Drought
All results A drought is an extended period of months or years when a region notes a deficiency in its water supply. Generally, this occurs when a region receives consistently below average precipitation. It can have a substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region. Although droughts can persist for several years, even a short, intense drought can cause significant damage and harm the local economy. This global phenomenon has a widespread impact on agriculture. more on en.wikipedia.org

The Orphan Crisis Exposed:
Between “Bollywood” and American companies hiring in India, it may be hard to believe that India has an orphan crisis. India has about three times the American population living in one third of the space. Introduce intense poverty, famine, drought, natural disasters, AIDS, and malaria, and you have a recipe for tragedy and, most significantly, unaccompanied children. In such conditions, it is no surprise that many parents die, leaving their children to a nation unable to take care of them. On the streets, children are disturbingly vulnerable; evil adults will cripple orphaned children in order to use them for begging. It is also no surprise that children are often abandoned, particularly handicapped children and baby girls (whose dowries will put unbearable financial burdens on their parents). If girls are not abandoned, they might be killed soon after birth or married off at nine years old to a man 30 years older than them. I am not sure which is worse—are you?

Black Hawk pilot speaks out on Iraq commitment Aug 28, 2008 BY Kari Hawkins, Redstone Rocket Staff Retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Mike Durant, an Army pilot held in captivity for 11 days after his Black Hawk was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade during the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, correlates the lessons on leadership in the battlefield with the lessons every good organization or business should follow as they strive for success. Durant spoke at a luncheon meeting of the Huntsville Chapter of the National Contract Management Association. Photo by Kari Hawkins, Redstone Rocket Staff The nation's "Black Hawk Down" pilot, who is the only survivor of a helicopter crash in Somalia nearly 15 years ago during the Battle of Mogadishu, told a group of contract managers that the U.S. has accomplished too much in Iraq to pull out before achieving mission success.
Retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Mike Durant, who was portrayed in the 2001 military movie "Black Hawk Down" and who has authored two best-selling books based on his experiences in Somalia and in the Army, spoke about the need to properly manage the war in Iraq during a question-and-answer period following his presentation to members of the Huntsville Chapter of the National Contract Management Association at a luncheon meeting Aug. 21 at the Huntsville Marriott.

pose a threat to life, property, human activities and the environment, including tornadoes, thunderstorms, storms, cyclones, floodproducing rain or drought. Natural disasters
http://www.itu.int/wsis/gfc/docs/2/statements/wmo.html
Statement of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) at the occasion of the second special meeting of the Group of Friends of the Chair of the Prepcom of the second phase of the WSIS Background The World Meteorological Organization appreciates the draft political chapeau and the operational part of the final document prepared for the meeting, and thanks for the opportunity to comment on these documents. Most of all weather elements of unusual severity or for abnormal duration pose a threat to life, property, human activities and the environment, including tornadoes, thunderstorms, storms, cyclones, flood-producing rain or drought. Natural disasters, which occur on timescales ranging from minutes to years, have led to an enormous toll of human suffering, loss of lives and property damage. The increasingly accurate and reliable information on weather, climate and water allows for improved decision-making, which has the potential to offset the negative impacts of weather and climate. Early warnings of weather, climate and water extremes protect life and property, provided that they can reach their target audience in a timely and suitable manner. An ongoing challenge lies in the fact that the developing countries, which are among the most exposed to natural disasters, have limited access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). At the occasion of the World Conference on Disaster Reduction (18-22 January 2005, Kobe (Japan)), the World Meteorological Organisation organises a WSIS thematic meeting on ICT Applications in Natural Disaster Reduction. The meeting will consider how the Information Society should respond to the needs for the universal and equitable access to weather, climate and water warnings and information in order to reduce loss of life and property caused by disasters to a minimum.
