CULTURE The Eastern Caribbean has produced notable figures in literature, including V S Naipaul of Trinidad, George Lamming of Barbados, Jamaica Kincaid of Antigua, Maryse Condé and Nobel prizewinner Saint-John Perse of Guadeloupe, Jean Rhys of Dominica and St Lucia's Nobel prizewinner, Derek Walcott. The contemporary poets Aimé Césaire and Édouard Glissant hail from Martinique; they both write about the Blacks' struggles for cultural identity under the burden of colonial influences. The Caribbean's prime cultural contribution is its music - calypso, soca, steel pan, ska, reggae and zouk. Domestic architecture is characterised by brightly painted, corrugated-iron roofed, wooden-shuttered structures. Population densities vary widely, with Barbados' population density of 591 people per sq km making it one of the world's most densely populated countries, while some of the smaller islands such as Saba and St Barts have fewer than 5000 people. The vast majority of islanders are of African ancestry, and the ethnic mix also includes those of European, East Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian and American descent. About 3000 Caribs still live on the eastern side of Dominica, and there are smaller native populations on St Vincent and Trinidad.

Don't get mad...just wait 'til 'manana'
How do we explain what the Dominican Republic culture is like? I suppose an appropriate anecdote to introduce Dominican Republic culture would have been to say: " I invited a couple of Dominican friends around to dinner at 7.00 pm to discuss what I should write. One arrived two hours late and the other one...well a couple of days went by and I'm still waiting for them to turn up!" The Mañana Syndrome For most visitors to the Dominican Republic getting accustomed to the serious 'manana syndrome' here can take a bit of time... Okay, so it can be an uphill struggle getting tradesmen to come round and do a little job, and yes maybe you'll wait an unexpectedly long time for a barman in an apparently quiet Dominican Republic hotel bar to get round to pouring you drinks, and sure that lovely local couple you met and agreed to meet for a dinner date may still be due to turn up and your table was booked for over an hour ago... Just Keep Smiling...

The Dominican Republic has a rich and interesting culture, which sadly many tourists to not get a chance to experience. The country has an amalgamation of influences, with a combination of European Spanish and Latin American.
Dominican people are by nature, friendly and warm-hearted. It’s not unusual for them to invite you into their home to share in a meal. They like to smile and you will often see a group having a light hearted chat, slapping each other on the back, and generally enjoying life. You will generally be greeted with a friendly “Como Estas?” which simply means, “How are you?”
Happy faces of Dominican peopleThe country is viewed as a poor country, and indeed by Western standards, many people live in conditions you would not consider bearable. Far away from the tourist enclaves, Dominican houses are typically small, usually without running water and often without electricity. Many streets are narrow and unpaved, and when it rains, water gushes along the street. This isn’t to say that everybody is poor. The major cities and some of the tourist towns have their share of well-off people as with most countries.

CULTURE
Dominican Republic - Info The Dominican Republic, (Spanish: República Dominicana, IPA [re'puβlika domini'kana]) is a country located on the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, bordering Haiti. Hispaniola is the second-largest of the Greater Antilles islands, and lies west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica. A legacy of unsettled, mostly non-representative rule lasted for much of the 20th century; the move towards representative democracy has improved vastly since the death of military dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in 1961. Dominicans sometimes refer to their country as Quisqueya, a name for Hispaniola used by indigenous Taíno people. The Dominican Republic is not to be confused with Dominica, another Caribbean country.
