Earth Science Activities – Hands on learning activities for kids
Interesting earth science activities will definitely enhance a child learning about earth science even though a child can read up about caves, fossils, volcanoes and earth.
Excursion as an earth science activity - Visit to Caves In their general reading, my kids came across topics about caves. They were fascinated how caves were form and the beautiful pictures in the book showing what a cave is like. I decided that a visit to a real cave would be a most valuable lesson to them. Therefore, off we went one day and head towards a cave (Gua Tempurung) in Perak, Malaysia. What we saw in the cave - crystal, stalactites and stalagmites.
We learnt that it takes about 100 years for stalactites to grow 1 centimeter! We saw crystal forming on a big rock in the cave. Nothing beats this valuable experience of a visit to the cave when come to learning about caves. Personally, I prefer to show my children the real stuff after they read from books. However, depending on accessibility and resources availability, I may not be able to show them all. That’s when hands-on earth science activities begin to develop at home.

  • earth image by Orlando Florin Rosu from Fotolia.com NASA encourages educators to start teaching earth science at young ages. Earth science is the study of the Earth and all its components. Oceanography, meteorology, astronomy and geology are all elements of earth science. Preschoolers learn best by discovery. Earth science allows them to play and explore while learning about the planet.
  • Oceanography
  • Show a large bucket of water to the children. Try to float a raw egg on top of the water and watch it sink. Allow children to discuss what they know about the ocean. Pour large amounts of salt into the bucket. Let the children feel the difference with their hands and smell the water. Place the egg back on the water and see that it now floats. Show the children a collection of seashells. Allow them to feel the differences in texture and discuss how shells end up on beaches.

    Objectives:

    Students will:
    - analyze satellite imagery of Central Florida
    - compare and contrast geologic differences over a twenty year period
    - assess the role of water's impact on the local geologic features Materials: Background:
What does water quality have to do with rocks and the development of Central Florida? More than the average person might think. This activity will guide students to the understanding that there is a significant link between water quality and the geologic features of Florida.
Chemical sedimentary rocks form when minerals are precipitated from a solution or are left behind when a solution evaporates. Deposits of minerals that precipitate out of solution, or remain after evaporation, form rocks. Calcium carbonate is a compound that is carried in solution in ocean water. When the calcium carbonate precipitates out of solution as calcite, many crystals grow together and form the chemical sedimentary rock known as limestone. Limestone may also contain other minerals and sediments, but it is comprised of at least 50 percent calcite. Limestone is usually deposited on sea or ocean floors. Large areas of the United States, including Florida, are underlain by limestone because oceans once covered much of the country for millions of years.

Fun Earth Science Activities for Teens
By an eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? Earth Science is a subject that teens study between seventh and tenth grades. It is the study of the earth and what is on itincluding rocks, the makeup of the ground, the air and water, and the minerals. Sometimes, a general class in Earth Science will touch on things like plant and animal life, although those subjects are generally taught separately. Earth Science activities for teens can help heighten interest, delve into important subjects and clarify instructions.
    Rock Classification
  • Classifying rocks is an important step in Earth Science. Send teens outside to collect several types of rocks. Stress that they should get the rocks from different placeswoodsy areas, parking lots, creek beds and flat fields. Then, bring the rocks back to the classroom. Students can use their textbooks, Internet sites and posters around the room to classify the rocks into their correct categories. To incorporate technology, have students take digital photos of the rocks, label the photos and insert them into a slid show about the various types of rocks they are studying.

    How to do it
Note: if you are looking for science fair or science project areas, this set of Web pages may help you with ideas for techniques you might use: read with a prepared mind! Alternatively, look at the projects collection which is part of this series. Salty sand or sandy salt?
You will need some samples of sand, taken from different parts of a surf beach: near the water's edge, right up to the very back of the beach. Collect the sand when there has been no rain for a week or two, so that salt spray has had a chance to "salt" the upper levels. Use standard coffee jars or something else, so that you get the same quantity of sand. You will also need access to a fairly sensitive balance how you find your way to one of these is up to you. If you cannot get a balance, you will need to modify this, and make eyeball estimates of the salt from each sample. Dry and weigh your samples of sand, then wash and filter the sand carefully to dissolve out any salt, dry the sand again, and weigh it to find out how much salt you have washed out. As a check, crystallise the salt and weigh it.
