84. Animal Welfare And Domestic Violence By Ascione, Weber & Wood : The Zero 5.0laf
Findings of a study by Frank R. Ascione and Utah State University colleagues concerning history of pet abuse in households of women housed in shelters for victims of domestic violence. Includes links to related resources.

Final Report on the project entitled:
Animal Welfare and Domestic Violence By Frank R. Ascione, Ph.D, Claudia V. Weber, M.S., and David S. Wood,
Utah State University, Logan, Utah
Originally submitted to The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation , April 25, 1997 "I have spoken with the most vulnerable and seen how poisoned they have become... They show us that committing acts of violence is traumatic. They show us that witnessing acts of violence is traumatic. And they show us that inside most of the adolescent and adult perpetrators of violence are traumatized children, untreated children, frightened children."
Raising children in a socially toxic environment . San Francisco: Jossey-Bass. (p.86) OVERVIEW This study represents the first attempt to assess animal maltreatment in samples of women seeking safety at shelters for women who are battered (101 women) and community samples of women who were not battered (60 women). We developed instruments to measure pet abuse from women and children's reports and assessed levels of family violence (not including pet abuse) using the well known Conflict Tactics Scale. Current and past pet ownership (in the past 12 months) was high for all samples (ranging from 64.1% to 96.6%) but the shelter sample reported lower current pet ownership than the community sample. There were also lower levels of regular and emergency veterinary care and pet vaccination rates in the shelter sample. Pet "turnover" over the past 5 years was higher in the shelter group. Partners (e.g., husbands, boyfriends) of shelter women were less likely to help care for animals than partners of community sample women.

Domestic Violence: An Overview
> Introduction
Domestic Violence isn't just hitting, or fighting, or an occasional mean argument. It's a chronic abuse of power. The abuser tortures and controls the victim by calculated threats, intimidation, and physical violence. Actual physical violence is often the end result of months or years of intimidation and control.
In their diagnostic and treatment guidelines for physicians, The American Medical Association defines intimate partner abuse as "the physical, sexual, and/or psychological abuse to an individual perpetrated by a current or former intimate partner. While this term is gender-neutral, women are more likely to experience physical injuries and incur psychological consequences of intimate partner abuse."
In a study, published in the Archives of Family Medicine, designed to measure physician's attitudes and practices toward victims of domestic violence, Snugg, et al, defined

We have 100,000 brochures available for immediate distribution. The ABA is committed to promoting this project through a media campaign. The TIPS Law in Public Service Committee, in conjunction with the ABA Commission on Domestic Violence, will be selecting up to ten participating businesses around the country to showcase in a media campaign. This is a "win win" situation in that the participating companies will be providing its employees with a benefit while at the same time the companies will be receiving national recognition for its efforts. Of course the employees are the ultimate winners in that information will be available to them on how to stay safe and how to locate available resources for help should they become victims of domestic violence. Please take this information to your clients and obtain a commitment to distribute the brochures throughout their work place. For additional information or brochures (available in hard copy or on diskette), contact Sonia Schroeder in ABA TIPS. Please provide her with the names of your clients that have committed to this project and let her know the number of brochures that are required and the name of the contact person to whom brochures and implementation packets should be sent. 93. ATS, August 11, 2000, Researchers Look At Role Of Medical Records In Domestic Vi
An essay from the Harvard School on Public Health discussing the importance of medical records in domestic violence legal cases.
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/ats/Aug11/
Researchers Look at Role of Medical Records in Domestic Violence Legal Cases When doctors treat battered women, the medical notes they record may reach beyond the examining room to the courtroom. Yet many doctors don't know the best ways to document their treatment of abused women to help the women in the legal arena, says Nancy Isaac, senior research scientist at the Harvard Injury Control Research Center. Isaac recently co-authored a report called Medical Records as Legal Evidence of Domestic Violence with Pualani Enos, a colleague from Northeastern University School of Law "This is really one of the first times that a legal perspective in a broad sense has been applied to medical records with respect to domestic violence," said Isaac. Isaac and Enos studied nearly 100 medical charts of women who had previously been identified as abuse survivors. They found that physicians frequently did not screen for abuse and that the notes taken would not mean much in a courtroom. "The potential risks of documentation to the clinician or the patient appear to be more salient to clinicians than the potential benefits," write the report's authors. "This is not surprising given that they have received little information about why and how medical records can assist abuse survivors in legal settings."

Abstract
Liability Issues for Online Domestic Violence Organizations
The Internet is a relatively new arena for delivery of human services. Some organizations are using the Web to supplement their services while others are "virtual organizations" that only exist online. The public is becoming accepting of using the Internet to find information about health and human service concerns. One study found that more than thirty-one million people had done so ( Green and Himelstein, 1998 ). Moreover, the "gender gap" in computer use is disappearing. A recent study by Nielson/NetRatings notes that one-half of computer users are female and that women are more likely to use the Internet to find information about health and quality of life than are men ( Glassner, 1999

98. Bible Studies And Lessons
Large collection of Old and New Testament readings and lessons intended to give women guidance for dealing with domestic abuse and its effects.
http://www.abigails.org/a-studypage.htm
Bible Studies and Lessons
In the Abigails Support Group, participants find biblical guidance for dealing with abuse and its effects. The Bible helps us to understand domestic violence and shows us godly ways to respond to it. The Abigails Support Group uses a year-long series of weekly lessons developed by the Olympia Union Gospel Mission, covering topics such as the dynamics of domestic violence, verbal and emotional abuse, godly submission and godly headship, leaving an abusive situation, forgiveness, boundaries, and much more. Each lesson is designed to last about a half hour and includes discussion questions.
OUGM is making these lessons available on the Internet to proclaim God's mercy, wisdom, and help in time of need. If you are struggling with abuse, we pray that these lessons will help you with truth from God's Word. If you have a support group for victims of domestic violence or other ministry, we hope these lessons will be a blessing to your work. These materials may be reproduced for use in ministry or other non-commercial purposes. If you wish to print out the studies, check to see if they contain internal links to supplemental pages that should also be printed. If you have comments, feedback, suggestions, or questions, feel free to contact Judy at judy@abigails.org

12 FACTS ABOUT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
  • The number one health risk to women in the U.S is domestic violence. The Surgeon General's office reported in 1992 that domestic violence causes more injuries to women than rapes, muggings, and car accidents combined.
  • Compared with other women, victims of domestic violence:
  • are twice as likely to miscarry and 4 times as likely to bear a low birth-weight baby if attacked during pregnancy.
  • are 5 times more likely to commit suicide
  • are 4 times more likely to require psychiatric treatment
  • have an increased risk of alcohol abuse, drug dependence, chronic pain, and depression
