Severe Drought Droughts occur throughout North America and in any year, at least one region is experiencing drought conditions. We usually don't think of droughts in the same way as other natural disasters, such as floods or hurricanes. For example, no one knows for sure how severe a drought will be - until the rains return. But droughts can be more costly than other natural disasters. Information on this page will help you take steps to reduce impacts before and during a drought:
Before a drought happens
In general, adopt or change to practices, techniques, and equipment that use less on water or work well regardless of drought conditions, before you need them. Not only will this make drought conditions easier to bear, it will reduce demand on existing supplies in general. At home:
  • Install lawn or garden irrigation systems that deliver water most effectively, such as drip hoses instead of above-ground sprinklers.

Child abuse on the rise around the globe
By David Mark for AM Posted February 6, 2010 05:49:00
Updated February 6, 2010 08:11:00 Hurting: UNICEF says one billion people went hungry last year and South Asia has been hit particularly hard (www.sxc.hu: File photo, Charlie Balch) Stories of child trafficking and sexual abuse in Haiti have been underscored by a new United Nations Children's Fund report which says the problem is increasing globally. UNICEF's latest Humanitarian Action Report, released yesterday, details the dismal plight of children in 28 countries suffering humanitarian crises. The regional director for UNICEF in South Asia, Daniel Toole, says the report points to child trafficking and endemic sexual abuse of women and children wherever there is conflict and the breakdown of society. "Sexual violence against women and children is particularly widespread in situations of emergencies," he said. "Society and the glue that holds society starts to break down. People move, the communities are broken apart, families are broken apart and so the normal social mores that protect children, the normal community support functions also start to disappear.

Frequently Asked Questions
To whom do water-use schedules apply?
The schedules apply to water providers permitted by EPD and their customers. Please contact your water authority for the schedules in place for your address.
How do odd/even water-use schedules work?
Odd/even water-use schedules work as follows:
How does the EPD decide to put water-use schedules in place?
How does the EPD decide on times for outdoor water-use schedules?
They set the times for the schedules based on local water-use patterns. The times set are based on when the most water is used: businesses use the most during the day to water their landscaping and homeowners use the most water outdoors (for washing cars and watering lawns and gardens, for example) when they get home from work. By scheduling water use during these times, EPD could quickly affect the amount of water being drawn from the resources available.
When are outdoor water-use schedules lifted?

Epidemics after natural disasters.
The relationship between natural disasters and communicable diseases is frequently misconstrued. The risk for outbreaks is often presumed to be very high in the chaos that follows natural disasters, a fear likely derived from a perceived association between dead bodies and epidemics. However, the risk factors for outbreaks after disasters are associated primarily with population displacement. The availability of safe water and sanitation facilities, the degree of crowding, the underlying health status of the population, and the availability of healthcare services all interact within the context of the local disease ecology to influence the risk for communicable diseases and death in the affected population. We outline the risk factors for outbreaks after a disaster, review the communicable diseases likely to be important, and establish priorities to address communicable diseases in disaster settinqs.
Natural disasters are catastrophic events with atmospheric, geologic, and hydrologic origins. Disasters include earthquakes
