Prevention
Preventing drug use before it begins is a cost-effective, common-sense approach to promoting safe and healthy communities. Yet translating this uncontroversial principle into effective action has often been challenging. Although efforts such as the Drug Free Communities (DFC) program, Strategic Prevention Framework-State Incentive Grants, and, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign have made a positive difference, it has also been the case that many other poorly resourced, one-time prevention programs have been too limited in scope or too short in duration to have made a substantial impact. The Obama Administration is committed to addressing these problems by strengthening proven community-based prevention efforts and building on the success of some our current efforts. More

In 2004, the Institute of Martial Arts staff members launched Detroit Help ing our Youth Development (DHYD) as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit group. For nearly 14 years, owners of the Institute of Martial Arts had been providing services to low-income, inner-city children in Detroit who could not afford to pay the fees, simply because the children congregated at the center. The youth of Detroit are in dire need of our support. The combination of high rates of unemployment, poverty and drug use have participated in increased gang activity and crime rates in Detroit Detroit Most Dangerous City United States in 2002 and 2003 because of its disproportionate rates of murder and violent crime. In fact, recent crime statistics show that more than 800 people in Detroit were shot within the first six months of 2004, indicating a 70% increase from 2003.

Drug Prevention - Questions and Answers
National and international drug prevention networks, community leaders and strong community coalitions are the key to changing public attitudes and reducing the availability of illicit drugs worldwide. Some effective tactics include promoting drug demand reduction principles and raising awareness about the societal consequences of drug abuse and addiction. Below you will learn about many other strategies that have been implemented and have successfully decreased the use of drugs from the global to the local perspective.
How can we prevent drug use throughout the world?
  • Countries can work in concert with the United Nations to reduce the demand for drugs by utilizing effective practices in treatment, law enforcement and prevention. Drug use itself should be targeted by educational efforts having a clear message of abstinence. The human trafficking and senseless violence practiced by the drug trade must be brought to light by journalists free to report on these tragedies.

DRUG PREVENTION VIDEO In May 1998, anti-drug advocate Guillermo D. Jalil, M.S., embarked on a 900 mile journey from Orlando, FL, to Virginia Beach, VA, to educate the general public about the effects and problems of addiction among our youth. He was assisted by video professionals Javier Diaz and Ricardo Flores. During his adventure, Jalil faced many challenges, including being sideswiped by a minivan in Savannah, GA. As he rode through six states in twelve days, he encountered the chase of nineteen dogs and was startled by a crocodile in South Carolina who wanted a snack in his bicycle pack. The tour was captured on digital video and is now available to schools, police officers and parent groups. During the biking tour, Jalil teamed up with the international anti-violence organization "Stop the Violence-Face the Music" to educate parents on how to talk to their children about drugs.

DEA Special Agents are assigned to communities around the nation, and many serve as Demand Reduction Coordinators (DRCs) as a collateral duty. They work with individuals and groups such as community coalitions, civic leaders, state and local drug prevention organizations, treatment experts and the general public, and they provide DEA's unique expertise in the areas of intelligence and enforcement. By joining DEA's law enforcement credibility and insights with communities' know-how, drug prevention efforts have been strengthened in cities, towns and rural areas across America. DEA's commitment to drug prevention began in 1985 when the Demand Reduction program was formally created. Since then, DEA has established long-lasting partnerships with federal, state, local and private organizations dedicated to reducing the demand for drugs. In addition to professional Headquarters drug prevention personnel, DEA has 31 DRCs working in communities throughout the nation.

Steroids and the Body Objective
To understand how steroids can harm the body physically and mentally. Background
Youths ages 14 to 18 are concerned about their appearance. Boys, especially, want to look muscular, and some use steroids to achieve that look. Some 6 percent of twelfth-grade males had used steroids, according to a 1989 survey by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This lesson teaches that steroids are dangerous to physical and mental health. Activities
Using the information on steroids from corresponding Web page discuss what steroids are and how they are used. Explain that some athletes have taken steroids to try to enhance their performance, because the synthetic drug can cause a 10 to 25 percent weight gain within three to six months. Other people have taken steroids to try to enhance their physique or appearance or to become more aggressive in sports competition. Discuss some of the side effects of steroid use (examples: heart and liver damage, withered testicles, and sterility in males; masculine characteristics in females). Steroids also can cause extremely aggressive behavior, drastic mood swings, and depression. They can cause injuries in two ways: (1) Because athletes who use these drugs are bigger and more aggressive than their bodies normally would allow, they may injure other athletes with whom they come into contact. (2) Steroids make muscles grow, but not the tendons and ligaments that connect them; unnaturally heavy and big muscles put extra stress on tendons and ligaments, causing injury.
