University of Washington Dissection Alternatives View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: Directors of the Univ. of WA Zoology and Biology Departments We, the undersigned, demand that the University of Washington Zoology and Biology Departments create an official amendment, to their department policies' statements and rules, requiring all classes, in which lab work involving the use of living or dead nonhuman animals is required, be required to include in the syllabi for the classes an animal-free alternative for all students who are opposed to using nonhuman animals for any reason. The amendment will require all professors to offer alternatives that will not adversely effect the grade or success of the students who choose an alternative to nonhuman animal use. The amendment will also require all professors to openly offer said alternative in written form via the class syllabi as well as oral form prior to the onset of any lab exercise in which nonhuman animals will be used. Let it be so. Sincerely

Why Would You Perform a Necropsy?
The necropsy (post-mortem dissection) of poultry is a procedure that can be utilized by the veterinarian, the manager, or the grower to find reasons for the bird's death. Using a knife or scissors, a person can perform a basic necropsy to obtain diagnostic information, samples for further laboratory testing, or to ensure quality control of a flock. If you see a rise in mortality (death rates) or a rise in morbidity (number of ill birds), the necropsy can provide you with more information about the disease, perhaps even a diagnosis. Your veterinarian and diagnostic lab can supply you with additional information on sampling techniques and shipping methods for diagnostic testing.
Getting Started
While walking through a house, a recently dead or currently ill bird can be chosen for a necropsy. Birds that have been dead for more than a few hours are not recommended for diagnostic specimens since the natural decomposition process will create changes that may be confused with true pathological lesions.

Profile: Swedish Black/Death Metal band.
Jon Nödveidt (guitars, vocals) and Peter Palmdahl (bass) used to play in a Thrash band known as Siren's Yell. When the group disbanded in 1989, the two members joined forces with Ole Öhman and formed Dissection. Their debut EP, "Into Infinite Obscurity" was released in 1991 but their first full length, "The Somberlain" was only released in 1993. Between the releases the band was joined by John Zweetslot on guitar. The album allowed the band gain popularity in the underground and above, also thanks to the connection between the members and infamous Mayhem (the album was dedicated to Euronymous).
John Zweetslot was eventually kicked out due to lazyness in 1994 and was replaced by Johan Norman and the band recorded their second fullenght album titled "Storm Of The Light's Bane" which was released on Nuclear blast and is cosidered one of the best albums in the genre. Ole Öhman got kicked out of the band soon after the release and the band was replaced by Tobias Kjellgren and the band toured the world. In 1997 all of the members, except Jon, either quit the band or was kicked out and Jon started to put together a new line-up. Following that mishappening, Jon Nödveidt was arrested for killing a 37-year old homosexual and Dissection was no more....or, at least, that's what they made their fans believe for a while.
"The Past Is Alive" was released following the arrest as a collection of older recordings. "Storm Of The Light's Bane" and "Where Dead Angels Lie" were re-released into one big album in 2002 with "Storm Of The Light's Bane/Where Dead Angels Lie".

    About Animalearn

    Dissection
Every year, millions of animals are dissected or vivisected in schools and universities. It is estimated that 170 animal species or more are used for dissection and vivisection. Cats, frogs, fetal pigs, grasshoppers, mink, earthworms, rats, mice, dogs, pigeons, and turtles are just some of the many species used.
While most of the animals used in schools and universities are purchased as dead specimens, many are subjected to painful and lethal procedures while still alive. Animals are also obtained as 'byproducts' of extremely cruel industries. For instance, slaughterhouses provide fetal pigs and fur farms sell skinned mink, foxes, and rabbits. Most of these animals led deprived lives and standards at such facilities are sometimes not enforced.
    Moving Toward Alternatives
Over the past several decades, educators have begun to question the value of the use of animals. Now, teachers and professors recognize that students can learn equally as well and often better through the use of modern technology. The majority of

Dissection
Each year in the U.S., an estimated 20 million animals are used in cruel, outdated teaching exercises. Roughly half of them are used for classroom dissections. Frogs are the most commonly dissected animals below the university level. Other species include cats, mice, rats, worms, squid, rabbits, fetal pigs, and fish. The animals may come from breeding facilities that cater to businesses that use animals in experiments; they could be abandoned animal companions who have been sold by an animal shelter to biological supply companies ; or they may have been caught in the wild. For example, millions of frogs are captured in their natural habitats every year and the U.S. Department of the Interior has even stated that amphibian population declines are due in part to the use of amphibians in dissection. Nearly every published comparative study in the science education literature has concluded that non-animal methods, like computer software, teach anatomy and complex biological processes as well as, or better than, animal-based lessons. In fact, in 2008, the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) amended its official position statement on animal dissection to approve and encourage the use of non-animal alternatives.

Aortic dissection
Aortic dissection is a potentially life-threatening condition in which there is bleeding into and along the wall of the aorta, the major artery carrying blood out of the heart.
Causes
When it leaves the heart, the aorta first moves up through the chest toward the head (the ascending aorta). It then bends or arches, and finally moves down through the chest and abdomen (the descending aorta). Aortic dissection most often occurs because of a tear or damage to the inner wall of the aorta. This usually occurs in the thoracic (chest) portion of the artery, but may also occur in the abdominal portion. An aortic dissection is classified as type A or B depending on where it begins and ends.
  • Type A begins in the first (ascending) part of the aorta. Type B begins in the descending part of the aorta.
When a tear occurs, it creates two channels: One in which blood continues to travel and another where blood remains still. As the aortic dissection grows bigger, the channel with nontraveling blood can get bigger and push on other branches of the aorta. An aortic dissection may also involve abnormal widening or ballooning of the aorta ( aneurysm The exact cause is unknown, but risks include

black metal heavy metal review of The Somberlain Storm of the Light's Bane by dissection, Swedish melodic death metal/black metal/heavy metal band.

Dissection
Merging the 1970s style of melodic rock that Iron Maiden popularized and developed with a newer, darker and more simplistic style of metal derived from the extremes of black and death metal. Although distinctive in aesthetic it is structured like death metal and provides a good classic metal listening experience. Dissection - The Somberlain
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane

The Somberlain No Fashion Production: Clear, slightly muddied but irrelevant as it brings twists to melodic timbre. Review: A death metal band playing heavy metal in the hazy aura of black metal technique, creates an interesting and very listenable allow that despite lacking the flow and inscrutability of hardcore black metal creates an atmosphere specific to the genre. An influence from Necrophobic, perhaps in the sweeping riffs which move from broad intervals through a melodic bridge to binary variation, and songs which move from there into permutations of central riffs while keeping an ear for melody and the harmonic sublime. Similar to bands such as At the Gates or Sentenced Dissection integrate heavy metal melodic playing with smooth and lengthy black metal riffs, allowing harmonic space to be saturated by osmosis in preparation for thematic narrative and conclusion. Sonorous and often gentle, this album embraces a different aesthetic from black metal in its wavelike complement and recursion, with an emphasis on motion and structure in a style consistent from speed metal through the renaissance of death metal.
