Welcome to the Dyslexia Homepage
Welcome to the Dyslexia Homepage. Dyslexia is a disorder that affects millions of people all over the world. It is one type of specific learning disability (SLD) that affects reading. SLDs can affect people as verbal and nonverbal deficits in all cultures, as seen in current SLD research on Japanese symbols. Although people can learn to compensate for their SLD, it is a permanent disorder that affects the way a person understands, processes, "takes in," retains, recalls, and/or expresses information. SLDs affect esteem, education, vocation, socialization, and daily life through problems in listening, reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, problem solving, organization, and time management through verbal and nonverbal perceptions. A person with a SLD learns at their own level and pace, while excelling in at least one area. Frequently, they will be inconsistent in their daily tasks and abilities, such as spelling a word one day and not the next day. Some of their experiences are difficulties with concentration, perception, memory, verbal skills (oral and/or textual), abstract reasoning, hand-eye coordination, social adjustment, low grades, underachievement, and expression. Often, people with SLDs have been considered lazy, rebellious, class clowns, unmotivated, misfits, or of low intelligence. These misconceptions, without understanding the SLD's effect on the person's life, lead to rejection, isolation, feelings of inferiority, discouragement, and low self-esteem.

How to get assessment for 10-year-old?
Jan 2010 I've recently begun to suspect that our brilliant 10 year old son may have at least a mild form of dyslexia. It's been easy to miss because he's been otherwise at such a high level in most areas but there are some consistent difficulties with spelling and new word attack that he's been having since 1st grade (and difficulty solving problems involving pattern-matching in preschool) and now I'm suspecting more is going on. He's currently in a private school without dyslexia assessment, so I'm wondering where I can go to have him assessed? We live in Oakland - will the OUSD assess him? Does insurance usually cover this type of assessment? Parents with mildly dyslexic children, does his difficulty profile sound familiar to you? Jessica Lipkind is an excellent person from whom to get this assessment. She is careful, pays attention to detail, and is also conscious of avoiding needless expense. We had our son assessed by an older woman for a huge sum of money a few years ago. I wish I had known Jessica then, as we would have gotten a much better assessment for a fraction of the price. Jessica is young and gets on really well with kids, and has the empathy to relate well to parents. email: drjlipkind@gmail.com anon

It offers a friendly, confidential and affordable service to adults and young people aged 16 years and over. Some of my clients have already been assessed as dyslexic and now require an update, perhaps before starting university or college; others are exploring the possibility of dyslexia for the first time. I appreciate that people may feel very anxious when they first make contact. The idea of an assessment can seem daunting. Most people, however, find the experience interesting and enjoyable. More importantly, the knowledge they gain from the assessment helps them to make sense of past difficulties and move forward with renewed confidence and understanding. Dyslexia is a neurological-based, specific learning disability, characterized by language handling deficiencies, impairment in the ability to recognize and translate words into sentences. It is said that a reading disability reflects a continuous deficit as opposed to an arrest in development and can occur in a person of any level of intelligence. Dyslexia can be related to hormonal or hereditary influences, or brain injury. One in five children are thought to have dyslexia and it is found to be more prevalent in males. The difficulties caused by dyslexia do not accurately measure the sufferer's intelligence. Geniuses of our time, such as Einstein, have been affected by the problems of automatic decoding of words and formation of accurate sentences. It is said that many dyslexics "shine in the arts, creativity, design, computing and lateral thinking." The etiological basis suggests that reading disorders stem from difficulties in phonological processing, i.e. the brain's inability to translate images from the eyes completely and correctly to the ears and mouth. Symptoms of dyslexia range from reading and writing difficulties, to speech, direction, time, concentration, coordination, and even self-esteem issues. Other mental disorders are often found to be co-morbid, yet still separate from dyslexia. Common are disorders such as attention deficit and depression, enhanced by the general feelings of helplessness and confusion of dyslexia..

Introduction to RfS What is Dyslexia? Who Has It? ... Bibliography In a nutshell:
Very poor reading and spelling in a bright person with nothing else wrong. In official detail:
Dyslexia is a severe reading problem of neurological origin in a person with average or above average intelligence, for whom there are no other physical, medical, or psychological conditions sufficiently serious to account for the language handling deficits. In a nutshell:
Anybody can have it, and, yes, it often runs in families. In detail:
Conservative estimates vary between 5 and 10 per cent of the population. No correlation has been found between the incidence of dyslexia and nationality, income, ethnicity, race, or IQ, and experts are even beginning to question whether it is more common among boys than girls. It has a genetic component Web site created and maintained by The Design Dept

My name is Mira Halpert . I have a Masters in Education. Two of my four children had Dyslexia a Learning Disability and ADHD My daughter struggled with Dyslexia , a Learning Disability and ADHD for years. Not until 8th grade did I realize she had Dyslexia and was a right-brained learner . That is, she learned best when she saw and experienced information. I then developed what has become the 3D Learner Program (R) that helped my daughter to improve her reading comprehension 4.2 grade levels in seven months. I now realize that over 60% of the students today and most students with Dyslexia are right-brained learners What's worse, is that right-brained learners often struggle for years, even when they come from the best families. What often happens is: - Reading comprehension goes from slightly behind, to a year or two behind, to 3 to 5 years behind by high school

Frequently Asked Questions About Dyslexia What is dyslexia?
What causes dyslexia?
The exact causes of dyslexia are still not completely clear, but anatomical and brain imagery studies show differences in the way the brain of a dyslexic person develops and functions. Moreover, most people with dyslexia have been found to have problems with identifying the separate speech sounds within a word and/or learning how letters represent those sounds, a key factor in their reading difficulties. Dyslexia is not due to either lack of intelligence or desire to learn; with appropriate teaching methods, dyslexics can learn successfully. What are the effects of dyslexia?
The impact that dyslexia has is different for each person and depends on the severity of the condition and the effectiveness of instruction or remediation. The core difficulty is with word recognition and reading fluency, spelling, and writing. Some dyslexics manage to learn early reading and spelling tasks, especially with excellent instruction, but later experience their most debilitating problems when more complex language skills are required, such as grammar, understanding textbook material, and writing essays. People with dyslexia can also have problems with spoken language, even after they have been exposed to good language models in their homes and good language instruction in school. They may find it difficult to express themselves clearly, or to fully comprehend what others mean when they speak. Such language problems are often difficult to recognize, but they can lead to major problems in school, in the workplace, and in relating to other people. The effects of dyslexia reach well beyond the classroom.
