CULTURE The Eastern Caribbean has produced notable figures in literature, including V S Naipaul of Trinidad, George Lamming of Barbados, Jamaica Kincaid of Antigua, Maryse Condé and Nobel prizewinner Saint-John Perse of Guadeloupe, Jean Rhys of Dominica and St Lucia's Nobel prizewinner, Derek Walcott. The contemporary poets Aimé Césaire and Édouard Glissant hail from Martinique; they both write about the Blacks' struggles for cultural identity under the burden of colonial influences. The Caribbean's prime cultural contribution is its music - calypso, soca, steel pan, ska, reggae and zouk. Domestic architecture is characterised by brightly painted, corrugated-iron roofed, wooden-shuttered structures. Population densities vary widely, with Barbados' population density of 591 people per sq km making it one of the world's most densely populated countries, while some of the smaller islands such as Saba and St Barts have fewer than 5000 people. The vast majority of islanders are of African ancestry, and the ethnic mix also includes those of European, East Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian and American descent. About 3000 Caribs still live on the eastern side of Dominica, and there are smaller native populations on St Vincent and Trinidad.

H ISTORY AND E THNIC R ELATIONS
Emergence of the Nation. Dominica became part of the Leeward Islands in 1833, but changed affiliation to the Windward Islands in 1940. The country became an associated state within the British Commonwealth in 1967 before claiming independence in 1978. National Identity. Social and political unrest (including attempted coups in 1980 and 1981), economic instability, and the devastating Hurricane David in 1979 complicated the transition to independence. Further divisions included language and historical settlement patterns, as rural villages were relatively isolated from each other and from Roseau and Portsmouth, the second largest town, since colonization. Despite internal differences, the national identity embraced by urban intellectuals and the government was the cultural heritage highlighting French, African, and Carib influence, more than British. A discourse of development unites the country.

People of Dominica Dominica is mainly made up of the black, constituting over 90 per cent of the population. They are basically descendants of the slaves brought from Africa in the 18th century. A small group of Carib also inhabits the island. Though English is the official language, French Patois is also widely spoken. Majority of the population are Roman Catholics. Flag of Dominica The flag of Dominica is green, with a centered cross of three equal bands. The vertical part of the flag towards the hoist side is yellow; then black, and then white. The horizontal part is again yellow, then black, and then white. The center of the cross is superimposed with a red disk bearing a sisserou parrot encircled by 10 green, five-pointed stars
edged in yellow. The 10 stars represent the 10 administrative divisions (parishes).

Economy of Dominica High annual rainfall has given way to rich, fertile soil in Dominica. This, in turn, has promoted farming and today farming forms the backbone of the economy in Dominica. Agricultural products grown include bananas, citrus fruit (especially grapefruit and limes), coconuts, cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla beans, and vegetables. Manufacturing is limited to processing of farm products. Fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, soap, and essential oils forms the main manufactured products.
