U. of Illinois Adopts Dissection-Alternatives Policy
March 7, 2005: Virgina Commonwealth University just passed a student-choice policy that gives students with ethical or religious objections to dissection the opportunity to earn either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree without participating in academic exercises they find objectionable! Read the full story here . For more information about this important victory, you can contact Nicole Green (Assistant Director of Education, Animalearn) at (215)887-0816, or April Kung (the Virginia Commonwealth University Student who spearheaded the campaign) at (804)358-2829. Congratulations!
February 3, 2005: While we do not have a list of every class using animals, it appears that at least some classes in the timetable now indicate both whether or not a course includes dissection and whether or not alternatives are available. For example, Biology of Reproduction has alternatives available for all dissection requirements. It appears that once the emotions died down from the original controversy, professors and department heads were more willing to make some accomodations quietly!
In other news, April Kung at Virginia Commonwealth University is working on a student chocie policy at her school. We've added a link to the

I Hate Pop and other Relevant Ramblings
I hate pop. I hate the stars, the composers, the writers but most of the entire concept itself. Pop is manufactured for the not so discerning ear and not quite intellectual mind and every time I hear even one beat I shudder. Shudder, for I fear each stray note will somehow infest in my mind and slowly eat me away.
But enough of that, pop music sucks as does everyone who listens to it so if you like pop you won't really like my site. Check back in a few days, I'm just completing a photos page with all your hated popstars doing their thing, Photo pages and are complete check them out. This site is a member of WebRing. u=10062866"

... Resources Dissection is an outdated practice that is cruel, costly, requires toxic chemicals, often involves poaching and stealing animals, and is not necessary to successfully learn biology, physiology or anatomy. So why does dissection continue to outrank its many compassionate counterparts in the classroom? Because most teachers do not present dissection as a choice and rarely offer students a form for raising questions of ethics and scientific value in relation to dissection. Therefore, presenting students with the facts and choices about dissection is essential if they are to successfully oppose dissection in favor of humane and accurate alternatives. Students must understand their rights as human beings first, and as students second. Laws, regulations and school requirements do not necessarily consider the ethical convictions of students; consequently, it is a student's fundamental right-even duty-to object to behaviors and acts that are in opposition to his or her sense of moral conduct.

This award-winning interactive program is part of the "Whole Frog" project . You can interactively dissect a (digitized) frog named Fluffy, and play the Virtual Frog Builder Game. The interactive Web pages are available in a number of languages Click on the frog to dive into the kit. Help and additional information available include a tutorial , an overview of how the system works, a paper that was presented at WWW '94, and a paper that was published in COMPCON '95. For some other interesting frog and biology-related pages, see Also of Interest Frog statistics , including how many times it has been accessed in different languages. We welcome your suggestions and comments . Comments from teachers and students are especially welcome. Please note, however, that we are computer scientists, not biologists. We will not be able to help you with your homework (see biology-related information for help). Also, we don't know of any animals other than the frog that have a computer-graphics based virtual dissection page. We get frequent requests for this information. If someone has done such a page for a fetal pig, cat, etc., we'd be interested in hearing about it. WHOLE FROG PROJECT
Introduction
The DSD "Whole Frog" project is intended to introduce the concepts of modern, computer based 3D visualization, and at the same time to demonstrate the power of whole body, 3D imaging of anatomy as a curriculum tool. The goal of the Whole Frog Project is to provide high school biology classes the ability to explore the anatomy of a frog by using data from high resolution MRI imaging and from mechanical sectioning, together with 3D surface and volume rendering software to visualize the anatomical structures of the intact animal. Ultimately we intend to be able to "enter the heart and fly down blood vessels, poking our head out at any point to see the structure of the surrounding anatomy". A summary of this may be found in:

Golomb Dissection, 1996
For Solomon Golomb, mathematician and inventor of pentaminoes . Created for a presentation to MathCounts, a national junior high school mathematics competition, May 10, 1996.
If two squares side by side is a "domino", then n squares joined side by side to make a shape is a "polyomino", an idea invented by mathematician Solomon Golomb of USC. There are two distinct "trominoes" (three squares): a straight line and an L. There are five distinct "tetraminoes" (four squares), popularized in the computer game Tetris, which was inspired by Golomb's polyominoes.
Shown above are the twelve distinct pentaminoes shapes made of five squares. There are dozens of games you can play with pentaminoes, like trying to arrange them into a 5 by 12 rectangle, 6 by 10 rectangle, or 3 by 4 by 5 solid. A two-person pentamino game was filmed for the movie 2001, but was cut in favor of chess. 2001 author Arthur C. Clarke later incorporated pentaminoes in his novel The Fountains of Paradise.

Applications and related fields
Questions regarding the underlying spaces (and algebraic invariants) are included on the topology pages. Classic questions regarding polygons and regular solids are included on the geometry pages. There is a separate section on constructibility of polygons (and other things) with ruler and compass Many of these questions are related to themes arising in geometric visualization, a topic covered reasonably well on the net. In particular, the newsgroup comp.graphics.algorithms considers such themes from time to time. Some such topics are here, others on the page for computational geometry

Introduction to aortic dissection
The aorta is the large blood vessel that leads from the heart and carries blood to the rest of the body. The aorta originates at the aortic valve at the outlet of the left ventricle of the heart. It ascends in the chest to an arch where blood vessels branch off to supply blood flow to the arms and head. It then begins to descend through the chest and into the abdomen, where it splits into two iliac arteries that provide blood flow to the legs. Along its descent, more small arteries branch out to supply blood to the stomach, intestine, colon, kidneys, and the spinal cord.

Scriptural Prelude
When Jesus saw the crowds he went up on the mountainside.
After he had sat down his disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them:
How blest are the poor in spirit: the reign of God is theirs.
Blest too are the sorrowing; they shall be consoled.
Blest are the lowly; they shall inherit the land.
Blest are they who hunger and thirst for holiness;
they shall have their fill.
Blest are they who show mercy; mercy shall be theirs. Blest are the single-hearted for they shall see God. Blest too are the peacemakers; they shall be called children of God. Blest are those persecuted for holiness' sake; the reign of God is theirs. Blest are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of slander against you because of me.

Created by: Jody Hildreth
Revised: May 05, 2006 Welcome to the KidWings website!

This site was designed to teach young and old about the wonders of birds. The most exciting part of the site is the Virtual Owl Pellet Dissection. Many interactive activities await you. Click on a link from the left side of the screen to get started. Look what's new!
NEW Beta Version: Virtual Owl Pellet Dissection v.4
This newest version is being released early with the hope of receiving your input before it is finalized. Here are the major changes:
  • When students complete the owl pellet dissection, a certificate appears which they can type their name in and print off
  • Bones are dropped onto the rodent skeleton with the option of having the bone labels on or off (this can be changed during the dissection, too).
  • Interesting avian facts appear with every correctly placed bone (only a few appear now, many more with finalized version)
  • Progress bar shows how many bones need to be placed correctly
  • When fur is clicked it automatically moves to a corner of the screen and can't be moved again. This makes it easier for the user.
