edit Abstract
Information and Communication Technology has revolutionized the concept of libraries. Each and every library is slowly getting digitized. A 'digital library' comprises digital collections, services and infrastructure to support lifelong learning, research, scholarly communication as well as preservation and conservation of our recorded knowledge. It is also a process of democratization of information. This article will discuss the factors that will necessitate the traditional libraries to get digitized, as well as the definition, need, advantages and disadvantages of digital libraries, the requirement for building a digital library etc. The emphasis is also put to describe the role of librarian in the new environment!
edit Introduction
The term Digital Library has a variety of potential meanings, ranging from a digitized collection of material that one might find in a traditional library through to the collection of all digital information along with the services that make that information useful to all possible users. As there are many definitions of a “digital library,” terms such as “electronic library” and “virtual library” are often used synonymously. A digital library is nothing but a large database for the people who are working on hypertext environment. It is an environment, which supports the full life cycle of creation, storage, preservation, dissemination and use of data, information and knowledge.

Digital Libraries
The term "digital library" was coined relatively recently and is used to describe distributed access to collections of digital information. The terms "electronic library" and "virtual library" are sometimes also used. However, there is still considerable debate about the definition of a digital library because the term may mean different things to different groups. For example, sometimes it is used to refer to the content or collection of materials ("a digital library of historic photographs"), whereas at other times it refers to the institution or service provided ("the digital library provided electronic reference"). A unique characteristic of a digital library is that it is a collection of material organized for access by the users of the electronic documents. The material is in digital form and may consist of or incorporate various media, such as photographs, video, sound recordings, as well as text and page images. Access is provided through search engines that search the actual text of the materials, or more formal cataloging such as Library of Congress Classification or Subject Headings. Bibliographic and descriptive information about the contents is usually referred to as

We seek to aid designers of digital library interfaces and web sites in creating comprehensible, predictable and controllable environments for their users. Our work on interactive exploration of digital materials goes back to the early research on Hypertext in 1983 with the development of HyperTies. In our more recent projects we promote visual previews and overviews to allow users to rapidly discriminate objects of interest from those not of interest, and to more fully understand the scope and nature of a digital library.
Current Projects

About ICADS
Digital libraries
A digital library is defined by Clifford Lynch ( Chapter One of the CNI White Paper on Networked Information Discovery and Retrieval ) as an "electronic information access system that offers the user a coherent view of an organized, selected, and managed body of information". Paul Duguid ( Report of the Santa Fe Planning Workshop on Distributed Knowledge Work Environments ) describes a digital library as "an environment to bring together collections, services, and people in support of the full life cycle of creation, dissemination, use, and preservation of data, information and knowledge". Digital library research encompasses a broad range of issues associated with preserving access to digital information. For example, there are technological issues relating to: systems for resource discovery and information retrieval; the use of technical standards ; interoperability with other systems; and methods of storage and preservation. Legal issues such as intellectual property rights and licensing mean that consideration needs to be given to methods of controlling access and ensuring authenticity of information.

Aims and audience
Digital library research brings together a number of disciplines and practitioner communities, creating a stimulating environment for debate and an opportunity for establishing collaboration. ECDL provides a forum for the exchange of ideas between scientific disciplines and fosters joint initiatives with application communities. Involvement of researchers and practitioners from computing and information science disciplines is well established at ECDL. Increasingly these disciplines are engaging in discussion and co-operation with other groups concerned with knowledge management. ECDL 2004 encourages involvement from a wide range of disciplines and looks forward to continuing contributions from usability experts, educationalists, developers of eLearning systems, and from those working within the eScience and GRID communities. The continued success of ECDL rests on the exchange of ideas and experience between these groups.
