zSB(3,3) What Is Dyslexia? Depending on the educational jurisdiction, the term Dyslexia may or may not be used to define a disability in reading. Some educational jurisdictions refer to Dyslexia as a type of learning disability pertaining to reading. However, Dyslexia is often described as a reading disorder or a disability affecting reading or the impairment of the ability to read. Typically, those with Dyslexia have a normal intelligence. The prevalence of Dyslexia has been estimated to occur in between 5-10% of the population. Dyslexia symptoms can range from mild to severe. Categories Affected by Dyslexia Reading
Dyslexics will often confuse letters (b for d, p for b etc.) and say words backwards (tac for cat) and will often omit simple words in sentences. Word and letter reversals are common as are the omissions of small words and parts of words. Their ability to see the sequence in words or sentences is somewhat scrambled. Their visual and phonetic memory is extremely weak which causes the deficits in reading.

I think Kelly was just completely emotionally drained. I actually thought she was being a good mom, though, by not getting all weepy and overly emotional with her daughter. It would just have upset the little girl more, and I liked that she suggested they pick out a photograph that Disa could take with her to Vermont.
And I love how she said she was "in advertising". I didn't see much work going on at all. And I think it is one of those "free" newspapers that gets delivered with our regular mail. Anyone?

    The Controversy Continues
There has always been a question as to whether dyslexia is real and whether it qualifies a student for special education and related services. The answer to the question of whether a diagnosis of dyslexia qualifies a student for special education services is no. But, dyslexia is often the underlying reason for a student to meet the eligibility criteria of Learning Disabilities.
Is it important to diagnose dyslexia? The answer to this is YES - ABSOLUTELY! If Individual Education Plan (IEP) teams are to develop an IEP for a student who qualifies for services based on a discrepancy between reading and intelligence - it is important to rule in or out whether the student's inadequate reading achievement issue is related to a form of dyslexia. How can an IEP team develop an appropriate educational plan if they have not identified the root of the reading problem? How can they develop strategies if they don't know why the student is not learning to read?
This is analogous to a physician treating and trying to cure an appendicitis attack by recommending a healthy diet. A physician would be strung up by her toes if she approached her practice of medicine with this sort of "off the cuff" methodology. This - try it and see approach - could result in death. Not a good approach. It seems many IEP teams though may use the same approach. They take a try it and see posture and what happens is the critical learning time, related to brain development, is lost and students get further and further behind because of inadequate diagnosis and instruction, not intelligence.

If you find the information on this site useful, please take a few minutes to fill in my visitor form at the top of this page, or drop me a quick e-mail with your comments to admin@dyslexichelp.co.uk There are some very USEFUL BOOKS to help you understand Dyslexia and to help your child. And some thoughts from children on how it feels to be dyslexic - "Plees help" This site came about when I found out that my son, Callum was diagnosed as a dyslexic (at the age of 6) and I researched across the internet to find out and understand as much as I could in order to help him. His father is also dyslexic but as a child was labeled stupid and disruptive and had an unhappy time at school. We can only hope that now there is more awareness about Dyslexia, children diagnosed with it will have a better time at school with the support of parents and teachers who are now more geared up to support it within mainstream schools. They estimate that 1 in 10 children have Dyslexic tendencies which is about 2-3 children per average class. The Government's latest Code of Practice is pushing schools more and more into supporting children with special needs and to include them rather than exclude them.

*ONE-DAY MATH for Dyslexic or Learning Disabled Children, Teens and Adults*
Color-Coded Cards, Clear Print, Simple Pictures, Audio Instruction and Hands-On Activities help you learn by listening and doing.
Learning differences come in many forms. Some people have good visual perception, but have trouble with mental math. Some people need hands-on activities to understand a concept that is usually taught with only pencil and paper, or a calculator. Some people need someone to tell them when to do the next step, or when to take a break. Don't let learning differences keep you from contributing your talents to the world! As an experienced teacher and tutor, Eve Sutton has designed ONE-DAY MATH with special attention to the needs of every kind of learner. You will hear cues like, "Now it's time to take a break," or "Pause while you gather the supplies for the next lesson. Come back when you are ready to continue." Very little writing is used on the Lesson Cards, only what you really need to know. The Lesson Cards have space in the margins and between lines to help you focus on the words, and to allow space for you to write your notes. The words are clearly printed, with no distractions. All the materials can be organized and stored in the 3-pocket carrier, or you can put everything into a 3-ring binder. Staying organized is part of the ONE-DAY MATH philosophy: Stay calm. Work neatly. Answer the right question.
