These techniques and styles have evolved over many centuries and these dolls and crafts play a significant role in Japanese culture even today. Japanese tradition prescribes the doll hold fans, flowers, ornaments or other Japanese objects. Each doll usually represents a Japanese folk tale or a piece of history. Europe later became the center of dollmaking. Very popular was the undressed Peg wooden doll from Val Gardena. In the United States, dollmaking became an industry in the 1860s
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from Doll making Jump to: navigation search For other uses, see Doll (disambiguation) A porcelain doll from the Czech Republic. Look up doll in Wiktionary , the free dictionary. A doll is a model of a human being. Dolls have been around since the dawn of human civilization, and have been fashioned from a vast array of materials, ranging from stone, clay, wood, bone, cloth and paper, to porcelain, china, rubber and plastic. While dolls have traditionally been toys for children , traditionally seen as a girls toy, they are also collected by adults, for their nostalgic value, beauty, historical importance or financial value. In ancient times, dolls were used as representations of a deity, and played a central role in religious ceremonies and rituals. Lifelike or anatomically correct dolls are used by health professionals, medical schools and social workers to train doctors and nurses in various health procedures or investigate cases of sexual abuse of children. Artists sometimes use jointed wooden mannequins in drawing the human figure. Action figures representing superheroes and their predecessors, action dolls, are particularly popular among boys.

Bisque head doll from the 1870s Archaeological evidence places dolls as foremost candidate for oldest known toy , having been found in Egyptian tombs which date to as early as 2000 BCE . In Egypt, as well as Greece and Rome, it was common to find them in the graves of children. Most were made of wood, although pottery dolls were buried with children from wealthier families. Dolls with movable limbs and removable clothing date back to 200 BCE.

Minnie Lou has been making dolls for several years. Primarily, she makes cloth dolls, but also carved and dressed a Pinocchio (from scratch) as well as whimsical dolls and Christmas ornaments on a Raggedy Ann theme. Some of the dolls she has made are shown below. Click on the thumbnail to get a larger detailed view.
If interested in learning how to make these, send an email
Some dolls we made
This Pinocchio stands about 11 inches high; he is fully jointed and was carved from jelutong, a wood from Indonesia. His clothes are hand made and he has several interchangable noses to indicate the present state of his truthfulness. Minnie Lou won first prize for hand made dolls at the Land O' Sky Doll Day, UFDC Region 8 in Asheville, NC in 2002 for her craftsmanship. The pattern was an original designed by Minnie Lou.
This depiction of The Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe (...and had so many children, she didn't know what to do...) was made using an old Army boot. The figures and house fixtures are polymer clay. This was done as a "shoe challenge" held by Hawaii Stitchery and Fiber Arts Guild. The design was original by Minnie Lou.
This is "Rainbow" the Color Fairy; since Minnie Lou is an artist, she has a special affection for the fairies who created and maintain the rich colors in the world around us. Rainbow was published in Quilting Arts magazine Spring 2006 (issue 21) as an entry in the Fantasy Guardian Angel Art Doll Challenge. 50% of a Patti Culea pattern.

If you have a question, a tip, or you want to chat about the doll you are working on, then please post away! However, we do have a few tips to make our list time more efficient and stress-free.
    • No flaming. Disagreeing is fine (although there are people on the list who would disagree with me about this!) but it should never get to the point of personal attack.
    • Please remember that there are 800 people on this list. If your note is meant for one person, then please send it to that one person. For example, if you want to ask someone how her mother is doing, tell someone you loved their web page or their post, or that you love their dolls, then send it to that one person and not the whole list. If your note begins "Hi Agatha" then that's a hint that you meant it for Agatha and not for 800 people. If you say something like "everybody, you should go see Agatha's web page" then that is different from "Hi Agatha, I love the lavender background on your web page." Just think before you send it will a reasonably high percentage of the list members want to read your note?

Celebrities in particular are often depicted in doll form, for example: Shirley Temple Doll, the original "Barbie" was named after the daughter of the creator, there are male dolls too, the old fashioned GI Joe use to be my Barbie doll's boyfriend. Ball Joint Dolls are very popular as are Blythe dolls.
Some dolls are meant to be looked at and thought about, they are hand made, and are called
