Posted: 10/29/10 Summary: New research could link the 'Snowball Earth' glacial events some 750 to 580 million years ago to the rise of early animals. The research team tracked phosphorus concentrations in the oceans through history. Phosphorus is linked to the abundance of life in the oceans, and concentrations appear to have spiked at a time corresponding to the Snowball Earth event.
An example of a drill core of the chemical sediments called iron formations that the UCR-based team used to track marine phosphorus concentrations. The core is from the approximately 2.2 billion-year-old Hotazel Formation from South Africa. Photo credit: Lyons lab, UC Riverside A team of scientists, led by biogeochemists at the University of California, Riverside, has found new evidence linking "Snowball Earth" glacial events to the rise of early animals
The controversial Snowball Earth hypothesis posits that the Earth was covered from pole to pole by a thick sheet of ice lasting, on several occasions, for millions of years. These glaciations, the most severe in Earth history, occurred from 750 to 580 million years ago. The researchers argue that the oceans in the aftermath of these events were rich in phosphorus, a nutrient that controls the abundance of life in the oceans.

Earth Day History
Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. For several years, it had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country. Finally, in November 1962, an idea occurred to me that was, I thought, a virtual cinch to put the environment into the political "limelight" once and for all. The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour. I flew to Washington to discuss the proposal with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who liked the idea. So did the President. The President began his five-day, eleven-state conservation tour in September 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day.
I continued to speak on environmental issues to a variety of audiences in some twenty-five states. All across the country, evidence of environmental degradation was appearing everywhere, and everyone noticed except the political establishment. The environmental issue simply was not to be found on the nation's political agenda. The people were concerned, but the politicians were not.

Earth Day
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Ron Cobb 's 1969 Ecology Symbol Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth 's natural environment . Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes , who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. April 22 corresponds to spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere . Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week , an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. World Environment Day , celebrated on June 5 in a different nation every year, remains the principal United Nations environmental observance.
