Easier - Dinosaurs are large reptiles that lived millions of years ago. There were many different dinosaurs. Dinosaurs came in many different sizes and shapes. They also lived differently and in different places. Some were meat-eaters, others ate only plants. Some dinosaurs were enormous, up to 150 feet long and weighing more than 77 metric tons. Others were much smaller. Harder - The name dinosaur comes from the term Dinosauria , which means 'terrible lizards.' However dinosaurs were only distantly related to lizards. Dinosaur is the name of a prehistoric reptile group that first appeared on the earth about 230 million years ago. They lived in nearly all natural settings, from open plains to forests to the edges of swamps, lakes, and oceans. Then about 65 million years ago, the dinosaurs died out. They were not 'rediscovered' by man until the early nineteenth century, when their fossil remains were first recognized.

    1. Dinosaurs walked the earth for over 165 million years.
    2. They lived during a period of time known as the Mesozoic Era, or Age of Reptiles… at the end of the Cretaceous Period they became extinct… that was 65 million years ago… during this time there was a great deal of volcanic activity and many earthquakes… many people believe that dinosaurs became extinct because an asteroid hit the earth changing the climate dramatically… it is believed that dinosaurs couldn't adapt to these changes.
    3. The word dinosaur means terrifying lizard… the name was invented by Sir Richard Owen in 1842.
    4. The oldest known dinosaur is Eoraptor, a meat-eater that lived 228 million years ago.
    5. Most dinosaurs hatch from eggs, and they could not fly or live in water.
    6. Dinosaurs are classified as reptiles… they are divided into two groups based on the structure of the hip… one group has lizard-like hips and the other group has bird-like hips.
    7. Most paleontologists, scientists that study dinosaurs, believe that birds are the only surviving dinosaurs… so dinosaurs aren't really extinct because their descendents are still living.

Mongolian Dinosaurs at PIN
Some of the most popular and dramatic exhibits in the Paleontological Institute are their dinosaurs. The PIN has been collecting Dinosaurs from the Cretaceous of Mongolia for years as part of a joint project with the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. The late Cretaceous of Mongolia is famous for its dinosaurs and small mammals. The deposits there were first explored by parties from the American Museum of Natural History in the 1920's. Many important discoveries were made there, including the first actual evidence of egg laying and nesting behaviour in dinosaurs. Protoceratops , an ornithischian dinosaur , was found there along with nests of eggs that contained preserved embryos. At the time these photos were taken (early 1990s), many of the Mongolian dinosaurs from the PIN were part of a traveling exhibit to Australia and Japan. They still had two skeletons of Tarbosaurus (left), a theropod dinosaur related to Tyrannosaurus rex . These are from the Upper Cretaceous Tsagan-Oola Formation, and are about 70 million years old. In front of the tarbosaurs is the skull of Saurolophus angustifrons , also from the Upper Cretaceous of Mongolia. It is an herbivorous

In response to overwhelming (?) paleontological interest, D.I.G . is pleased to present an exhaustive, if not exhausting, list of the official fossil and/or dino of each and every state in the good ol' US of A. (except for the ones that we couldn't find out yet). And, hey, if you are the governor of a state without an official dino, get on the stick, okay? We finally have all 50 states so far! Two states (Washington and Hawaii) don't have any dino fossils at all! Poor Washington. Hawaii at least has coconuts. So without further ado... here it is! Oh, if you can fill in any of the blanks, please let us know!
