Information and resources to help make divorce more humane and responsible. Free ebook written by divorce professionals, and statistics and information on children, family law, and conflict resolution.

Traditional thinking about divorce in America used to be of the all-or-nothing kind: - either you are married (in which case you are expected to cooperate with each other), - or you're divorced (in which case you're supposed to be so at odds with each other that you can't possibly cooperate, even on something that is as important to both of you as raising your children). In contrast, the "responsible divorce" is about balance. You recognize that there are conflicting needs, and you do your best to balance them: - Quite obviously, there is a need for separation; divorced people cannot continue to act as a married couple; you need to rebuild your lives as separate individuals. - On the other hand, both of you have some common goals. At the very least, these common goals include making the divorce more gentle on yourselves, keeping your own dignity, saving the money that could easily be wasted in a high-conflict divorce... When there are children involved, there is even more of a common goal: continuing to parent your children. You divorce each other and lead separate lives, but you remain parents of the same children. It works best for the children when the parents find a way to cooperate with each other, starting with the divorce process itself.

State Divorce Laws
Divorce (or Dissolution of Marriage) is primarily governed by state specific divorce laws. This means that what may be applicable in one state may not be in the next, so it is imperative that you focus on the divorce laws for the state in which you are filing. You will find that the laws may be very similar from on state to the next in regards to issues like spousal support and alimony, child custody, and property division, but issues like the filing procedures, document titles, child support, divorce grounds, and residency requirements can vary tremendously. The divorce laws on our site are often abbreviated to provide a general understanding in an easy to read fashion. If you are having problems understanding how a certain aspect of the law applies to your situation, we suggest contacting a divorce lawyer in your area Choose Your State

Divorce, nontraditional families, and its consequences for children
If in the future women achieve real economic equality with men, men will doing roughly half the unpaid work in the home that women now do. That is the main prerequisite of women's equality. If men are doing roughly half the unpaid work at home, that me ans that roughly half the primary parentsthe parents who stay home when Junior is sick, reduce their job-related travel, or stay at home for years while the children are smallwill be men. That is, the sexual division of labor in the home will have me lted away. Could that happen? I think so. One question we should look into carefully, though, is what effect such a big change would have on the rate of divorce. To help us evaluate how important a question that is, I would also like to explore what t he consequences of divorce are for children. First, what will happen to divorce rates? The honest answer is that no one knows. The research done by psychologists and physicians on two-parent families in which the father is the primary parent really doesn't yield good information about divorce rates in such families. We can speculate a little. Economists have found, for example, that as women's incomes rise in a country, the divorce rate rises, too. It seems that when most women have low incomes, few feel that they can afford to divorce. Wh en many women make enough to barely survive on independently, more bail out of marriages that make them miserable. The current trend, and the trend required if women are to achieve economic equality, is for women to greatly increase their incomes. That may increase the divorce rate. However, during the 1980's, when women's average earnings were rising considerably in the United States, divorce rates levelled off. Clearly, many other factors influence divorce rates.

SPORT Divorce or dissolution of marriage NK Marriages lasted longer then Divorce can be contrasted with an annulment, which is a declaration that a marriage is void, though the effects of marriage may be recognized in such unions, such as spousal support or Alimony, child custody, child support, and distribution of property. In many developed countries, divorce rates have increased markedly during the twentieth century. Among the states in which divorce has become commonplace are the United States, South Korea, and members of the European Union, with the exception of Malta (where all civil marriages are for life, because civil divorce is banned, which is also the case in the Philippines). In the USA, Canada , the United Kingdom , and some other developed Commonwealth countries, this boom in divorce developed in the last half of the twentieth century. In addition, acceptance of the single-parent family has resulted in many women deciding to have children outside marriage, as there is little remaining social stigma attached to unwed mothers in some societies. Japan retains a markedly lower divorce rate, though it has increased in recent years. The subject of divorce as a social phenomenon is an important research topic in sociology.
