"This illustrious writer was, in conjunction with his brother Frederick, as most European readers well know, the founder of the modern romantic school of German literature, and as a critic fought many a hard battle for his faith. The clearness of his insight into poetical and dramatic truth, Englishmen will always be apt to estimate by the fact that it procured for himself and for his countrymen the freedom of Shakspeare's enchanted world, and the taste of all the marvellous things that, like the treasures of Aladdin's garden, are fruit and gem at once upon its immortal boughs: Frenchmen will not readily forget that he disparaged Moliere. The merit of Schlegel's dramatic criticism ought not, however, to be thus limited. Englishmen themselves are deeply indebted to him. His Lectures, translated by Black, excited great interest here when first published, some thirty years since, and have worthily taken a permanent place in our libraries."

The Good Woman of Setzuan by Bertolt Brecht
This drama reminded me slightly of the story of the wall of Jericho, well, the back story. The story of the prostitute who shelters Joshua from harm and because of her faithfulness, she is spared. I found very little footage or pictures of the actual play being performed, and very little stuck out to me. However, the following few clips/photos struck me as being powerfully beautiful; a great symbol of what the play meant to me.

August Strindberg's A Dream Play
Whoa. After reading this through three times, I have no idea what is going on. The language is beautiful and stark though, so I definitely could walk away with something. I felt like Caryl Churchill did an amazing job updating it. The truths left me very depressed and now I am hesitant about getting married, for sure. The section that is discussing about a life of unhappiness struck me, especially when they said having a baby would be a good solution. The idiocy is striking, but it was like holding up a mirror to today's society. People get married and don't want to work on their relationship, because they are so stuck on being right all the time, so they come up with other solutions that allow them to be correct. Having a baby is one of them. There is nothing worse than a child having to grow up in a family where his/her parents do not have a functioning relationship. I feel like every person should read this play before signing a marriage license for its truths.

Bachelor of Arts with a major in Dramatic Literature
Is an interdisciplinary major, combining coursework in the Department of English with courses in Theatre. If the 20th Century was the century where the theatre director emerged as King, many theatre professionals believe that the 21st Century will see the Dramaturge taking the throne. The Dramatic Literature Major encourages a deeper study of the text and its relationship to performance. Playwriting, dramatic criticism, dramaturgy, directing are all areas that are enriched by this curriculum. Special Honors: In addition to meeting the general requirements stated under University Regulations, candidates for graduation with Special Honors in Dramatic Literature must have a grade point average of 3.4 in the major and complete TrDa 199, Honors Thesis with a grade of A. They must consult with a faculty advisor at the beginning of the second semester of the junior year to determine eligibility, area of study, and the director of the research or creative project.

dramatic literature,
the texts of plays that can be read, as distinct from being seen and heard in performance. A brief treatment of dramatic literature follows. For full treatment, see MACROPAEDIA: Literature, The Art of: Dramatic literature The relations between dramatic texts and the performances for which such writing was intended are neither simple nor regular. In the case of the Greek dramatists of the 5th century BC, the texts now available are a small selection made by later copying and preservation. There is no way of knowing how these relate, precisely, to the compositions made available for the original productions. The problem here as in many later periods is the relation between the words written to be spoken or sung by the performers and the many other elements of dramatic compositionin movement, in scene and costume, and occasionally in musicthat the performance would include. Some of these can be inferred from the particular styles of writing, but most have to be studied from other kinds of surviving accounts. In the drama of the English Renaissance it was at first unusual to publish plays as if they were literary works, but the importance of the dramatic writing of the period eventually established many of the plays as texts. It is again necessary to infer other elements of the full dramatic composition from other kinds of information about theatres, audiences, and acting. In later periods, and especially from the 19th century onward, it became habitual to include in the written text of a play, and especially in its independently published form, details not only of scene and stage movement but also of the appearance of the characters and of the states of mind intended to accompany or to punctuate the spoken words. Some of these later texts of plays resemble, in part, the printed modes of novels or short stories.
