Welcome to Lovebytes Lovebytes is a cultural festival for the digital age. A season of extraordinary events taking place at some of Sheffield's landmark venues and public spaces.
The climax to our 2010 festival programme is Pocket Universe a feast of digital activity for all the family at the Winter Garden and Millennium Gallery on the 13 June. Our theme for 2010 is 'digital craft'; looking at creative digital culture in the context of traditional art and craft. Exhibitions include Code:Craft at the Museums Sheffield:Millennium Gallery which forms the hub for a programme of special events between January and June. The exhibition opened on the 12th of February as part of Sonic Materialities , an evening of spectacular sound and light installations in the Winter Garden and the Millennium Gallery.
Running alongside our main exhibitions are a wide range of workshops and creative technology projects which explore the processes involved in creating digital and interactive art. For the last few months we have been working with over 1,000 Sheffield school children making an interactive installation called

digital art
Home Library Miscellaneous Columbia Encyclopedia digital art, contemporary art in which computer technology is used in a wide variety of ways to make distinctive works. Digital art was pioneered in the 1970s but only came into its own as a viable art form with the widespread availability of computers, appropriate software, video equipment, sound mixers, and digital cameras toward the end of the 20th cent. and the subsequent development of increasingly sophisticated digital tools. A boundary-shattering style, digital art can combine and transform such elements as painting, filmmaking, photography, digital design, video, installation art, sculpture, animation, and sound. Presented on video screens, digital works may be created of abstract or figurative forms in the artists' choice of millions of shades of color, and may be manipulated so that the images appear, combine, morph, and/or disappear. Digital art also includes works, many of them interactive, made to be viewed on the World Wide Web . Sculpture, too, can be a digital art as a result of rapid prototyping, a technique that "prints out" three-dimensional forms from computer-designed models. Contemporary digital works range from the shimmering and transforming video paintings of Jeremy Blake to the computer-modified imagery of Carl Fudge's screenprints, the shifting geometric panels of John F. Simon, Jr., and the participatory audiovisual worlds of Janet Cardiff. Among the many other artists involved in the movement, each with his or her own approach to the seemingly infinite possibilities of digital art, are Jim Campbell, Leah Gilliam, Robert Lazzarini, Jim O'Rourke, Paul Pfeiffer, Marina Rosenfeld, Elliott Sharp, Diana Thater, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Adrianne Wortzel.

Modern technology has changed many things in our lives, including the way we communicate, travel and entertain ourselves. Electronic instruments and computer simulations have revolutionised science. Mathematics, one of the purest forms of human logic and reasoning, has also been changed by computer approaches. Even art has been undergoing a deep upheaval in the way it is created and appreciated, using the fast processing and graphical output of computers. The boundary between artist, computer programmer, and mathematician is becoming ever more blurred. In this article, Lewis Dartnell leads us through some examples of this exciting new wave of digital art.
New possibilities
Art was once restricted to static creations, such as an oil painting, sculpture or photograph, produced by the artist and then passively regarded by the viewer. Nowadays, however, computer-based visual art allows improved dynamic forms — art that develops or evolves before our eyes. The "artist" may have no more idea of what will finally emerge than anyone else. An even more exciting possibility in computer-aided installations is interactivity — digital art that responds to the viewer's actions, for example through input from movements of the computer mouse, or perhaps even by tracking the motion of different parts of the body. The crucial thing here is that dynamic digital art is not so much about the
