Gestational Diabetes Diabetes and Pregnancy Pregnancy is a very special time in any woman's life. It is a time of great joy but also of anxiety and questions such as: How will I cope with the pregnancy? With labor and delivery? Will my baby be OK? These questions may be even more troublesome for women with diabetes. Until fairly recently, pregnancy was risky for women with diabetes. Fortunately, today with good medical care and rigorous self-management, most women with diabetes have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby - provided that they pay close attention to glucose levels and work hard to keep them as close to normal as possible. On this site we will cover three aspects of diabetes and pregnancy:
  • The woman with diabetes who wants to get pregnant what you can do to help prepare your body for a healthy pregnancy
  • The woman with diabetes who is pregnant what you can do to help make your pregnancy smooth and your baby healthy
  • The woman who develops diabetes while pregnant, called gestational diabetes

    Diabetes mellitus
This information is not meant to be a substitute for veterinary care. Always follow the instructions provided by your veterinarian. Diabetes mellitus occurs when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin. Insulin is required for the body to efficiently use sugars, fats and proteins. Diabetes most commonly occurs in middle age to older dogs and cats, but occasionally occurs in young animals. When diabetes occurs in young animals, it is often genetic and may occur in related animals. Diabetes mellitus occurs more commonly in female dogs and in male cats. Certain conditions predispose a dog or cat to developing diabetes. Animals that are overweight or those with inflammation of the pancreas are predisposed to developing diabetes. Some drugs can interfere with insulin, leading to diabetes. Glucocorticoids, which are cortisone-type drugs, and hormones used for heat control are drugs that are most likely to cause diabetes. These are commonly used drugs and only a small percentage of animals receiving these drugs develop diabetes after long term use. The diagnosis of diabetes is made by finding a large increase in blood sugar and a large amount of sugar in the urine. Animals, especially cats, stressed by having a blood sample drawn, can have a temporary increase in blood sugar, but there is no sugar in the urine. A blood screen of other organs is obtained to look for changes in the liver, kidney and pancreas. A urine sample may be cultured to look for infection of the kidneys or bladder. Diabetic patients with ketoacidosis may have an elevation of waste products that are normally removed by the kidneys.

Susan Thorpe-Vargas, Ph.D., explains the types of diabetes insipidus, how the kidney functions, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and living with a dog with DI.

Back to Health Home Back to Endocrine Diabetes Insipidus: The Other Diabetes By Susan Thorpe-Vargas, Ph.D. A disease that many people have never heard of may be indirectly causing canine deaths. Not only is the disease dangerous in itself, but the primary symptoms include a behavior that could be perceived, or misinterpreted by owners, trainers and veterinarians, as purposefully destructive, and which figures prominently in the statistics of animals turned over to dog pounds and to veterinarians for euthanasia. The behavior we are referring to is the need for frequent urination. Seldom do owners and veterinarians search for potential medical problems that might contribute to house soiling behaviors. And, if they do, seldom are those searches for medical causes of inappropriate elimination practices complete. At least a quarter of all dogs euthanized or turned into shelters are given up because of behavior related issues. Near the top of the list of reasons for euthanasia and being turned into shelters is house soiling. Therefore, whenever an inappropriate elimination behavior develops, look first for an underlying medical condition before starting training or behavior modification exercises. While diabetes insipidus (DI) is less common than its better-known form, diabetes mellitus, it is probably an under-reported disease as it shares symptoms with other more common diseases including diabetes mellitus. The disease can also go unnoticed if the dog has a constant supply of water and has access to an outdoor run or a doggy door so that his excessive elimination needs do not require human intervention. Nonetheless, the disease is dangerous, and severe dehydration can occur very rapidly (4-6 hours). Leaving a DI dog unattended without water for several hours or overnight may result in severe hyperosmolality, coma, and death.

Diabetic Diet
Diabetic Diet for diabetics is simply a balanced healthy diet which is vital for diabetic treatment, however, a lot of people have the misconception that these diet consist only diabetic foods. The regulation of blood sugar in the non-diabetic is automatic, adjusting to whatever foods are eaten. But, for the diabetic, extra caution is needed to balance food intake with exercise, insulin injections and any other glucose altering activity (more information on List of food a diabetic can eat) . This helps diabetic patient to maintain the desirable weight and control their glucose level in their blood. It also helps to prevent diabetes patient from heart and blood vessel related diseases. Research shows that regardless of the makeup of the diet, eating just enough calories to maintain an ideal weight is the most effective dietary strategy to prevent the onset of diabetic. (more on Diabetic Cook Book) Recommendations of diabetic diet differ for person to person, based on their nutritional needs, lifestyle, and the action and timing of medications. The Washington YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program has Expanded!
A new partnership with the National YMCA Program, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the YMCA of Greater Seattle has expanded the number of Diabetes Prevention Programs (DPP) in Washington State. Coming in October seven YMCA's will now offer the evidenced-based 16-week lifestyle intervention program to people with pre-diabetes to delay progression of diagnosed diabetes. The YMCA of Greater Seattle was chosen as one of 11 demonstration sites for a national roll out of the Diabetes Prevention Program at YMCAs across the country! In addition to the 16-week curriculum there will be a sophisticated reporting system to track outcomes data. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for Washington!
