Dominica - Culture D ominica - a heaven for the ecology sensitive minds. It is an Island inhabited by people speaking the English language. Please keep in mind that it has nothing to do with the Dominican Republic Everything is here: mountain s and valleys covered with rain forests, exotic fauna and flora , waterfalls roaring down precipitous heights It is these environment attractions that have made hiking, exploring, biking, climbing and other mountain associated sports so popular among Dominica's visitors. Another favourite past-time and major tourist attraction: abundant ship wrecks scattered around the coral reef make this activity irresistible and very rewarding. Click To Go Back

Dominica is home to a wide range of people. Although it was historically occupied by several native tribes, the Arawaks and Kalinago Carib tribes remained by the time European settlers reached the island. 'Massacre' is a name of a river dedicated to the murders of the Native villagers by French and British settlers, because the river ran red with blood for days. Each (French and British) claimed the island and imported slaves from Africa . The remaining Caribs now live on a 3,700-acre (15 km Carib Territory on the east coast of the island. They elect their own chief. Dominica is often seen as a society that is migrating from collectivism to that of individualism. The economy is a developing one that previously depended on agriculture. Signs of collectivism are evident in the small towns and villages which are spread across the island. Dominican cuisine is similar to that of other Caribbean countries. Common main courses comprise meat (usually chicken, but can be goat, lamb, or beef) covered in sauce. The sauces are either spicy pepper sauces, or concoctions made from local fruit. A huge variety of local fruit, from tamarind to passion fruit, are served on the island, usually in juice or sauce form. Soursop is peeled and eaten raw. Sorrel, a red flower that only blooms around

Dominica's Unique Culture
Like many Caribbean islands, Dominica has been influenced by different cultures over the course of its history. Originally inhabited by Arawak and Carib Indians, colonised by Europeans (the English and French in particular), injected with a strong African influence during the 18th century, then flooded with American television in recent years, Dominica's culture is as multi-faceted as the madras fabric worn as traditional dress.

Dominica has a rich culture and a fascinating history. Créole music, with its roots in the French Créole language, was born in Dominica, and is based on rhythmic African cultural musical patterns. Dancers, storytellers, artists and musicians can be found in every village, celebrating the culture with regular performances all over the island. especially during Créole week and Independance Day celebrations in November. Music is all about. The island has a fascinating history , settled first by the Caribs, then by Columbus, and later the British and the French fought several times over the ownership of first Waitukubuli (tall is her body), today known as Dominica. Our local village of Grand Fond has is also stooped in history ; the people are always excited to meet new visitors, and it is an interesting and welcoming place to visit and learn about local cuture. Each year, every village has its own feast, a time for eating, dancing, singing and folk traditions, and there are annual celebrations for Independance, Carnival and the World Créole Music Festival.

The four very different cultures that influenced Dominica can still be seen today
Diverse Dominica Four diverse cultures mingled to create the island culture of Dominica: The native Caribs influenced the British and French settlers who brought slaves from Africa with them. The resulting creole culture is evident in Dominica's food and language, as well as in many other important cultural expressions throughout the island.
Festivals and Music
Like most Caribbean islands, Dominica is home to several important festivals that center around music. Music of every kind can be found on the island, but calypso, reggae, and local folk music are particularly important. Each village on the island has its own village feast, which is a celebration of that village. Village feasts happen throughout the year around the island, but Carnival is an island-wide festival that takes place throughout the Caribbean. Dominica's Carnival celebration is known as Mas Dominik. It occurs before Lent and involves a "jump-up" celebration, as well as street parades and, of course, music. Wild costumes and calypso music are entertaining pieces of the celebration. The annual World Creole Music Festival is held on Dominica each October. During the festival, bands from around the world gather to play Creole music. Many bands hail from Caribbean basin countries such as Haiti and Venezuela, but several groups from Europe have also taken the stage.
