Now neither time nor distance need hinder you from taking courses at Hartford Seminary. Students can take Masters level courses for credit or audit just like the face-to-face classes at the Seminary. Recent changes in our accreditation policies mean that Hartford Seminary MA students can now have up half their courses toward their degree requirements as distance education courses. The Seminary has recently begun an online religious studies certificate program - essentially allowing a student to take all 18 credits of that certificate degree - approximately 6 courses - online. Then, after this graduate certificate, it is often possible to transfer all those credits into a MA program here, the rest of which would have to be done in face-to-face coursework. Distance Education and the Changing Role of the Library Media Specialist by Schamber, Linda This article is based on "Distance Education and the Changing Role of the Library Media Specialist," by Michael A. Burke. When classes are conducted via communications media with little face-to-face contact between teachers and students, as is the case in distance education, problems are inevitable. Distance education is so depersonalized and distance education courses so tightly structured that students can feel stifled and lose motivation. Library media specialists can help by taking a proactive role in distance education efforts, from instructional design to media resource development to inservice training for staff. NEED FOR CHANGE Demographic and economic trends point to major problems for public education in the coming decade. Foremost among these trends is the inverse relationship between increasing K-12 enrollments and declining workforces. At the same time that many members of the currently aging workforce will be retiring, school systems will be hard pressed to hire replacements due to a decrease in eligible college graduates. These graduates, especially women, will also have a variety of other career options. Thus fewer teachers will be available to teach fewer courses, a situation that is likely to affect special populations of students most. These populations include an increasing proportion of black and Hispanic students, and students in small and rural schools. Finally, and most importantly, public education is experiencing a funding crisis exacerbated by a general lack of electorate and federal support for public education among a graying national population.

The U.S. Department of Education and Student Financial Aid for Distance Education: An Update. ERIC Digest.
Since the mid-1990s, there has been a boom in the number of U.S. colleges and universities providing courses and degree programs via distance educationeducation or training courses delivered to off-campus locations via audio, live or prerecorded video, or computer technologies, including both synchronous and asynchronous instruction (Lewis, Snow, Farris, and Levin, 1999, pp. vi, 2). Between 1995 and 1998, enrollments in distance education classes more than doubled, reaching 1,632, 350, and this rapid growth is expected to continue (U.S. Dept. of Education, 2001, June 25). This virtual explosion in distance education has piqued the interest of parents, students, distance education providers, and federal officials in the rules governing the U.S. Department of Education's distribution of federal student financial aid for distance learning. Under the current federal student aid programs (Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended), the bulk of student aid is awarded to a college or university's resident students; there are a number of statutory and regulatory provisions that limit the eligibility of distance education students to receive financial assistance (U.S. Dept. of Education, 1999, June 25).
