Prehistory Viking Age During the Viking Age, c. 800-1100, a strong royal power developed, as is demonstrated by several strategically placed circular fortresses of impressive size. The period was characterised by the frequent Viking expeditions, which led to the conquest of England for a short period in the 11th Christianity The Kalmar Union From Aristocratic Government to Absolutism The break with the Roman Catholic Church in 1536,after three years of civil war, changed the Danish Church into a Lutheran princely church. Denmark thus joined the Protestant side in the lengthy religious wars, which ravaged Europe until 1648. Internally, the new State Church became a tool for ideological and moral indoctrination of the population by the greatly strengthened central power. the Royal Law of 1665, which in general remained in force until the abolition of absolutism in 1848 and the adoption of a democratic constitution in 1849. Recently, the Council of Europe sponsored an exhibition of Bronze Age artifacts from collections throughout Europe to illustrate the shared heritage and destiny of its inhabitants. This book documents that exhibit. The bulk of its text and illustrations focuses on five major influences on the development of Western civilization: The Adventurers and Travellers of the Bronze Age, The Heroes in Their Palaces, The Heroes: Life and Death, The World of the Gods, and The Awakening of Europe. Each of the sections is edited by a different reputable scholar. The writing is dry but accessible, and the illustrations (usually in color) are sharp and easy to read. A solid overview of both the history and the artifacts of Bronze Age Europe, this is recommended for academic libraries.AMary Morgan Smith, Northland P.L., Pittsburgh... A History of Denmark Knud J. Brief History of Denmark
Established in 1895 as a mill town by the Millar Brothers it operated until 1905 when the main timber reserves were cut out. After lobbying by a small group of residents remaining after the mill closures the town was purchased by the WA Government several years later. Fishing, farming, dairying, market gardening and orchards were at various times important local industries over the next century. From 1923/4 a scheme to introduce new settlers saw many immigrants from interstate and overseas arrive in the district. There were fifteen Group Settlements formed to clear and farm the land. In the late 1920's the original Millars rail line was rebuilt from the Hay River west to the town. The line new line was also extended to Nornalup where the Frankland River barred the way. It was envisioned that the line would ultimately continue to Pemberton and thus link Albany to Bunbury and then Perth. Today the town is the centre of thriving tourism and viticultural industries. It has also become a 'Tree change' town for many. One of the Historical Society's valuable photographs.

    Denmark : History
The Danes, a homogeneous Gothic-Germanic people, have inhabited Denmark since prehistoric times. Danish is the principal language. English is a required school subject, and fluency is high. A small German-speaking minority lives in southern Jutland; a mostly Inuit population inhabits Greenland; and the Faroe Islands have a Nordic population with its own language. Education is compulsory from ages seven to 16 and is free through the university level. Although religious freedom is guaranteed, the state-supported Evangelical Lutheran Church has a membership of 83% of the population. Several other Christian denominations, as well as other major religions, find adherents in Denmark. Islam is now the second-largest religion in Denmark, with the number of Muslims in Denmark estimated at slightly more than 4% of the population. During the Viking period (9th-11th centuries), Denmark was a great power based on the Jutland Peninsula, the Island of Zealand, and the southern part of what is now Sweden. In the early 11th century, King Canute united Denmark and England for almost 30 years.
