Digital Libraries basically store materials in electronic format and manipulate large collections of those materials effectively. Research into digital libraries is research into network information systems, concentrating on how to develop the necessary infrastructure to effectively mass-manipulate the information on the Net.. The key technological issues are how to search and display desired selections from and across large collections. Introduction
The Digital Libraries Initiative (DLI) was the result of a community-based process which began in the late 1980s with informal discussions between researchers and agency program managers. These discussions progressed to planning workshops designed to develop research values and agendas and culminated in the National Science Foundation (NSF)/Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)/National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Research in Digital Libraries Initiative announced in late 1993. With the selection and funding of the six DLI projects [ http://www.cise.nsf.gov/iis/dli_home.html ], interest and activities related to digital libraries accelerated rapidly. The six DLI projects became highly visible and influential efforts, and grew in scope, participation and influence. NSF and DARPA funded additional workshops as part of the DLI to develop consensus on specific digital libraries topical areas and boundaries, to bring together researchers to stimulate cross-disciplinary interaction, and to ponder together how best to adapt to a rapidly changing global information environment. By now, researchers and practitioners from many disciplines have been drawn into digital libraries research and related activities, from subject domains reaching far beyond the sciences into the arts and humanities.

    Digital Services Project
    Overview
The Digital Services Project is a long-term initiative of the Library begun in 1998 as a strategy for ensuring effective management of its digital collections and their preservation for future access as technologies change. The aim of the project is to:
    • Provide the infrastructure for long-term management of digital material in the Library's collection through provision of hardware and software systems supporting integrated collection management in a digital environment.
The Library defines digital services to mean services exploiting digital technologies to provide access to traditional documentary resources and to ensure the long-term preservation of, and access to, documents available only in digital form.
    Summary of achievements
As a first deliverable, a Systems Architecture was developed that has been tested and modified over time to provide a framework for a wide set of IT development and procurement activities. This framework embraces all of the key library processes of selection, acquisition, storage, resource discovery, delivery, access control and preservation. It also covers both digitised and born-digital information resources.

    http://digital.libraries.ou.edu/
The University of Oklahoma has digitized the title pages of 8,300 books in the History of Science Collections. Many of these books are rare and/or fragile. The purpose of the digitization project was to offer author/title access to all the items in the History of Science Collections, a small portion of which had not yet been cataloged. It also allows scholars the opportunity to study printer’s devices, author’s autographs and other provenance which occur on these title pages.
The University of Oklahoma, founded in 1890, has a rich history which has been recorded in University publications and official documents through the years. Some of these documents have been digitized and are now available online. Sooner Magazine (1928-present) and minutes for the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma (1893-present) are excellent resources for OU enthusiasts to learn more about the history of this great university. Also included on this site are items from the OU Archives, historical OU photographs, exhibits, and a bibliography for further reading on OU history.
Begun in 1927 by OU history professor Edward Everett Dale, the Western History Collections gathers and preserves rare research materials for scholars in anthropology, Native American studies, Oklahoma history, and the history of the American West. The most well-known of its resources is the Photographic Archives, which holds over 800,000 prints and negatives. The collection has an emphasis on the American Southwest and West for the period 1870-1940, and features images of American Indians, Oklahoma's land runs and lotteries, the settlement and development of Oklahoma towns, western outlaws and lawmen, the cattle trade, agriculture, the petroleum industry, and related socioeconomic themes of the western United States.

This paper examines file sharing within corporations that use wide-area, distributed file systems. The applications and user interactions strongly suggest that the addition of services typically associated with digital libraries will improve collaboration. Among these services are content-based file location, strongly typed objects, representation of complex relationships between documents, and extrinsic metadata. When these services are added to wide-area file systems, application integration improves significantly.
    1.0 Introduction
Wide-area file systems provide a rich infrastructure for sharing large collections of files among individuals and groups within and between organizations. The simplicity of the file system interface encourages collaboration; a universally accessible file system removes the problem of passing files between collaborators. Features of the underlying technology such as caching, replication, and location transparency ensure optimal performance and high availability. Access controls protect sensitive information from unacceptable use. Backups and hierarchical storage schemes provide long-term archival of files. There are many examples of successful collaborations based on wide-area file systems [ ]. However, the ubiquitous storage services offered by the file system do not address information management problems that arise during collaboration. For example, the file system provides only primitive support for locating files, expressing relationships between files, and identifying the operations that can be applied to a file. The federated nature of wide-area file systems often exacerbates problems of scale, and diversity of file format and use.
