In the past, anatomization of the body of a convicted person was sometimes ordered as part of the punishment. It happened in 1805 in Massachusetts to James Halligan and Dominic Daley after their public hanging . The bodies were taken to the local slaughterhouse. Their remains were denied a burial.

This page uses video to show people the dissection of a fetal pig and of a bullfrog.
To view these videos you'll need a plug-in called VIVO-active.
After you have the viewer correctly installed on you computer you can watch the dissections. Note to all text viewers, you will not be able to watch the dissection but you will be able to read the instructions. Also any one with reading disabilities, visual impairements or something of that nature you can listen to the videos and have a pretty good understanding of what is going on.
All videos were created by the Visual Dissecting Team consisting of (coaches) John Edgecombe, Mark Hopper and (students) Ian Barton, Ryan Hindle.

M y name is Brian S. Tinsley and I am an aortic dissection survivor. The purpose of this website is to provide other aortic dissection patients with a single source of information that they can hopefully find useful. When I got out of the hospital, I could find zero positive information about living with this prognoses. Here you will find over personal stories of folks who have had aortic dissection as well as a place to get help. If you have an aortic dissection story, please submit it here .  I have hooked up with many top doctors and can get you information to help! This site covers all topics: Dissecting Aortic Aneurysm, Aortic Dissection Symptom, Aortic Dissection Videos, Aortic Dissection and Complications, Ascending Aortic Dissection,Type A Aortic Dissections,Type B Aortic Aneurysm, Dissected Aorta, Causes of Chest Pain, Aortic Rupture, John Ritter.
Everything I read seemed to just lead to how many deaths had occurred and I was so scared to read articles that had to do with aortic dissections. However, the best defense is to have the knowledge and information to cope with this and to be able to help others as well. That’s my goal! I want to help people understand more about this growing problem and what can be done to help. I will try my best to keep this site up to date and answer any questions you might have. I am merely a layman and not a doctor. I have made connections with some great folks very familiar with this issue and feel great about spreading the knowledge. Whether you have had a

Virtual Frog Dissection Kit
This award-winning interactive program is part of the "Whole Frog" project . You can interactively dissect a (digitized) frog named Fluffy, and play the Virtual Frog Builder Game. The interactive Web pages are available in a number of languages Click on the frog to dive into the kit. Help and additional information available include a tutorial , an overview of how the system works, a paper that was presented at WWW '94, and a paper that was published in COMPCON '95. For some other interesting frog and biology-related pages, see Also of Interest Frog statistics , including how many times it has been accessed in different languages. We welcome your suggestions and comments . Comments from teachers and students are especially welcome. Please note, however, that we are computer scientists, not biologists. We will not be able to help you with your homework (see biology-related information for help). Also, we don't know of any animals other than the frog that have a computer-graphics based virtual dissection page. We get frequent requests for this information. If someone has done such a page for a fetal pig, cat, etc., we'd be interested in hearing about it. The Center for Science and Engineering Education contains links to other educational Web sites at Berkeley Lab.

Photographs of a Rite of Passage in American Medicine 1880 - 1930
by John Harley Warner and James M. Edmonson How We Die
"What a spectacular book! Warner and Edmonson have amassed an extraordinary array of old dissecting-room photographs. Together, the authors have created a landmark book in the history of dissection in America."
Death, Dissection and the Destitute Featuring 138 rare, historic photographs, Dissection is a "landmark book" (Ruth Richardson) that reveals a startling piece of American history, the rite of passage into the mysteries of medicine captured in photography.
From the advent of photography in the 19th century and into the 20th century, medical students, often in secrecy, took photographs of themselves with the cadavers that they dissected: their first patients. The photographs were made in a variety of forms, from proud class portraits to staged dark-humor scenes, from personal documentation to images reproduced on postcards sent in the mail. Poignant, strange, disturbing, and humorous, they are all compelling.
These photographs were made at a time when Victorian societal taboos against intimate knowledge of the human body were uneasily set aside for medical students in pursuit of knowledge that could be gained only in the dissecting room.

"The brute animals have all the same sensations of pain as human beings, and consequently endure as much pain when their body is hurt; but in their case the cruelty of torment is greater, because they have no mind to bear them up against their sufferings, and no hope to look forward to when enduring the last extreme pain..." ~ Thomas Chalmers, Scottish Religious Leader (b. 1780, d. 1847)
Cat Dissection in America
1. How many cats are used for dissection each year?
More than 100,000 cats are dissected in classrooms across the country annually.
2. Who dissects cats? Hundreds of thousands of young adults in junior and senior high schools and colleges dissect cats in their Advanced Placement Biology, Anatomy and Physiology courses every year. This continues, even though statistics show that out of every 1,000 students entering the fifth grade, only 220 will graduate from college and only 40 will obtain science degrees. Of those 40, very few will enter a field where dissection experience is even remotely related. But almost all of these 1,000 students will dissect an animal before they leave high school. For students in junior high, high school and college, the dissection of a once-living being is not only unethical but unnecessary!

Classroom Activities Earthworm Dissection Guide On the Cutting Edge: Digging into Earthworms Earthworms are ideal specimens to use for teaching basic anatomy and investigating simple organ systems. They also provide an economical and convenient opportunity for students to practice their dissection techniques before progressing to more complex specimens such as frogs or pigs. Use the following procedure and your students will be “digging into earthworms” in no time.
Earthworm dissection procedure
  • Observe the external anatomy of the earthworm. Earthworms are annelids, or segmented worms that have bodies made up of a series of ringlike segments. The earthworm has no head and no appendages, but does possess external characteristics to study. First, identify the anterior and posterior ends. The anterior end is somewhat larger than the posterior. Pin the earthworm to the dissecting pan and count and record the number of segments. There may be as many as 100. Observe each segment closely. Note the tiny bristles on the ventral surface. These setae help the worm move through soil.
