Most dyslexics will exhibit about 10 of the following traits and behaviors. These characteristics can vary from day-to-day or minute-to-minute. The most consistent thing about dyslexics is their inconsistency.
General
  • Appears bright, highly intelligent, and articulate but unable to read, write, or spell at grade level. Labelled lazy, dumb, careless, immature, "not trying hard enough," or "behavior problem." Isn't "behind enough" or "bad enough" to be helped in the school setting. High in IQ, yet may not test well academically; tests well orally, but not written. Feels dumb; has poor self-esteem; hides or covers up weaknesses with ingenious compensatory strategies; easily frustrated and emotional about school reading or testing. Talented in art, drama, music, sports, mechanics, story-telling, sales, business, designing, building, or engineering. Seems to "Zone out" or daydream often; gets lost easily or loses track of time.

Students struggling with some or all of the many facets of reading, writing and/or spelling are provided specialized assessment in order to determine if a student may be identified as a student with dyslexia. Those students who are identified are provided with an appropriate instructional program for the student at each campus. The major instructional strategies utilize individualized, intensive, and multi-sensory methods as appropriate. For any additional information please contact: Cherie Howell Lead Dyslexia Teacher howellc@friscoisd.org The purpose of this information area is to answer frequently asked questions concerning how students who may exhibit characteristics of dyslexia are served within the FISD. The guidelines and procedures adopted have been designed to correlate to the identification and instruction of students with dyslexia and related disorders adopted by the State Board of Education in 1992, mandated by the state of Texas, and presented in The Dyslexia Handbook: Procedures Concerning Dyslexia and Related Disorders.

Introduction to RfS What is Dyslexia? Who Has It? ... Bibliography
Reading from Scratch, (RfS/EL)
a program of science-based teaching techniques, now makes possible grade level or higher reading.
can't bright dyslectic people read well?
they are miswired to read with the wrong side of the brain. Only the left side can use phonics and keep sequences straight. (ART is not RAT). They dyslectic person relies on his right side which doesn't "do" phonics.
A bridge of tissue between the two sides of the brain is out of whack. Reading material that ought to go left goes right as well and the two sides are out of sync. Phonics can cure dyslexia, but only if it is delivered to the correct place at the correct time. Think of penicillin. Yes, it will cure pneuonia, but not if you rub it on your arm. Reading from Scratch works because it provides the critical delivery system: words are sent to the correct area on time.
The previously dyslectic student can finally do academic work that reflects his ability instead of his reading problem.

The term "dyslexia" was introduced in 1884 by the German ophthalmologist, R. Berlin. He coined it from the Greek words dys meaning ill or difficult and lexis meaning word, and used it to describe a specific disturbance of reading in the absence of pathological conditions in the visual organs. Over the years, the term dyslexia has been given a variety of definitions, and for this reason, many teachers have resisted using the term at all. Instead, they have used such terms as "reading disability" or "learning disability" to describe conditions more correctly designated as dyslexia. Read more… What is Dyseidetic Dyslexia?
Dysphonetic dyslexia, also called auditory dyslexia , refers to a difficulty connecting sounds to symbols. The child might have a hard time sounding out words, and spelling mistakes would show a very poor grasp of phonics. The dyseidetic child, on the other hand, generally has a good grasp of phonetic concepts. The prominent characteristic of the dyseidetic is the inability to revisualize the gestalt of the word.
