When a person has difficulties with reading, writing, spelling and maybe even speaking, no matter how hard he or she tries, the problem could be a learning disability known as dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a life-long language processing disorder that hinders the development of oral and written language skills. Children and adults with dyslexia can be highly intelligent, however they have a neurological disorder that causes the brain to process and interpret information differently.
Since so much of what happens in a classroom is based on reading and writing, it's important to identify dyslexia as early as possible and devise strategies to help a child succeed academically.

What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties that mainly affect reading and spelling. To some degree, about 10% of the population is affected by dyslexia. Dyslexia tends to run in families and it affects the person for his/her whole life, but can be minimised by special ways of working and learning. Dyslexia is not related to intelligence, though it can influence, in a positive way, spacial perception, lateral thinking and creativity. Dyslexia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Simple English Wiktionary has the word meaning for: dyslexia Dyslexia is a very common problem and has an effect on the way our brain understands words. The most common signs of dyslexia are reading and writing problems. Estimates are that in the United States between five and nine percent of schoolchildren have dyslexia, though estimates go as high as fifty percent. A person can have dyslexia even if he or she is very smart or educated. Recent studies show that there are many small business owners that have dyslexia; between 35 and 50 percent of U. S. and British entrepreneurs are affected. Researchers think that many dyslexic entrepreneurs are successful because they can delegate responsibilities (of writing letters) and still be good at speaking. At the end of the 20th century, scientists did a lot of research about dyslexia and found some of the reasons that people are dyslexic. A professor who did research in the 1980s and 1990s looked at the brains of dyslexic people who had died. He found that some parts of the brain were not connected very well, and that this happened during the fourth month of pregnancy. This problem has a big effect on the left half of the brain. The newest research shows that three genes are the reason for dyslexia.

http://www.dyslexia-add.org/
Since 1975, the goal of the Dyslexia Research Institute, Inc. has been to change the perception of learning differences, specifically in the area of dyslexia and attention deficit disorders (ADD). With proper recognition and intervention, dyslexics and individuals with ADD become successful individuals using their talents and skills to enrich our society. They may take their place alongside other dyslexics/ADDs, such as Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, and Nelson Rockefeller. Ten to fifteen percent of the US population has dyslexia, yet only five out of every one hundred dyslexics are recognized and receive assistance. Approximately 60% of individuals diagnosed with attention deficit disorders are also dyslexic, however, their learning and language differences are often unrecognized because only the behavioral aspects of ADD are addressed. Without the proper diagnosis and help, many of these dyslexics and ADD individuals are only functionally literate, and are part of the forty-four million adults with only the lowest level of literacy. This limits their ability to find jobs and function independently within their communities. The Dyslexia Research Institute mission is to change these statistics by providing appropriate identification and training.

    What Is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects approximately 10 percent of children. Those diagnosed with dyslexia have trouble connecting sounds to letter symbols. This affects the way children with dyslexia learn to read and spell. Fortunately, major strides have been made in understanding the language-based disorder, many of them at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Children with dyslexia can learn to read and be successful despite their learning differences. Dyslexia Defined materials. Dyslexia and TSRHC
The center provides evaluation and diagnosis for children with academic learning disorders, as well as specialized treatment for those with dyslexia. Led by medical director Dr. Jeff Black Differences in brain structure and function lead to problems in sound awareness that cause reading difficulties, known as dyslexia. It is proven to have a genetic component and often occurs in multiple family members. Dyslexia affects both boys and girls and can persist through adulthood.

The information and advice on this site is provided by a dyslexic, giving inside knowledge on the various ways of coping with Dyslexia and Learning Disability
Welcome to Dyslexia My Life - What is dyslexia by a dyslexic:
A common assumption about dyslexia is that it is characterized by reading words in reversed order, i.e., "was" looks like "saw." While this type of problem can be associated with dyslexia, the disorder cannot be explained simply as seeing letters backwards. Difficulties making the basic connection between symbols (letters) and their sounds mark dyslexia. When most children learn to read, they use typical "decoding" skills: recognizing letters on sight and learning the sound each letter makes. Then they begin to figure out (decode) what the letters will look and sound like when they are put together to form words. For people with dyslexia, the decoding process may be a challenge for several reasons. They may be unable to differentiate between certain sounds (such as "p" and "b"), or they may see the letters spaced incorrectly, like this: Thew ord sare notsp aced cor rect ly Thewordsareallpushedtogether The thinks in pictures and wants to make a shape out of everything they see. This was useful in the case of Walt Disney who was dyslexic and could use these pictures to draw his world for us. People with dyslexia may be able to hear and see perfectly well, but what they hear and see looks different and sounds different than it would to most people. Approximately five to ten percent of school-age children have some type of learning disability.

    What is dyslexia?
    What causes dyslexia?
The exact causes of dyslexia are still not completely clear, but anatomical and brain imagery studies show differences in the way the brain of a dyslexic person develops and functions. Moreover, most people with dyslexia have been found to have problems with identifying the separate speech sounds within a word and/or learning how letters represent those sounds, a key factor in their reading difficulties. Dyslexia is not due to either lack of intelligence or desire to learn; with appropriate teaching methods, dyslexics can learn successfully.
    How widespread is dyslexia?
Dyslexia occurs in people of all backgrounds and intellectual levels. People who are very bright can be dyslexic. They are often capable or even gifted in areas that do not require strong language skills, such as art, computer science, design, drama, electronics, math, mechanics, music, physics, sales, and sports. In addition, dyslexia runs in families; dyslexic parents are very likely to have children who are dyslexic. Some people are identified as dyslexic early in their lives, but for others, their dyslexia goes unidentified until they get older.
