Comparison of the perceived harm for various psychoactive drugs from a poll among medical psychiatrists specialized in addiction treatment ICD F F ICD ... MeSH Substance abuse , also known as drug abuse , refers to a maladaptive pattern of use of a substance that is not considered dependent. The term "drug abuse" does not exclude dependency, but is otherwise used in a similar manner in nonmedical contexts. The terms have a huge range of definitions related to taking a psychoactive drug or performance enhancing drug for a non-therapeutic or non-medical effect. All of these definitions imply a negative judgment of the drug use in question (compare with the term responsible drug use for alternative views). Some of the drugs most often associated with this term include alcohol amphetamines barbiturates benzodiazepines ... methaqualone , and opioids . Use of these drugs may lead to criminal penalty in addition to possible physical, social, and psychological harm, both strongly depending on local jurisdiction. Other definitions of drug abuse fall into four main categories: public health definitions, mass communication and vernacular usage, medical definitions, and political and criminal justice definitions.

Narconon Drug Prevention and Education
There are currently 15 million drug users in the United States and an increasingly large number of those are children. Ours is a nation that largely praises quick fixes and easy relief, which leads to the event of experimentation followed by addiction. Narconon drug prevention staff have educated over 3.5 million school children through the Narconon drug education and training programs. Our program has demonstrated effectiveness in keeping kids off drugs Narconon centers and groups conduct numerous drug prevention activities around the world on a weekly basis. Training programs in communication and other life skills are conducted with high risk youth. Peer Leader training provides high school students with the skills needed to help counsel their peers and prevent them from using drugs.
Outcome studies show that early drug prevention must give young children the truth, the vital information and tools they need to make their own choice to keep away from drugs. Our track record over the past two decades is impressive with key results being reported.

Why is it t hat more than five thousand people in the US, mostly young people, start using illegal drugs every day?
Is it peer pressure? Is it because the media are constantly promoting drugs as the remedies to every ill? Or maybe it's because the people who make and sell drugs know exactly what 'buttons' to push to make a youngster want to use. Although all of these are contributing factors, they couldn't have an impact on our kids if there was effective drug education and drug abuse prevention in schools or other places where young people gather. The war on drugs will only be won by educating our children about the dangers of drugs. In addition to rehabilitating those who have fallen into the trap of drug abuse, Narconon staff work very hard to prevent young people from using drugs in the first place. The Narconon Drug Prevention and Education program has provided drug education programs to school children in Southern California for over 30 years and has reached hundreds of thousands students. We offer a comprehensive series of interactive presentations for students in grades three through twelve on the many subjects of drug use and abuse, drug prevention and drug education and drug abuse prevention..

Quotes for Note
From: "The Irrelevance of Evidence in the Development of school-based drug prevention policy," 1986-1996" by D. M. Gorman, Evaluation Review, vol 22, no 1, February 1998 118-146. "The evidence presented herein, from both national surveys and program evaluations, shows that we have yet to develop successful techniques of school-based drug prevention. The claims made on behalf of this aspect of the nation's drug control strategy are largely unsupported by empirical data. Evidence is cited to selectively support the use of certain programs, and there is virtually no systematic testing of interventions developed in line with competing theoretical models of adolescent drug use."
"Programs can be proven to have 'worked' because the standards by which they are judged can be continuously lowered. Questions are raised about those who dispute claims of effectiveness regarding the chosen policies. The issue becomes not whether the stated goals and objectives of programs are being met, but the commitment and motives of critics. The burden of proof is placed on them to demonstrate the detrimental effects of policies and programs, whereas advocates are free to make lavish claims of success and value to society."

Drug Prevention
Drug prevention seems like a phrase only a school-kid might hear. However, drug prevention applies to everyone. People of all ages children, teens, adults and older people are all at risk for becoming addicted to one or more substances, whether cocaine or alcohol, heroin or prescription drugs. The best and most feasible way to put an end to the nation's drug problem is to begin at the source, with drug prevention. If you are already abusing drugs, we urge you to seek help immediately. If you know someone who is at risk for becoming addicted to drugs, you may want to share this drug prevention resource with him or her. Parents
Rates of substance use among young people are lower among those whose parents disapprove of substance use than among those whose parents do not disapprove. If you are a parent, make sure you talk with your children about drug prevention before the threat of drugs becomes a reality in your child's life.

Recent local data indicates that alarming amounts of youth are engaging in underage drinking. The 2008 Prevention Needs Assessment (PNA) Survey was administered to over 2,500 students in Lenawee County in the 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades. The survey indicated that about 30% of 12th grade students in Lenawee County self-reported heavy use of alcohol in the form of binge drinking (four or more drinks in a row for females and five or more drinks in a row for males.) The survey also revealed that 12% of 6th grade students, 36% of 8th grade students, 59% of 10th grade students, and about 70% of 12th grade students have used alcohol within their lifetime. In another recent survey conducted in 2009 with youth of Lenawee County, 64% of 17-19 year olds did not believe an underage youth was at a great risk of harm if the youth drank 5 or more drinks 1 or 2 times a weekend...
