The Ph.D. Program in Comparative Literature with an Emphasis in Drama
The Ph.D. in Comparative Literature with an Emphasis in Drama allows students with the requisite expertise in a language other than English to complete work in Theater Studies at the Ph.D. level. Students take courses, complete comprehensive exams, and write dissertations in the domains of Theater History, Dramatic Literature, Dramatic Theory, and Performance Studies. The program is closely linked with the Performing Arts Department, which provides opportunities to interested and qualified students for both academic and practical work in theatrical production. Candidates follow the same language requirements as Ph.D. students in the General Program of Comparative Literature: four graduate-level courses in a language and literature other than English, and reading knowledge of a second foreign language. The program draws on Humanities faculty at Washington University who specialize in drama or regularly teach courses concentrating on dramatic literature.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1912. pp. 296-324. One species was the THIRTY YEARS OF A GAMBLER'S LIFE is a typical example of this French melodrama, none the less typical that one of its most striking incidents had been borrowed from a German play. The and the melodrama of the boulevard theaters were fortunately fettered by no rules, obeying only the one law, that they had to please the populace. They grew up spontaneously and abundantly; they were heedlessly unliterary; they were curbed by no criticism, which was never wasted by the men-of-letters on these species of drama, deemed quite beneath their notice. The Now, as we look back across the years, we cannot but wonder why the task of ousting the dying and the dead should have seemed so arduous or have caused so much commotion. We marvel why there was a need of a critical manifesto like Victor Hugo 's preface to his CROMWELL or of a critical controversy over the difference between the Classic and the Romantic. Even then it ought to have been easily evident that there was nothing classic about the comedies and the tragedies which continued to be composed laboriously in accordance with the alleged rules of the theater; and even the defenders of the traditional faith might have suspected that there was really nothing sacrosanct about mere pseudo-classicism.

THE Greeks , from the rudest beginnings, and by the aid of their incomparable instinct for form, brought to perfection a lofty type of tragedy and an original kind of comedy. The Latins The desire for the drama, which seems to be instinctive in human nature the wide world over, from the Aleutian Islanders to the Bushmen of Australia, the impulse to personate and to take pleasure in beholding a story set forth in action, this may have been dormant during the long centuries, or it may have found some means of gratifying itself unrecorded in the correspondence of the time or by the chroniclers. Acrobats there were, and wandering minstrels ; and now and again we catch glimpses of singers of comic songs and of roving amusers who entertained with feats of sleight-of-hand, or who exhibited trained animals. These performers, always popular with the public at large, were also called in upon occasion to enliven the solid feasts of the rulers. Gibbon records that at the supper-table of Theodoric, in the middle of the fifth century, buffoons and performers of pantomimes were "sometimes introduced to divert, not do offend, the company by their ridiculous wit." And Froissart records that when he was a guest at the court of Gaston Phébus, toward the end of the fourteenth century, strolling jesters sometimes presented a little play during the repast, or acrobats went through their daring performances. The entertainments described by Gibbons and by Froissart, however long the interval between them, bear an obvious likeness to our latter-day "vaudeville suppers."

What is the best way to go about reading dramatic literature? At first, the student might feel as if she is reading a set of instructions. Most plays contain dialogue along with cold, calculating stage directions. Yet, a play can be a moving literary experience. Dramatic literature presents several challenges to a student, making the reading experience different than poetry or fiction. Here are some tips for students to make the most out of reading a play.
    Read with a Pencil
Mortimer Adler wrote a terrific essay titled "How to Mark a Book." To truly embrace the text, Adler believes the reader should jot down notes, reactions and questions directly onto the page or in a journal. Students who record their reactions as they read are more likely to remember the characters and various subplots. Best of all, they are more likely to actively participate in class discussion and ultimately earn a better grade. zSB(3,3)

Live Theatre and Dramatic Literature in the Medieval Arabic World
Journal of the American Oriental Society, The July-Sept, 1994 by Everrett K. Rowson
That is, however, precisely the thesis argued in Professor Moreh's stimulating book. Focusing his inquiry on the long stretch of time between the Hellenistic theater in the eastern Mediterranean of antiquity and the arrival of European theater in the nineteenth century, he asks whether the area could have been "entirely devoid" of theater during the intervening two millennia, and replies in the negative. "The Muslim world," he claims, "had a well-established tradition of live theatre, if only at a popular level." Why it remained at this level, without developing into "high art," is a question for further research, he says; but in the present book he marshals evidence from an impressive range of sources to show that some sort of drama did exist, and in so doing both considerably advances our knowledge of medieval Arabic culture and furnishes rich material for future investigation.

The study of Drama requires students to engage with one of the most venerable and complex of the arts. The Program in Dramatic Literature, Theater History, and Cinema recognizes the special nature of Drama, in particular its relationship to literary texts as well as to the performing arts, both theater and cinema. Accordingly, the program allows students with a primary interest in Drama to study it intensively and comparatively within the fields of literature, theater history and production, and cinema. The curriculum brings students into a close intellectual engagement with the classical and contemporary texts of Britain, Europe, and America, while also providing opportunities for practical dramatic and theatrical experiences. The program encourages students not only to pursue their interests through production and playwriting classes but also to take advantage of New York's thriving theater scene.

Spanish auto , act or ordinance; sacramental , sacramental, pertaining to a sacrament) A form of dramatic literature which is peculiar to Spain , though in some respects similar in character to the old Morality plays of England . The auto sacramental may be defined as a dramatic representation of the mystery of the Eucharist . At least this is the definition that would apply to the auto of the time of . It does not so well fit, however, those of the preceding century, many of which were sacramental in character only because they were presented during the feast of Corpus Christi . They are usually allegorical, the characters representing, for example, Faith Hope , Air, Sin , Death, etc. There were some indeed, in which not a single human character appeared, but personifications of the Virtues , the Vices , the Elements, etc. As early as the thirteenth century religious exhibitions had been popular with the masses in Spain . These usually took the form of simple dialogue, and were presented during religious festivals , for instance, at Christmas and Easter . But it is not until the beginning of the sixteenth century that we have the first true auto sacramental having for its theme the mystery of the Eucharist . It was "El Auto de San Martin", by
