most common tree. However, almost all parts of the country are under cultivation today, and virtually all the

The Quarternary Period (1.6 million years ago-present day)

The Danish landscape was formed largely during the last ice age and the time thereafter. Beneath the present landscape, however, are rocks and deposits from much earlier times.

The Deep Structure [top]
Crystalline rocks, which comprise the oldest component of the basement, extend beneath the entire country at varying depths. The crystalline basement reaches the surface on the island of Bornholm that forms part of the Fenno-Scandian Border Zone which runs in a northwesterly direction through Scania and the Kattegat to North Jutland. The present relief of the basement is the result of movements in the Earth's crust which took place long after the basement itself had been formed.

The Precambrian Era [top]
The crystalline basement dates back to the Precambrian era, and consists of gneiss and granite created by metamorphic and igneous processes deep in the Earth's crust in connection with mountain-building events. In places, black dolerite dykes cut through the gneiss and the granite. The Bornholm basement was formed at the same time as the basement in southeast Sweden, some 1,750-1,500 million years ago. The basement in the rest of Denmark, which has been studied in a small number of deep borings, is much younger. It is comparable to the basement in the south of Norway and the west of Sweden which was formed some 1,150-800 million years ago.
